Irregardless, at this point, I'm going to start getting serious about my cellar. I've neglected it for too long

I wonder how many aromatic smokers would actually begin to explore and switch to English blends and non aromatic tobaccos rather than just quit smoking altogether. Yes ... my original question. 🙂

I wonder how many aromatic smokers would actually begin to explore and switch to English blends and non aromatic tobaccos rather than just quit smoking altogether. I'm relatively new to pipe smoking. Love my aromatics, but starting to like others with latakia (but have to smoke them outside). But I just spent a year finding a "go to" blend for all the different flavors. Lane Vanilla Black Cavendish was great, the best vanilla I've found - BY FAR. I have 3 or 4 or 5 other vanillas I like, but none compare to Lane's. So now I'm looking at Sutliff Black Vanilla and Sutliff Black Vanilla Cavendish. And my first homemade mixture/melange uses Lane's Vanilla Black Cav. It's so good and smooth, I may use up most the of the Lane Vanilla I have left to make more of it! So, I guess I'd try to stick with pipe smoking. Once the aromatics run out, I'm sure I'd find something else, but probably wouldn't smoke as much. I guess that's what the tyrants want - isn't it?

It appears that you can find Lane Vanilla Black Cavendish at cupojoes and tobacco pipes.
Both sites allow you to put it in a cart or put it on a wish list... not sure what the wish list is for.

I wonder how many aromatic smokers would actually begin to explore and switch to English blends and non aromatic tobaccos rather than just quit smoking altogether. Many aromatic smokers started as English and Burley smokers. Once technique was learned, the full flavor of aromatics is experienced. I smoked English blends nearly exclusively for my first decade of smoking because of their user friendly ease but overnight they all started tasting exactly the same regardless of the blend. Virginias and their burley, Perique, Oriental blends and aromatics are what I gravitate toward now. The only latakia blends I smoke now have the latakia only in condiment amounts and far in the background so I can still taste the rest of the tobaccos in the blend. Those that start with aromatics are often put off because they can taste nothing but hot air and often give up the pipe. Aros are far more suitable further down the road than at the beginning. If the legislation pecks hard enough, latakia is just as artificially flavored as an aromatic so those may be in jeopardy as well.

You can make your own aromatics, with some time and experimentation. But they can have my Buccaneer when they pry it out of my cold, dead fingers!!!

This is a topic we all are aware of. somebody wants other folk to live life the way they prefer instead of letting folks choose for themselves. Unfortunately there are few sent to govern that are wise and skiled enough to do so. It is our fault in the end, we could have gathered a massive group of tobbaco enthusiasts and partnered with the industry to prevent such problems but we stayed in our small groups apprehensive of the future. we still can make an impact if we try.. The issue is these poorly suited individuals are looking for ways to pressure industries for money and garner increased power. look at Hawley from Mo. who went after the gaming industry over loot boxes.. my guess is got his payoff as his rhetoric subsided on the matter. This is a common model the grifters allowed in .gov use. Tobacco has always been a whipping boy for those types yet the enthusiasts march on. Now the powers that be are beginning to really mess things up and we may see further erosion of our hobby. We know what to do, how to do it, and why we are doing it so the only question is will we maintain ourselves as participants against a failed policy or will we do as most have and go underground with illegal blackmarket suppliers.. you know prohibition does not work to stop activities only puts legal suppliers out of business. The menthol issue is funny as it appears they really are tone deaf to their own racist ideas. one bright spot is our current .gov may have already fallen and we are just hearing the chattering of a few who have yet to understand they lost consent of the governed and face an impossible task of controlling folk who no longer will allow the failures to go unchallenged any longer. I see it as a similar issue as weed. nobody in .gov would allow it yet a brave group decided they would no longer listen to official lies nor be pushed around by idiots. fast forward a few years and nobody is talking weed prohibition anymore. So now they go after "easy" targets in the tobbaco enthusiast crowd unaware of exactly how many folks do not care about their failed ideas and attempts to control us. I for one will seek the blackmarket if a prohibition is ever created on pipe tobacco if only to add my voice in dissent. millions against what? 1-200 politicians?. now who should cower in fear of becoming a criminal? us or those who are actually acting in a criminal manner.? luckily, I dont see our .gov surviving in its current state much longer as they have ruined america and continue to do so. Give me Liberty or give me death. (yes a bit dramatic but I for one will not be pushed around by such criminals in .gov)

Voter apathy, and massive stupidity has put us where we are at with the political leaders that we have in power. The longer they are there, the more corrupt they become and are beholden to special interests.

If only they would worry about targeting things like, I don't know, violence and human trafficking, instead of worrying about what law abiding citizens choose to smoke....

Honestly, I think most people would happily pay more taxes if it meant the development of a task force dedicated to the eradication of human trafficking.

Happy to have a decent cellar to chose from...don't have to worry about rules and regulations. If you buy now you won't have to worry about smoking later.

I get it, Paddy but it happens on both sides of the political aisle here, my comment was a generalization of where we are at. We have knuckleheads in both of the major parties. Nevertheless, your point is well taken.

Don't disagree, but I think we all need to be a bit more aware of allowing politics to bleed into our conversations here.
I have been seeing more and more political spitballs fired into threads of late. They may be random comments, but it's like the whack-a-mole popping up in the hope someone will grab the mallet and swing.

my "bout" with aros ended back around '64 when a true tobacconist in Rochester led me to original 965 out of a jar. Each to their own but happy to be a lata-holic for around 15yrs.
There...back on topic!

Ed Duncan, Batavia, NY What was sad for me is that I popped into a Tinderbox and was instantly smitten by the aroma, and with no guidance I picked out Stokkebye Nougat (Tinderbox called it North Sea) It smells heavenly and is a great blend, but I sure wish that store would have been more about educating the consumer and engaging their clientele. Back in the day, Tinderbox was the big daddy of tobacco stores, if across the board they focused on training the staff properly we might have a more robust pipe smoking community, and they might still dominate the market.

So true. When I was first getting started, I wandered into a Tinderbox. They sold me a few ounces of relabeled 1Q and told me I would love it. I didn't. After joining a forum a few months later, I went back in there with more knowledge than the staff. The community is an invaluable resource. Every tobacco store should employ at least one actual pipe smoker.

We're a traditional pipe shop and lounge but 90% or more of our customers are buying cigars. I really enjoy working with our pipe customers but I really had to work on my knowledge of our cigar inventory.

All perfect reasons to 'cellar' and cellar deep. He who dies with copious amounts of tobacco still on hand wins.

I wanted to visit the Sacramento shop a while back when I was there for work, but it's reported as permanently closed. Are there others, and/or unrelated Briar Patch shops? I'm always glad to add a shop to the "try to visit" list!

I bought some really nice estate Castello’s and Dunhill’s from them and I got some great point of sale ephemera from them over the years too! They had one thing in common with the early years of my Briar Patch in southwestern Wisconsin they both had a mother/daughter running the business.
