In my town there is a regular Walmart and one that only sells groceries..They both just eliminated their cashiers..Self check out only..The machines don't except cash..If you don't have plastic you can't buy anything..I'm just happy that there's a lot of other places in town for me to shop..Places that show a little respect for folks who don't want to be made feel like sheep being herded.

And the beat goes on. And on. Will get worse as long as we have 7.8 billion people on this planet, and counting. There is no problem that we are facing that is not population-related. It’s the elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about.

There are a few places that still take cash, Puff. I hate those cursed self checkout thingies. They usually have an employee standing there doing nothing anyway.
I have been seeing the elephant for a long time. Did my part, zero offspring.

I do not enjoy self check out. I want a checker and a bagger. In the town of Toad, the Checkers at Smith's (KRoeger) are practically friends I have known for over 20 years. So we chat a little. It is a nice experience. I do not want to fight with their friggin' computer and scanners.

They rather replace there employees with machines that don't have to be paid, no benefits, breaks, holiday pay, vacations, etc., etc. It's greed that runs this country and always has........it's just gotten big enough for a lot more to see if they only open their eyes and quit saying it doesn't evolve me. End of Rant!

The pressure of numbers. More shoppers, more need for clerks. OR— machines to take their place. I admit that this situation is not as "serious" as so many others, but I do contend that is a part of the total equation.

When I was a young man I remember checkers AND baggers being at ALL the registers. No, not as many registers as they are today but, at least 6, and they all had someone attending them. Nowadays there's what, maybe 10 registers and if your real lucky 3 are attended. Still can't agree with ya on the population really having that much to do with what we all must contend with going to ANY store nowadays. Many stores have cut out Baggers all together, for what? To save a stinking buck and get some back by forcing the checker to do the bagging. The American way, GREED! period.

And yet our local Safeway and Albertsons store run in-store announcements looking for new employees. I admit I'm confused.

I purposely avoid the self checkout at stores that have them. If our Albertson's went the way of self checkout, I would tell the manager that it is time for me to move on, we have some great cashiers.

Our nearest, (15 miles) Walmart is well staffed and we rarely have to wait. The town has signs that say "Welcome to Atlanta Texas, One City Under God". Our local grocery store has the same too checkers all the time, plus a high school boy that fills in if they get busy.

Unfortunately, they didn't last in a notoriously tough grocery market.

The whole situation is a catch 22.
I'm often amused by the contradictions I read here. On one hand, people will complain about the automation of self-checkout and the negative impact it has on the amazing cashiers they care so much about... but they will also be the first to argue against a minimum wage hike to keep those workers interested in jobs like that "because it hurts small business".
Capitalism is a system of contradictions though. People will argue that they want less regulation and government interference, but then the mega-corporations get away with treating their workers like garbage, and getting tax breaks that the average American could only dream of. The opposite of capitalism is equally as scary. The reality is that a middle ground is best, but we have done a shite job of finding it. If we had, the majority of the world's wealth wouldn't rest with a minuscule amount of people.

Our local Lowe's has both. People cashiers and auto cashiers. I'll use the auto if I have a small number of items and don't want to wait in line. For the same reason I use automated teller and drive through cash machine at the bank. Sometimes it's actually easier for the customer.

!975-1978 I worked bagging groceries at McConnell AFB Commissary in Wichita Kansas through my high school years on Saturdays. We received no wage, it was tips only, and the active duty and veteran shoppers knew that was the case. The cashiers were civil servants I believe.
On a good day, I could make $80.00 cash which was better than what I could make with my limited skill set at that point in time at a job off base, but I knew that Customer service was supreme, and eggs did not get broken, no bread smashed, and groceries were segregated according to the temps that they were sold at, customer was treated like a king.
That was free market at work, and at least at that point in time it worked well. The consumer directly paid the worker on merit...it cut out the middleman, and shopper and employee were happy with the arrangement.

There are people "working" in the cities that it would be worth paying them to stay home. A lot of people aren't worth minimum wage. Almost every person who starts at minimum wage is increased to a living wage as soon as they prove their worth. I know that people who work for McDonald's in the Houston area are making closer to $20 an hour after 18 months. If they raise the minimum wage to $15, a lot of people will never get a chance. The one exception that I know of is child and adult daycare. My wife is a consultant for these business. They are all subsidized through the USDA food program and the pay is so low that there is literally no money to pay $15. The government audits the heck out of these businesses. Some owners only take a draw a couple of times a year and live off of their spouses income. Without the subsidy the parents can't afford daycare at all. Same for the old folks. The workers are still making minimum wage after decades of service. They are the invisible unsung heros.

I started at 73 cents an hour. In 6 weeks I was raised to 1.25 and given a union apprenticeship. By 1975 I make $35k. If they had to start me at even 7 bucks I would not have got the chance.
