After great trial and tribulation, your efforts and studies have brought you to the great obelisk. Within this massive stone tower lies a room with a single door, upon entering you are greeted with such fresh air that you are shocked at where it could possibly be coming from. The room is lit comfortably by a series of sconces with thick beeswax candles. The walls lined high with tobaccos of every type of origin, some not even of this world.
At the center of the room sits two comfortable low wingback chairs made of an unidentifiable yet comfortable leather, between them a table with two glasses and a decanter, and to each chair a side table containing an ashtray and pipe rest. This is no ordinary sitting room though, not just due to its location, but due to its great power.
You pull the dusty tome from your bag and recant the incantation you’ve read over and over, so much so it is practically embedded within your dreams. As you finish the last word the room dimly glows and you are given its greatest gift, you may sit, smoke, and converse with any figure. Future, Past, Present or even otherworldly.
A voice deep within the obelisk responds to your incantation in a low, deep voice. “Great magician, whom is it you call to sit and smoke with you this evening?”

So many! But if I had to choose one, I think it would be William Shakespeare. If he's not available (due to rehearsals no doubt) perhaps Marcus Aurelius. Or maybe...

Mine would be either Tolkein or Einstein. I imagine either would be a great conversationalist, and perhaps even a chess match!

Limiting myself to pipe smokers, it would have to be Albert Einstein. Of course, Aleister Crowley was a pipe smoker. Hmmmm......,

Marcus would not be a smoker, obviously. But a great candidate for conversion!

My mother's father. But not today, forty years ago. My current self and the pipe smoker I once knew. He's 91 this year. He and my grandmother were bastions of hope in trying times. They were a guiding light when all else was darker than the heat death of the universe. I can remember endless days and nights with him in his garage/workshop working on wood projects of all shapes and sizes while he would patiently puff away on his pipe. Last summer he came to visit me for a week and I sat with him and listened to his repeated tales of the Korean war, how he shot that piss of shite dog that came in his yard when he was 12, and how the front of my yard had changed so much since his last visit. I could have had that smoke but it would not have been the same and his ailing health was definitively the deciding factor.
Sean Connery- That would be phantasmagorical. I can only imagine the stories that man could tell.

My grand dad first comes to mind. I wouldn’t be the man that I am if it wasn’t for him. Sherlock Holmes if I could resurrect fictional characters. Third choice: Winston Churchill, with a couple of Dunhill Diadema’s and scotch.

You guys. No stone tower, just a neighborhood tobacco shop on a Saturday afternoon in 1986.

It would be interesting to see his pipe collection and tobacco cellar. Might need more than a day for that.

He would need a week to get all of his tobacco out to show you, and he probably wouldn't do it. He does have a lot of great pipes though. We were close friends for several years, not sure about now.

I love the way you introduced the question, Hand of Glory ...I would have simply asked, 'who'd you like to have a pipe with?' (yes, ending the sentence with a preposition). I think Silver nailed it for me. Honestly, I'd love to spend an afternoon (or more) with many of my friends in this place right here. I can't pick just one and I can't start to name people, but that would be perfect for me.

Charles Bukowski. Marie Curie. Ken Kesey. Randall Flagg. James Herriot.
Closet pipers, all.

I’m always trying to improve my writing, positing questions with a magical hook is a fun way to work on the craft. As long as people enjoy it, I will continue to ask questions in this manner.

Charles Bukowski. Marie Curie. Ken Kesey. Randall Flagg. James Herriot. Closet pipers, all. I have a deep love for Bukowski. But you couldn’t pay me to smoke a pipe of his. He was known for never washing out his coffee cups or wine glasses. Often caked thickly with either wine, or old coffee. Sometimes both im sure. I would be very surprised if his pipe wasn’t a charred mess and filled with the driest and cheapest of drugstore tobacco.

A generalization, probably egregious, but if you wanted to find the slobs on any campus head over to the philosophy department.

I could share some Half & Half with Gerald Ford. I'm sure he'd have a story or two.

General Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller, Marine extraordinaire or General George S. Patton. Either would be interesting and entertaining.

You wouldn't think it, but Jerry Lee Lewis was a pipe smoker at one time...a wild and crazy guy, but a pipe smoker, and collector too I think.
