Is it just me or does old age mean constant confusion, getting lost while working, forgetting... what... huh!?!
I find it tougher going doing what used to be a snap. You know, like fastening your trousers before going out into the public world. Wondering why there is a wench or hammer in my hand. Computers are the worst. I keep searching for a "C-Prompt".
Anyone else notice this? I am certain you guys are better adjusted!

As measured in years, miles, or hours? Way past warranty, even Extended Extended Warranty. Let us move to a reasonable scale. Years are as inefficient as feet. So, in terms of Centuries, I am in the 0.70 range. Now at least two of our brothers are in their 80s, bless their righteous hearts!. That does not mean I cannot complain or commiserate!

It is the right of every person over 50 to complain, as long as we try not to go completely bitter about it.

I, too, am noticing some of the signs of increasing age. Not to a crippling degree, but just enough to make me understand how far down the road I have traveled...

I have a lot of difficulty doing everyday tasks. The more I do one thing the better I get at it, but when I start another task it's like I'm starting from scratch. And these are things I have been doing for years.

Does that help explain the situation? My comment was made in jest, on a scale of being measured, I should have been buried 5 years ago.

I'm in the same club. This evening I went to make coffee, and after I put the coffee in I started to add water and found the water was already in the unit. My wallet, checkbook, Keys, and such play hide and seek with me throughout the day. It's about the body also. While I don't walk with a cane all the time, there's a cane in every room, and the garage is littered with walking sticks. For years I looked forward to retirement, but I planned on being in better shape. Still, perhaps we should think of the ones who are no longer with us, and thank God we're on the right side of the ground.

I never know when I will get a trick joint or something. It's been a couple of months since I needed one, and I haven't needed it for more than a day in the past few years.

I would have thought the company would treasure your skills.

Linemen are the best, during a aftermath of Hurricane Andrew they were in the marsh behind my camp putting up poles, I fired my pit, had steaks and chicken in the freezer, got cases of beer from local restaurant that had opened,, fed them all day, told them when they knocked off to pass by, loaded them up with cases of beer on their journey to New Iberia at a local motel where they were staying. Yes linemen are a special breed. John I’m sad that you’re treated as such, F^€K Em!

Seriously, though— aging is such an individual process. Some are luckier than others and being (mostly) one of those I don’t take it for granted for a minute. You can’t get past four score and not have some problems. Just being around at that age is a gift to be thankful for. If wishing would make it so I would wish 10-second 100-yard dashes on all oldsters here.

I would have thought the company would treasure your skills. Thanks to everyone for all the support, and kind comments. The industry on the whole sucks for everyone my age, Each Utility entity copy cats the other. Our problem being they did not hire for almost 23 years, and knowing what the outcome would be today, it's to little too late. They do treasure my skills, that's why they eliminated several benefits to make sure I would not walk away, and that's okay, 2 years and 10 months from now, that's exactly what I'm going to do. Please don't think I don't appreciate the pay, and job security that I have, but after many, many broken promises, it tends to leave a bitter and resentful attitude, some of the new hires work for about 2 to 3 years and then they start looking for other positions, We old guys rag them a little by commenting; So you wanna be a Lineman? Long gone are the days when they hired dumb arse farm boys like myself, who were used to a shovel, axe and a hammer, and all the bad elements that go with it.

Sounds like lineman is in about the same place as the construction trades -- no young guys coming up to replace the guys who are about to start retiring. I guess the benefits they're eliminating are retirement-related?

I guess the benefits they're eliminating are retirement-related? Yes, the biggest and most important is, You guessed it, ***Insurance*** When I was hired by the Company 35 years ago, insurance was a paid benefit until I died, spouse was covered until 65. Not now, that's all gone, when you leave the company, you don't have any, That's the only reason I'm still here, and the Company knows that. It was all planned many years ago to run the company on a skeleton crew, and to make sure through benefit elimination and other tactics to keep all the old heads here. Confronted the General Manager of our location about said subject, and did not deny the allegations I made. He knew exactly what I was referring to, and could not give his opinion about it, knowing the outcome if he did comment.

I imagine being a lineman for that many years is really tough on the body, I cannot imagine the stress on the body, and the stresses that come from having to do tasks that are ergonomically damaging over time.
Having said that, I have seen retirees that after working their whole lives go downhill quickly when they adapt to the retired life and the more sedate lifestyle. No longer using the muscles, gaining weight is a bad combo. I do realize that genetics can play a role also.
When you read Ol Ed’s posts, take note. He is gardening, brain power on solving crosswords ( I believe he said that) , watches shows that makes him think (jeaporady!), instead of Mind numbing shows, doing housework, and daily walks and is chugging right along. Try to remain active and do as much exercise that you can reasonably do, keep your body and mind engaged!
Once you start losing stuff, in a sedate lifestyle trying to get it back is much harder.
I know that in regards to the original post, John has faced some health related issues that are a real game changer, so there is certainly that.
Just an observation on my part.

You are correct, and that is a big problem, the Company thinks I'm still 25, and treats me as such, sooner or later, old age catches up, despite being blind, or won't take in account of said situation, it will bite you in the backside hard, all that being said, I have to be outside doing something, even if it is just being outside to just breathe a breath of fresh air.

They all decided to run PSR railroading the big 4 did. The company I used to work for reached 55% of every dollar in thier pocket and are running everything into the ground Union paid off? Federal gov. paid off. F the workers, well when this country runs out of farm boy's where are they gona find any workers? Hoping to start new job next month so please keep me in your positive thoughts/prayers as find a different way for myself and my family.
