When I was young, I was afraid of the dark. Now with the electric prices, I’m afraid of the light.

Bedanged if I can find the “movies watched” thread in this mess, so I will just post here. Last night I watched THE NORTHMAN (2022). Large, famous cast, but you won’t recognize any of them in their “Viking transformation”— not Nicole Kidman OR Bjork. Really extraordinary production design which, If it doesn’t win an Oscar (yawn!), there is no justice and Odin will have his revenge. If you are squeamish about on-screen blood and berserker violence, take a pass. Viking stories have been popular on the screen in the last decade, but this one is different, strong medicine, and memorable. You have been warned. My Viking movie exposure is limited to those two movies made about the same time in the mid 1960s "The Vikings" with Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Janet Leigh, Ernest Borgnine, and Alexander Knox. The other was "The Long Ships" with Richard Widmark, Sidney Poitier, Oscar Homolka. They had about all the violence I want to see. Nice ships and great locations. Both were fun movies. Thanks for the warning about this new one. The Middle Ages, when these guys were roaming around Britain, was a bloody savage time.

Most of this one, John, takes place in Iceland. The environment plays its own part in the savagery.

Most of this one, John, takes place in Iceland. The environment plays its own part in the savagery. Spent most of the summer of 1972 on that island. I can imagine what a tough place it was to winter in. Sod houses and no fuel for heat. Not a tree to be found. No peat. just rocks and moss. Dark.

What's the word on the CPAP machine, toshtego ? Thank you for inquiring. So did I, inquire that is. Yes, it left Apria via Fed Ex this past week. Fed Ex promptly lost it owing to "...conditions beyond our control" "No delivery date scheduled". As far as I know it is still in Santa Fe. John, I am pretty sure you and I are related somehow. You have the same kind of luck my family does! Here's hoping they get that thing found and delivered sooner rather than later!

Roaming around Chicago, one can experience the same thing.

Fact is, they only wore horns on their helmets for ceremonies. In battle it was pretty much what passed for cheap stuff in the age, or not at all.

Not comparable. THE NORTHMAN will change ALL Viking movies from this point on.

Aye, the prices are soaring. Places like bars and restaurants may struggle or even close. I was speaking to someone last week who owns a restaurant and their heating bills went up from £3000 per quarter to £9000 per quarter. As they can't up the cost of the food THAT significantly, they said they may have to close unless things change soon.

As they can't up the cost of the food THAT significantly, they said they may have to close unless things change soon. Is this down to the lack of natural gas from Gazprom, or other issues? We don't get much of our gas from Russia, but we do get some. The war in Ukraine is being blamed for a lot of the rises. Cost of shopping has increased a lot, as has fuel, home heating oil, and electricity. There will be an 80% rise in October for domestic energy, but bars and restaurants don't have the same price cap that domestic residents have, so their price is shooting up a lot more. Even at that 80% rise is crazy, which means less disposable income for eating out...so if restaurants are spending maybe 3 times more on heating and electricity, and people can't afford to eat out at the CURRENT prices, they won't want to increase their prices, but they can't reduce their prices either - it's a catch 22. Despite this, some energy companies were reporting over 14 billion pound profits in the last QUARTER! One such company advised people to do star jumps or to cuddle their pets to keep warm!
