As I expected; the MM Legend Rob Roy with the Aldo Velani balsa wood filter tones down the Old Joe Krantz marvelously. This is much more manageable, whilst still packing a mighty wallop.

As I expected; the MM Legend Rob Roy with the Aldo Velani balsa wood filter tones down the Old Joe Krantz marvelously. This is much more manageable, whilst still packing a mighty wallop. What shape and finish is your Aldo Velani? Truth be told, I don't actually own an Aldo Velani pipe; what I'm referring to is the Aldo Velani 6mm balsa wood filters I was able to order online. When I first received my Missouri Meerschaum Legend Rob Roy, it came with a Dr. Grabow paper filter installed. Not having interest in using a filter at the time, I removed it and set it aside, uncertain if I'd ever put it back in. This whole situation makes a bit more sense with some context; I seldom get the chance to finish a whole bowl any larger than an MM Pony Express in one sitting. Often, I find myself coming back to the last 1/3rd or so of a bowl. Relighting it isn't always the cleanest or most pleasant experience. Sometimes it's got quite a bit more bite than I prefer after having sat for a few hours, or stirring it may break loose bunch of ash. Knowing this, I've not been above simply cutting my losses and tossing it. So at one point fairly recently, having found myself in this sort situation, it occurred to me to try putting in the Dr. G paper filter. And much to my pleasant surprise, it greatly improved the whole experience! And thus, my whole foray into the world of pipe filters was underway. I did an hour or so of research, and learned all kinds of stuff. The Aldo Velani offering struck me as the most intriguing, so I went with that. I'm quite happy I did, because, though I don't always use a filter, it's just another tool in the arsenal to broaden the possibilities of enjoyable experiences. In this case, it greatly improves my experience with Old Joe Krantz; so why not?

Had to skip over a bunch of posts to catch up. If I missed anything good or important, apologies.
I hope to smoke a pipe again sometime before I expire.

When Savinelli balsa filters in quantity were unavailable I bought these filters. They fit well in the Savinelli and the Missouri Meerschaum pipes.
