NWS forecast for here was 70 per cent chance of rain. So far today, nothing. Not one drop. Disappointing. Sounds like you guys could use it.

102 here. Headed for 104 tomorrow. With our usual level of humidity. You can have that humidity, been there once it kicked my butt dryer heat is much more bearable to me. I am not tuff enough to handle it.

Watching the news this morning: “ the private jet crash that, at least according to Russian officials, killed the warlord Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the infamous Wagner mercenary army.” I’m not really following the Ukrainian war that closely, but the Russian government: I could not help but think about Jeffrey Epstein, at some point you knew both of these guys were dead men walking, and that the truth of their demise will forever remain a "mystery."

Still have temps above 110 here, (48 days so far) and the humidity is in the 30's dew point at 65 which is humid for us.
Preparing for a road trip to Colorado and Utah, going to take the wife to Monument Valley, Durango, Silverton, Telluride, etc...family near Salida and Aurora, son in Draper (SLC) Utah.
Making a list, don't want to forget anything.

Russian sources are not reliable. Haven’t been for over 100 years. Odds are they got him, but not really confirmed yet. He may still turn up, but I’m not taking any bets on it.

I was there Thursday night and was indeed blown away! Met my new best friend Bob Friday night at Union Cigar in Gettysburg and enjoyed a once in a lifetime to visit to Boswell in Chambersburg on Saturday. I missed The Tobacco Shop in Ridgewood but I did make it to JR’s a week ago Sunday before meeting up with a couple of pipe buddy’s in Jersey Monday before heading into Manhattan. One of my pipe buddy’s let us stay in his spare midtown apt that had a “pipe lounge” on the roof. I broke in a pair of very special GG 65’s that I picked up that morning In Jersey. We hung out at The Carnegie Club Cigar Lounge after the show Wednesday night. I’ve been to CI Super Stores in Dallas and San Antonio but the Hamburg store was very special!

You really need to get out more Dave, living that sheltered life.
You dirty rat….the only thing missing from that excursion was the ride on the Arturo Fuente private jet for a week in Nicaragua.

I rarely leave the house but this whole trip was an excuse to go to the NASPC Pipe Show in Columbus that I missed. I scored points when I turned us around back to Wi 6hrs/400 miles into our trip two weeks ago Wednesday when we got a call that my mother in law was rushed to hospital with a PR. I survived a widow maker PE years ago so I figured all was lost but since my week in hospital they have developed techniques to remove the clots and she was released the next day. She lives in an old folks home so she is looked after. We missed the pipe show but we had $$$ into Broadway show tickets so we took off again directly to NJ and that gave me the time to get to JR’s in Whippany a week ago today.

Glad that your MIL survived that and is on the mend, glad you were able to salvage a nice trip considering all of that!

The train ride was fun but my favorite part was the free gondola ride to Telluride Village. We really enjoyed the retro motel in Cortez brfore and after after Mesa Verdi and Monument Valley the next day.

That Retro motel looks pretty cool! We are rolling on rewards the whole trip, between Best Western, Hilton, Marriott, Choice, and Wyndham no need to spend money on that.
We went to Mesa Verde, I would like to see it again, I appreciate the tip on Telluride, looking forward to Leadville to see the remnants of my dads old Army mule pack outfit.

I warned both the engineers and the contractor about this soils lack of cohesion having worked with it for years. Why listen to me? So, I am guessing substantial mechanical compaction and armoring the banks with rip rap or gabions backfilled with boulders. Might need to embed a waterproof liner under the fill material. We cannot bring concrete trucks up here as the earth is too soft to support them. We could mix in place and pour into forms. I am curious to see what the engineers recommend.

Rip rap conjures up a nightmare for me. In 79-80 I worked on a construction project in Atherton Ca. on the property of the Haas family’s mansion… the great great whatever of the founder of Levi’s and owned the Oakland A’s.
The entire ditch on the property was rip rapped…. Every bone on my young body ached, and the active ingredients in concrete made my hands feel like they were burned. We loaded the sacks from a Garbo bucket that swung from the mixer via the boom truck. When the hopper dumped the premeasured concrete into the burlap bag it felt like your fingers were catching Andre the giant as you held the bag.
One of the most miserable duties I ever performed in that industry, and helped me recognize that was not a career path for me.
That was one beautiful estate though, I can only imagine what the inside of the house looked like…. The caretakers cottage looked like it came from a Thomas Kinkade painting.
I was told by the caretaker that the family was only there a couple months of the year.

Not sure about great memories, but it was hard work!
My dad bought a RR car full of railroad ties when I was in high school, all unloaded by hand in the sweltering Texas heat. Creosote infused splinters that went through gloves. That was another experience in Hell on earth… that job paid nothing by the way, as I was reminded I had three hots and a cot.

My Propet Blizzard Winter boots arrived today and they fit just fine. Problem is they're the wrong color; I ordered the light brown leather uppers and received the dark brown. When I went to the website of the retailer that I bought them from, I saw that my size in the light brown were sold out. Because these boots are difficult to get, I'll live with the dark brown. I don't want to go through another Winter without insulated boots.

It finally cooled off here. High around 90, I think. I'm on day 3 of trying to change my sleep medicine, which means I haven't gotten much sleep worth the name in a while and I have a rollicking great headache. But the medicine I've been taking for years is making me put on too much weight. It has the side-effect of making you hungry shortly before bed. My metabolism always ran so fast, it didn't much matter, but, like everything else, that's slowing down now.

Today I joined the Facebook group for the Navy ship that I served on, the USS Lawrence (DDG-4). I was warmly greeted by general members as well as by past shipmates and good friends. One lives nearby in Canton, so I'm sure we'll be getting together soon. I haven't seen most of the guys that I served with since I left active duty in 1975. My reception was very heartwarming for this old man.

Mixing in place would take forever.

My internet is going up and down like a pogo stick. About every 5 minutes, it craters. Xfinity says there's no problem in my area.
