It's coming up on time for me to restock the liquor cabinet (now that I know I can imbibe without aggravating the reflux). There are some standbys I'm low on and know I want to get and can get:
- Elijah Craig Small Batch
- Old Forester 1920
- Woodford Double Oaked
- Old Dominick Huling Station Single Barrel
There are a few I want to restock/try, but aren't available in my area right now:
Redbreast
Highland Park Viking
Wyoming Whiskey (the regular bourbon)
And there are a few I'm pretty sure I'd like to try, though I definitely won't be getting all of them:
- Old Forester 1910
- Four Roses Small Batch
- WhistlePig Rye (6-year)
- Barrell Spirits #28
- Barrell Spirits Dovetail
So, questions for the collective wisdom:
- Is there a close substitute for Redbreast and/or Highland Park?
- Does anybody have experience or thoughts on anything in the "Like to Try" list?
- Does anybody have something else to suggest that fits in this profile -- i.e., bourbon, Irish, or (distant third) non-peaty Scotch that's good for sipping neat or with just a splash of water?

Seriously, Old Forester 1910 & Four Roses Small Batch are pretty good for their price point. If you want to splurge, there's Jefferson's Ocean. Widow Jane ain't bad, for a "bourbon" from Brooklyn, NY. Jefferson Reserve (I forget which) is also good.

I have never heard of a substitute for Redbreast. I have never tasted it either. I never feel like spending the money. The best whiskey of any kind I have ever tasted is Jameson Gold Reserve, which was a gift.

You owe it to yourself to try WRITERS’ TEARS. Irish. Not that Bourbon swill.

I haven't tasted any of those. Guess I'm not a connoisseur. I stick to Woodford Reserve.

Old Parr neat! For cocktails, I go with Cutty Sark.

Normally, I wouldn’t look at a blended bourbon, but I discovered a small batch one that is incredibly good. Even my wife who doesn’t normally like bourbon likes it. It’s called Three Chord. I prefer their original which is just called Blended Bourbon Whiskey but they’ve since released a few others like rye, 12 year, etc. threechordbourbon.comThree Chord was started by Neil Giraldo who is Pat Benatar's lead guitarist and husband.

I've heard good things about Pappy Van Winkle. Especially the 23 year old. I believe that it costs about the same as a good pair of English speakers.

Kinda funny that Neil is known as Pat Benetar’s hisband… the guy is a smokin guitarist in his own right and he really lays down the licks. I must say that Pat is pretty hot in her own right in looks and as a performer. They are an admirable couple that has stood the test of time in a crazy world they operate in… and they still sound as good as ever.

I managed to find some Redbreast online, so that's covered. I also got some Green Spot and a bottle of Wyoming Whiskey bourbon, which people seem to like. Those will bump a couple of things from my "Like to Try" list.

Great thread.
Just got home from a neighborhood pub crawl. (we never made it to the pub)
I different couples hosted the lot of us going from one house to another, drinking and eating.
One of the gentlemen had just returned from an excursion through the different distilleries in KY. Had a great collection, including Eagle Rare, Pappy, Blantons and others.
Very tasty indeed.

Years ago a north GA friend gave me a Mason jar of local stuff. Peach. 180-proof. Gee-zoo. I still have about two fingers of it. No peach flavor at all. Just a strong whiff of Armageddon.

I've tried a lot of whiskey over the years. Still, my go to bourbon is Evan Williams black label. Once in a while I go for the white label, which I actually like better but don't always want the extra proof. To me it's the one that's hard to beat for the money!
