What a beast, Ted! Now that is a lap pipe if I have ever seen one, a three hour lap pipe.
Did it come with the flexible tubing or Cherrywood stem? I would love to see the stemwork.
German or Austrian I suppose, Autosol metal polish will bring the metal to it's former glory.
Nice score!
You are not going to see a pipe like that from Turkey, I wish they would relax their import practices, I can only imagine what artisan carvers could produce with their skill set...bring back the beauty of meerschaum with a rocket pack attached.

Wow. You gonna smoke it, or club intruders with it? Both? But seriously, are you gonna smoke it? Any idea of its origin? Definitely both if the right situation arises I won’t be able to resist trying it out. It came with its original stem, just too big to include in my photos. I was well maintained and it won’t take too much effort to get it into smokable shape.

12 tins of Gawith brown sugar flake (1.3 pounds)...I have never smoked this, but the reviews put it at the top O'The Heap! All vacuum sealed to be aged for six months>my expiration date. Will be shared with pipe smoking buddies.

Thanks! My guess is Austrian, 1820-1840. There is a coat of arms which I will research to see if I can find any info on it. I haven’t figured out what those fancy initials on the lid stand for and until it’s polished, I don’t think I’ll be able to find any maker’s marks. I included photos of the stem, which I highly doubt is original.

I think that the stem is original. I have the round/ scalloped piece like yours on one of my pipes, that tightens up the stem. Although the flexible stem on my pipe appears in excellent condition, drawing through the stem there is an obviously loss of draw. I bypass the flex part and draw from the cherrywood stem. I would like to find a restorer to replace the flex tubing, but I have yet to find a source.
Regardless, it is quite magical to smoke one of these pipes leisurely as you think about the codger that smoked it long before you were thought of. One can only imagine the history of that pipe, and based on my research, I think that your dating is pretty spot on.
I benefit greatly in the holiday season smoking my lap pipes… for whatever the reason, they are extremely rewarding at that time… as to the custodians of former lives, I think that they enjoyed them year- round!

That pipe is a work of art! I'm interested in seeing any follow up posts on restoring/smoking it

Among many things I got in the mail I received what is competing for my finest antique meerschaum pipe in my collection. This is as I got it, uncleaned. It’s huge, I wear XXL size gloves for perspective. The bowl portion is the size of a pop can. All of the silver is expertly jeweler worked. The initials on the lid are solid gold set in the silver. There is a coat of arms on the bottom. I’m really happy with this one. How big is the chamber on that thing? It looks like it could hold a couple of tins! Holy cow!!!

On Saturday I received an order from 4Noggins that included a bunch of C&D blends that I had always meant to get around to trying plus some tobacco to restock blends in my cellar. Those included multiple tins of Hyde Park, Mac Baren Virginia Flake and two tins of Mac Baren Roll Cake. Upon opening the package, I found they sent me two tins of Vanilla Roll Cake instead of the two tins of just Roll Cake. I’m well stocked on Vanilla Roll Cake or I would have just kept them. I sent an email explaining what happened and asking to confirm the address to return them to. I wasn’t upset about it, mistakes happen and they’ve always been excellent in their prices and service.
I just received an email from 4Noggins confirming they had just refunded me for the two tins I didn’t receive and telling me to just keep the Vanilla Roll Cake. Incredibly nice of them, although I feel kinda bad about it. Those are $20 tins their price, $23+ each at most other tobacco sites. They are definitely getting my next order.

Glad to hear they are making a comeback.

Glad to hear that they are chugging along.

I wouldn't do business with the former owner because of price gouging when certain tobaccos became hard to find. I'm a customer of the new owner finding his pricing to be fair and the service fast.

Yeah, I’m kinda curious what years we’re talking about here. I quit doing business with them a couple years ago, after a very bad experience.

I’m curious about this too. I used to order from 4Noggins many years ago and didn’t have any issues, but I quit buying from them for quite a while, just because I was finding sales elsewhere at the time. I started ordering from them again maybe a year and a half ago and have always had good experiences.

Pretty sure there has only been two owners, for the life of me I cannot remember his name, based in Vermont. Sold to the current owner who was on a learning curve and dropped the ball, but I think he figured it all out.
That is the way I remember it, but I could be wrong.

Haven't shopped 4Noggins in some time, they just haven't had the assortment. But never had issues with them when I did. Didn't know there was drama there, though.
