A small vial of obsidian oil. My oldest Pete House Pipes are getting dingy in the stem, so I ordered it. It arrived today. I followed the directions that came with it and “did” my oldest House, which was the worst afflicted of the two. OK. It worked. Dramatic? Like new? No. But much better than it was. Then I went online to see if there were any discussions of this process. Yes. But some folks said olive oil was just as good. (NOW they tell me!) So I tried some Extra Virgin on the second House. Lo and behold the results were just as good, if not maybe a tetch shinier than the obsidian. Now to see how they both last. We learn as we go!

Did the olive oil impart a flavor to the bit?

Did the olive oil impart a flavor to the bit? No, but I did think I heard the theme to THE GODFATHER off in the distance somewhere.

500 grams of Brown Clunee shipped from Top Hat Tobacco today. When I placed my order last night, they also had Marlin Flake, Hal o The Wynd and Old Gowrie in stock. Also, took advantage of the C&D sale at SP.

My monthly tobacco order is out for delivery today...six tins of my regular VA flake. Wessex Brown VA Flake and Wessex Brigade Campaign VA Flake are still sold out and I have no idea why the availability is so spotty.

A 1999 Penguin Classics copy of Jame Joyce's Finnegans Wake. It's in really great condition for a 24 year old paperback but the pages have severely yellowed. A hefty tome at 628 pages, and it's nowhere near at the top of my next 50 books to read yet.

The first pipe that I bought at the Chicago Show today is a Jason Patrick Billiard. I had never heard of him before last night. This Billiard had caught my eye last night in the tent and I bought it this morning. A good friend of mine has been tracking Jason's work for a couple of years and had said that his stem work had leveled up during the past year. This is pipe #303 of Jason's. His work can be seen on Facebook under Jason Patrick Pipes. I smoked two bowls in this pipe today and it smokes great.

The second pipe that I bought at the Chicago Show today is a Joe Hinkle bamboo shank Apple. I have known Joe for about 8 years and have admired his work. For quite some time, he’s been on my short list of carvers who I should really own a pipe from but the right one hadn’t called to me yet. When I walked up to Joe's table today, this one immediately caught my eye and I found I was reaching for my wallet even before I picked up the pipe. Love at first sight. Two bowls in it today and it smokes great.

Definitely jealous johnlawitzke as I once again this year didn't make it to Chicago. However, I'm saving up piles of cash to wipe out NASPC this year. I'm coming prepared to party hard when I hit Columbus, believe that.

Some cigars and accoutrements, dang it. Painless, wasn't it? Not at all, actually. Went to all the trouble to find stuff and put it in the cart at Cigars International, went to check out, and discovered their checkout process doesn't work unless you allow trackers, etc. I don't do that. Had to go redo the process, finding different stuff, at SP. I mean, I'd rather do business with SP, but they don't quite have the selection CI has on that front.

The Avo cigars I liked back then don't appear to be made anymore. I was disappointed to find my favorite Fuentes (Don Carlos, Hemingway) are scarce. In fact, Ecuadoran Sumatra-wrapped stogies in general looked like they were mostly on backorder in the places I looked. I wonder if that's a COVID/supply chain thing.

Beautiful pipes John and thanks for all the updates from the show! I'm waiting on a new cob and some classics that I'm excited to try: Capstan Blue, Orlik Golden Slices, Early Morning Pipe, My Mixture. But those were all things I had sitting on my wishlist that I was waiting to bundle in my next order. The real treasure is a Kaywoodie super grain bulldog from the 1940s. It's my first estate pipe purchase and I was enthralled to have a pipe from that era even though it has a replacement stem. Any Kaywoodie experts that can help educate me on identifying characteristics to either further date the pipe or explain how SP dated it to the 1940s? I tried asking their customer service department but received a bit of a brush off reply that boils down to expert knowledge and research. Linked below is the posting, I'll try to post some photos when I receive it and reset my long forgotten imgur account. www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/united-states/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=546749

Nice proportions to it. Congrats! (Sorry, I don't know anything about Kaywoodie markings.) ETA: This might be helpful. pipedia.org/wiki/Collector%27s_Guide_to_Kaywoodie_PipesEATA: In fact, there's your bulldog, right there in the photo from the 1947 catalog.
