Not looking forward to it. My team can't win even when they win. And they are losing their best players. So I won't be watching anymore.

Yeah, no signs of the sun breaking the horizon, yet, Emily. People keep saying the owners will get reasonable when they start seeing lost revenues from missed games in their near future. Hope it's true, but it hasn't happened yet. At this point, I expect a truncated Spring Training at the very least, and probably a delayed start to the season.

I think that's best case. They are going to lose fans as well as short-term revenue. They've done this too many times for some folks. Both sides need to realize that their butter is breaded by the fans. That said, I ain't goin' nowhere.

That's what the owners are counting on: fans blaming the players for missed games. The fact that it's the owners who are blocking progress is lost on most people. They don't follow that closely. When the season is supposed to start, they'll just know the players aren't taking the field. "What a bunch of spoiled millionaires." That helps the owners.

You're probably right. My local TV news rarely says anything about MLB, but they did have some snippet about the issue, but didn't make it clear that it's a lockout.

I like to watch the games..It's really hard to feel for any of them though. They make millions and still fight for more. I don't really want to delve into baseball economics. Those conversations tend to get political quickly. But most of the players don't make millions. The Dodgers, for example, have the largest payroll in baseball. 70% of their 2021 roster made less than a million. Most of these guys aren't paid as much as people think they are. The big contracts are the ones we hear about, but only the top of the top get those contracts. None of them are exactly hurting for money. But most of them don't actually make millions.

I wonder if the team owners will be sued by the stadium owners and TV companies if the lockout lasts into the season?

Most team owners also own the stadium these days, I think. Not sure about the tv contracts. I would think the lawyers had to have accounted for CBA issues in the negotiation of those contracts. Now, what terms they worked out, I have no idea. Maybe [some] carriers can sue if the lack of content is due to a lockout. Or maybe they just get an automatic reimbursement of some kind.
That would give the owners strong motivation to reach a deal, though, and so far they don't seem to be interested in reaching a deal.

Yeah, the attorney they hired is known as a scorched earth character. I can't figure out what their endgame is. What is the agreement they actually want to reach? Their tactics so far make it seem like they want nothing short of breaking the union, but that's not going to happen and they know it, so I don't know what they do want.

Oh, boy. Minor leaguers are getting free training?! I've had employers with a similar mindset. "Forget about you schlubs--what about MY bottom line?" It's a really bad look.

Worst part is that many minor leaguers don't even make minimum wage! At some point, the labor relations board really has to step in.

The owners' most recent proposal involved lopping off another 30 minor league teams, and giving the commissioner the authority to lop off an unnamed amount more over the term of the CBA. The players rejected that proposal (quite possibly for other reasons, since minor leaguers aren't represented by the MLBPA).
The owners seem to be in full cost-cutting mode. Hang the future. Maximize short-term profits. Basically, they're thinking like private equity investors instead of real owners.

Last summer, Jerry Remy was talking about his minor experience in the 70s. It sounded pretty rough and it hasn't gotten much better. Ditching minor teams is incredibly short-sighted.

We were wondering about this: the owners start losing tv contract dollars when the number of games drops below 140. They can afford to cancel 15 more games before it really starts to bite them in the pocketbook.

I think it means the owners can continue to be pretty uninterested in reaching an agreement for a while, yet, hoping the players' offers move closer and closer to them in exchange for nothing.
I don't really know, but I would bet the first month or so of games aren't big stadium revenue producers for a lot of owners, either. Weather's still too cold.

I don’t want to throw💩 in the game but out of 20 billion dollars for baseball stadiums almost 15 billion was paid by taxpayers. Both the players and the owners share some blame. My Dad loved baseball, that and boxing, we watched a lot of these sports together. Gone are the days when Fans are important!

So, I keep the Red Sox schedule in my Google Calendar and it already filled itself in for the season. My phone beeps at 12:50 every day to tell me that a Spring Training game is starting at 1:05. We have been joking about how well they're doing in that day's match-up. It helps. Go Sox!

I did not know that. Schwarber is leaving Boston is all I know and Boston had an interest in Freeman at one point. I haven't looked at baseball news in days. Scwharber is great, but kind of redundant with J.D., really, and I'd be happy if he went back to the Nationals. I'm sure I'll catch up on things soon.
