The unraveling of complexity is one of the great pleasures taken by the historian. And history has never been un-complex. (Maybe it was simple when Trog killed Ugg for his cave because his own was drafty. But then again— maybe he coveted Ugg’s woman, or that haunch of mastodon, or his pile of fire wood, or maybe Ugg has insulted Trog’s prowess with a atlatl. Hmm.)
So maybe it really is always a ripe puzzle for the curious and the true historian. It’s so much easier for the un-curious and the self-righteous, agenda-driven ideologue. For them the answer is always simple and they are always right because they have the un-complex answers provided by their agenda or their hatred. The historian does not have that easy-out. He has to do some thinking, an effort the un-curious can so easily avoid.

It's interesting that some people, by accident of birth, think they are superior to another group of people who were born below an imaginary line. The south didn't invent slavery. I bet that at some point, Dave's ancestors owned slaves and were slaves.

I bet that at some point, Dave's ancestors owned slaves and were slaves. Not wanting to lurch into political speech so I will just say that the South has produced some of the finest Americans. Writers, military officers, soldiers, statesmen, musicians and artists. Most of the folks I encountered over the years were folks I was glad to have known. Certainly, Slavery was among our darkest hours as a nation. Ditto the treatment of native people by those above and west of the imaginary line mentioned above. Shame knows no boundary.

Not much talk from those who like to deplore our own history about modern slavery, which is far more prevalent than slavery in the 19thC. The numbers are daunting. So where is the hue and cry about that? It’s much easier to tear down old statues than to confront a modern evil.

Some conversations are better left to grown men sharing a good bottle hooch in a private setting.

Raining cats and poodles in the swamp since about three AM with a little hail added in for excitement. The better half pointed out a crack in 16oz starbuckys mug from 2011 after thirteen years I probably got my monies worth. Lost 40 lbs since my last blood work visit the only thing I did different was only eat dinner and cut out other meals.

I wonder how many times the Civil War has been refought over whiskey.

Eli likes to run at high speed and pass close by. I've been afraid of what could happen and today it did. He knocked me arse over tea-kettle. I thought I had broken. my arm, but no. It's not malicious on his part, just fun. So now no more walks without a walking stick that can reach him. Got him once after this and he yelped so maybe that's progress. Hate to hit him but it's a survival issue now. Couple more times, if it takes that much, and maybe he'll steer clear.

I guess he's got cabin fever, which is understandable, but yeah, a little bit of correction is in order if it happens again. I don't know how sensitive GSPs are to their humans, but I know that if I curled up and pretended to cry when the Weimaraner got too rough, he was a lot gentler afterwards. He just knocked me down a couple of times while playing, never injured me, on thick St Augustine grass.

Hello from Kuala Lumpur. Standing in front of the iconic Petronas Towers or Twin Towers. Dang. Looks like something out of Flash Gordon! Hope you're enjoying yourself, Ted. Great trip! Already looking forward to spending a month here next winter. In the meantime riding out my last two months in Thailand- Cambodia. Cheers…..

It's 46 on the patio right now and temps are still climbing. Gonna be 50 or better by daylight. It's breezy, though, and the breeze blowing across the frozen ground and what's left of the snow still puts some nip in the air.

I emptied the rain gauge at noon. It was full at 7 inches. I tried to find a Texas rain gauge of 24 inches, but no luck. They should make one for Houston that holds 60 inches. Anyway, still raining for the rest of the week. The creeks behind and beside the house are showing rapids. The pond is full and we are warm and dry, 59 degrees. PBTG. Happy 12324!

So far, I think we've gotten less than predicted. Maybe it's being emptied on you before it gets here.

Living just north of Houston in the mountains 270ft above sea level. I simply gave up measuring the rain fall. Other things I don't even bother with are a rain coat or a heavy winter coat. It is highly enjoyable watching folks trying run in the rain only to wipe out or dress up like Eskimos in forty degree weather. With all that said it is still raining it really just depends on your perspective.
