Smoking, for the first time, C & D Three Friars in a cob. Arrived in a tobacco delivery today. I'm enjoying it. Jarred up some bulks. Everything but an ounce of the Friars went into the cellar.

Yeah, Tom's contrast stains look great. Here's my other really good birdseye from Tom. 2015 SH Select Mixture in my Tom Eltang blasted bent Danish Dublin. Another beauty! H&H Anni Kake in a Kaywoodie Flame Grain Dublin. A&W root beer back. You've got some real gems, John!

Sitting on the fence with Haunted Bookshop. Based on your posts, it seems to be a favourite of yours and I’m hoping to gain some insight and your honest opinion: Is it earthy and nutty like some claim? Being a cigar smoker, when I hear the term “earthy” that tells me it’s more “barnyard” and “hay” tones. Neither appeals to me cigar wise and I suspect the same in my pipe tobacco. Due to the heavy dose of perique in this blend, I’m also told to smoke it on a full stomach and that it’s not an everyday smoke. I’d appreciate your thoughts, and anyone else who’s had this blend. Thank you! I'm not very good at describing flavors, but here's what I get: Very burley-forward, bready, nutty, some slight fruit (plummy?), underlying sweetness and spice. Maybe a little hay, mostly early. Spiciness builds and is very noticeable when you get halfway into a bowl. I don't get anything in the way of any flavoring or topping, except that underlying sweetness.
I usually start the day with this blend with coffee. I usually don't eat anything beforehand, no issues.
I prefer to smoke HB in a cob.
Hope this was helpful.
It is, and thanks for your opinion! It is now in my wish list. Perhaps if anyone else had tried this blend could chime in too?

A marvelous 72 degrees on this Feb. 3rd. Not normal for my neck of the wood. Smoking SG FVF in a Radice Rind Billiard, C&D Pegasus in a Savinelli Bing’s Favorite, Sutliff Match Flying Dutchman in a Nording Freehand Signature. Great minds think alike Kelly. Had a bowl of FVF on the golf course earlier today. Bengal Spice tea on the side. 😁🏌️♂️

This afternoon, while working, I smoked Haunted Bookshop and Pegasus, in a couple of cobs. Now enjoying a bowl of McConnell Scottish Cake in a Savinelli Porto Cervo bent Dublin with a Labatt's Blue. Time to unwind, reset and count my blessings. Sitting on the fence with Haunted Bookshop. Based on your posts, it seems to be a favourite of yours and I’m hoping to gain some insight and your honest opinion: Is it earthy and nutty like some claim? Thank you! I had some doubts when I opened the tin, because it reminded me of loose cigarette tobacco. It's definitely not reminiscent of barnyard or hay. It could be described as kind of earthy, but I'm thinking more new leather with a hint of cherry. It really is a good, fairly mild smoke and I can easily understand how Silver smokes this stuff all day. I'm planning on getting a pound of it.

You've got some real gems, John! Thanks! I’ve been doubly lucky in having been in the right place at the right time in my career as well as having hunted up some good finds and good deals on really good pipes.

C&D Crooked Lane in my early 1940s small Barling Billiard. It took me quite a while to hunt up a smaller pre-transition Barling. I don’t think they come much smaller as this is group 1 sized.

Maybe my plummy is your cherry, definitely getting some fruit in the background. I'll be smoking it again tomorrow, I'll see if I can find leather in there. I don't usually analyze my pipe tobacco too much. I smoked four bowls in 3 different pipes this morning to come up with something.

After a couple (maybe 3) bowls of C & D Three Friars, it's safe to say that I'll be getting more to enjoy and squirrel away. Same neighborhood as Haunted Bookshop @professor Stigdon. Now, I'm smoking a MM Apple Diplomat filled with the Match Victorian that I had dried for earlier, but was distracted by the Three Friars.

Please tell me about that Scottish Cake For me, it's a pretty rich smoke that I usually have in the evening. A bit of fruit (plum?) and spice, but not too spicy. not sugary, but there is a creamy, sweetness. Maybe the Kentucky in there gives it a deeper flavor. Not a daily blend for me, more as a treat 2-3 times a week. I'm actually smoking a bowl of it right now and am trying to pick out some flavors, but I haven't got the palate to pick out all the nuances. For me it's either like/no like. This one's a like, and am trying to put a bit away for aging and when availability becomes difficult.

I spent the morning with a really fine bowl of Squadron Leader in a Kaywoodie lovat, along with two cups of coffee and a youtube video I think you'll enjoy..."bow making with Ed Scott" will keep you in your seat long enough to have a pipe , and Ed is a pipe smoker too, and he makes me want to kick myself in the butt for all the time I waste farting around in my shop!
