Yes, acetaminophen is basically useless in recent trials. Now hospitals are pushing IV Tylenol, which is shown to be roughly as effective as when given by mouth, that is, not at all. Of course, it's far greater in cost to the patient. Sorry the TENS is giving you diminishing returns. They wanted to implant a battery pack in my belly connecting to electrodes in 8 or 10 or 12 spots next to my spinal cord. Having had no benefits with TENS, I said, no thank you. Tylenol also gives me no relief from anything except to irritate my ulcer.
I'm going to try and see a Chiropractor this week and see if they have any answers or remedies as a last ditch effort to stop this pain. Sadly if it continues I'll not be able to make pipes or even go the the grocery store. It seems anytime spent on my feet just increases the pain.

Hope you get some relief, Ron, pipes or no pipes. That's a tough way to live.

Amen, bro.
I have seen so many people racked with pain from back issues over the years, it breaks your heart to see it progress and become such a daily part of their lives.
Hang in there Ron.

Ron, if I understand correctly you are suffering from collapsed discs in the lower spine?
I have similar problems with L1 through L4.
A good Chiropractor can work miracles with pain relief. I have known two. One in San Francisco, CA and one in Taos NM.
The therapy worked something like this. I mention it as you might want to ask your man about it.
1. Prone on the table. 2. Hot packs to start the muscle relaxation and stop the spasms, if any. The muscles of the lower back are trying to do the job of your spine in holding you erect. 3. Some massage to enhance relaxation of the back muscles. 4. Then cometh the TENS electrodes. This does two things. One, interrupt pain signals and, two, turn your lower back muscles into jelly, so to speak. 5. Once the muscles have "released" their efforts, the Chiropractor can manipulate your vertebrae to separate and lengthen the spine releasing compression on the nerves. The movements are micro. You will not be longer and taller. He should work the whole spine to relieve compression. You should feel a whole lot better. It takes a good hour or so. 6. Once done, he removes the electrodes and leaves you on the table for like 15 or 20 minutes for the supporting muscles to return to their normal duties. Since you are still prone they have not started to support you and you should not be in pain. 7. Slow and easy rise from the table. Gentle and easy movement for the next few days. No strain.
this therapy sure helped me and I have not had to return for almost 18 years. A home TENS unit can really help with the pain if you have someone to help place the electrodes.
Best of luck and hope you feel better.

I forgot to add above, one potential benefit from step five. If the Chiro is able to "adjust" the vertebra, sometimes the spinal disc or part of it will return to its normal position of cushioning. This proves longer term relief rom pain.

Thank you all for your concern and suggestions. The tens unit worked for me one time and since then no relief. I ended up going to a pain specialist that is connected to a chiropractic clinic. Here's the bad news, they didn't really do anything but take a urine sample and made an appointment to see me in two weeks for an MRI and some other scan to replace the probe up the rear. The doctor I talked to wasn't convinced that the pain I was experiencing had anything to do with my back issues. After talking to the doctor I got the feeling they suspect bladder cancer. As of last night the meds aren't even working to kill the pain anymore. I'm not looking forward to what these next two weeks before I see the doc again bring to say the least. And as I look at the calendar its really three weeks away. A prayer or two I think might go a long way to help cause I don't think mine are doing any good. Thank you all again.

Hoping it turns out to be something less troublesome and easily treatable, Ron. I'll be keeping a good thought for you. Hang in there.
