I just started A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking. It should be pretty interesting. That does sound appealing. I hope there are illustrations!!! (Kidding!).

Without Conscience, Robert D Hare, 1993. Psychopaths in the general population. There's a surprisingly large number of them among us who aren't serial killers.
Gender Queer, Maia Kobabe, 2019. I'm waitlisted for a bunch of banned books and this one just came up. I didn't realize it's a comic until I opened it. A graphic memoir? The contested novels I have read so far are pretty straightforward YA Bildungsromans that happen to have queer characters. Hardly scandalous stuff.

"Illinois Nazis."
"I hate Illinois Nazis! "
Wait--Field of Dreams was Iowa. I'm thinking of the Blues Brothers.

The Boubon King, Bob Batchelor, 2019. Bio of George Remus, "Prohibition's evil genius." Though I eschew intoxicating beverages these days, I'm living in the cradle of bourbon, so it's an interesting read. Al Capone had nothing on this fellow.

Yeah, they are my favorite writing duo. Ever heard of Jack du Brul? The books he wrote by his self before he got tied up with Clive Cussler are great. The Phillip Mercer series en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Du_Brul

China Miéville, Kraken, 2010. I burned through a collection of his short stories recently and enjoyed them immensely. So far, this one has a missing Architeuthis, a murder, and a Fundamentalist and Sect Related Crime unit (and possibly Rosicrucians--FSRC?). Sci-fi speculative magic realism and cults: right up my street.

Three Moments of an Explosion is the shorts I had previously read. It is definitely not "hard sci-fi." Rather surreal at times. I can't put my finger on it, but he reminds me of Ray Bradbury, somehow.

Ooo this is one for which I was was on the waitlist and it just came up: After the Ivory Tower Falls, Will Bunch, 2022, nonfiction. I'll start it tonight.
Also finishing Pleading Out, Dan Canon, 2022. I would recommend this one to anyone trying to understand America today. He lays out how plea bargaining puts the emphasis on "criminal" over "justice" in our criminal justice system. (Trigger Warning: discusses class injustice* and was written by a uni law professor here in town who was on the Obergefell plaintiff legal team.)
*It irks me when people use the word "woke" improperly. Woke is being aware of and calling out injustice, especially racism. Railing against "woke" is saying you would rather remain ignorant of and support injustice, especially racism. People have every right to do so, but probably are sans clue about what they're actually saying. [Steps off soapbox]

Too me woke is all the made up crap I hear. Don't assume that I'm a bigot racist because I don't want you telling me what I can and can't think and say. I'll stay in my lane and I just want to be left alone.

I wasn't addressing you, Ron, or anyone else specifically. As I stated, people have the right to be racist. My point is that if someone--you, Ron, or anyone else--says they're against being woke, it will be perceived by the general population as being in favor of ignorance of injustice. I'm well within my rights to call ice cream feces. I don't, because I don't really want people to think I like to sit down and gobble feces with chocolate sauce.
It's like "woke Disney." Disney is a corporation beholden to return profits to its shareholders. Period. If someone--not you, personally, Ron--doesn't like seeing minorities portrayed on screen, say, "I don't like seeing minorities portrayed on screen."
Words have meaning. They can and do change over time. It's like using "canceled" to mean "called out" for lies or offensive opinions. I've heard people on large platforms whine repeatedly about being canceled, when that is objectively false, because I can still hear and see them. No, you (cripes. Again, not you personally, Ron) are being told that your ideas are offensive.

My point is that if someone--says they're against being woke, it will be perceived by the general population as being in favor of ignorance of injustice. I am not sure that is universally true. I think there is a percentage of folks for whom it is true, and there are many who don't interpret the word that way. It is controversial and above my pay grade to sort out I am sure. The perfect world would have only two laws: one being don't bother anyone - and an equally important law against being too easily bothered.
