Which Heinrich’s blends did you score, John? All five are New #30. I bought all five that they had in stock as it’s hard to find. #30 changed recipes about 3 years ago. Old #30 was VaPer + Syrian Lat. The VaPer part was broken up Special Curly coins to which Syrian Lat was added. One of my top favorite blends. Three years ago, SP got some #30 in stock. Assuming it was the #30 that it was the #30 I loved but now probably with Cyprian, I had ordered four cans. Imagine my shock when I received the cans and find a totally different blend described on the bottom label. New #30 is a VaBur + Cyrprian Lat and Black Cav. No Perique. I tried some and it was OK, but I was disappointed and angered by the surprise change. I jarred up the one I opened and set it aside. About a year later, I was over my emotional response and pulled out the jar. I was happy to find that new #30 is quite good after aging and melding for a year. Since then, I’ve learned that this was not an isolated case of Heinrich's changing recipes recently. They appear to be eliminating Perique from their blends. Curly Block is no longer a VaPer; it’s a VaBur. There’s no longer Perique in the Special Curly coins. Also, fans of Dark Strong are in for a disappointment as well… no more Dark Fired Kentucky… 🤷♂️ If you have a favorite Heinrich's, look closely before you buy. Luckily for me, it worked out OK. I still have quite a few cans of Old #30 cellared and have found a new blend to like in New #30.

Nice bag of Green Dragon too johnlawitzke. What's your plan for it (do you mix it, age it, or just smoke it as is)? That's weird about Heinrich's - why do you suppose they're scrubbing Perique and DFK from their blends? I heard PH Dark Strong is one to try, but probably not anymore without the Kentucky.

I was down to a single can of the Dark Strong Flake a little over two years ago and I saw it back in stock, ordered five tins and put them away. I just opened one a few months back and was surprised it was a different tobacco. After a little smoking I decided I like the new version, but not so much that I would have ordered five tins plus I miss the old one. Kind of turned me off to ever ordering Heinrich’s again.

That's weird about Heinrich's - why do you suppose they're scrubbing Perique and DFK from their blends? I heard PH Dark Strong is one to try, but probably not anymore without the Kentucky. Green Dragon - All of the above. It smokes ok when it arrives, but I like to age most everything at least a year. I get a bit of caramel flavor from it, but the official description just says straight Virginia and doesn’t mention a topping. I’ve asked Jon David about it and he just smiles and refuses to answer. 🤷♂️ Besides smoking it straight, I also use it in a personal blend which I call Late Night Dragon. This blend is 2 parts Paul's Late Night Smoke and 1 part Green Dragon. Late Night Smoke is from Paul's Pipe Shop in Flint, MI. That blend is a "Nightcap Alternative" and consists of Virginia and generous amounts of Latakia and Perique. I have about 2.5 lbs of the original version of Late Night made with Syrian Latakia. Over time, I’ve decided that the Latakia and Perique levels are higher than I prefer. I found that the taste of Green Dragon compliments the Late Night Smoke well. Heinrich's - I have no idea. Maybe they are intentionally moving away from components that are harder to get or cost more in Europe?

Thank you for the thesis on Henrich’s, John! I mean that in a good way, valuable information for anyone considering buying the blends based on past experience. “ Heinrich's - I have no idea. Maybe they are intentionally moving away from components that are harder to get or cost more in Europe?” That would be my guess….Peter died a few years ago, I have never heard of his house of 10,000 pipes is still going and if someone else was given the blending recipes to keep production going? An old article from Arno: dutchpipesmoker.com/2013/10/05/heavenly-heinrichs/

An old article from Arno: dutchpipesmoker.com/2013/10/05/heavenly-heinrichs/Yet another example of why you should cellar deep if you find a blend that you really really like. Heinrich's blends are manufactured by K&K. So, the recipes are known as long as the owner of the brand wants to keep going. The store is still there. www.peterheinrichs.de/

Amen! I have 4-7oz. tins of the Dark Strong Flake from 2016, when it still had the Dark Fired Kentucky . I am glad that I bought it when I did, that was the blend I had a history with. But...for someone like Jiminks, he dropped a star for that same blend because he had smoked the one that had preceded and felt that they had cut corners....an interesting chronology. Four stars to one over the course of time! www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/1809/peter-heinrichs-dark-strong-flakeI just wish I could find my old sticks of Curly Block...pretty weird, I had 3 or 4 in a jar and cannot find them. TR says that the DSF is blended by STG John, was that in the past or a recent change? K&K seems to make more sense given PH's long history and contacts in the German market.

You could be right on STG, but maybe not since it comes in the K&K style paint can. I don’t smoke DSF… does it come as 18” long flakes rolled up in the paint can? If yes then that’s K&K. K&K makes most but not all Heinrich’s. When Curly Block was a VaPer, the logs were made by MacBaren.

I cannot comment on current production DSF, but my 2016’s look like the paint can, but the top is foil that you peel back with a plastic lid.

Nice blast, nice execution, Duane! It looks like you made a nice score. Michael was concerned about the overall dimensions given that it has a 2+ inch chamber depth but he came through with flying colors. Both of us were concerned that the ivory snake jump stem would've been too light colored for an unstained stummel, but it turned out to be the icing on the cake!

I had a busy week last week and didn’t get a chance to take pics and post them when this arrived. Ronv69 decided to part with his unsmoked Savinelli Mon Ami Billiard which I happily added to my collection. Savinelli’s stamped Mon Ami are pipes which the Mr. Savinellis would give to friends and business associates. This is a great add to my Savinelli collection. Thanks Ronv69! Schiit Freya-S pre-amp and PYST XLR cables. Nice! I happen to own one of those, myself. I'm not going to color your expectations of its overall sound and performance. I'll just say I've been pleasantly surprised that the relay noise isn't as distracting as I feared. It's very audible when nothing's playing, but at moderate listening levels I can hardly hear them clicking and clacking. Oh, and I will warn you that power up/down sequence matters with this one. It will pop when switched on or off if your power amp is still on.

I'll be interested to hear your experience and what you're pairing it with.

I had a great time at the Arrowhead Pipe Club meeting at Paul's Pipe Shop last night. While there, I looked around for something to buy in order to support the shop as business has been really slow as a result of the rebuild of Saginaw St. in front of the shop. I ended up parking a block and a half away and using the alley to get to the back door. Some Dan Tobacco Roper's Roundels caught my eye. There's no date on them, but based on the other stuff in the large estate cellar they came into the shop from, I'm guessing the tins are 10 to 13 years old. Also, a group 3 sized Cayuga Liverpool caught my eye.
