The rain is falling, the river is rising and the pipe is smoking! Having a bowl of Prince Andrew in the 2016 CCN POTY... A bottle of water alongside...

Well, the downside to a short, mild winter is rearing its ugly head: the mosquitoes are already out and about.

I had 2 different ones on my Frontier. The first was a roll-up. It was a PITA. The next was a tri-fold and I loved that one. I had the high 4 door and the bed was so tiny I almost had to get a hitch-rack for the cooler. Ran out of time so just got a smaller cooler. I got the tri-fold...4 door also. www.amazon.com/dp/B07S58GJTL?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_detailsPretty easy, no tools impressed with the look and price...$161.00 The local "topper" establishments were quite expensive by comparison.

Found out this morning that a friend and colleague passed away. He was a Preacher, retired teacher and very strong man of God working hard for his community. He was diagnosed a couple months ago with cancer, and being the private person he was, asked that the family be allowed to have private time with him to the end. He was supportive of me when I announced my call to preach, always being an encouragement to me. He will be missed.

Mid-50s here today but it's overcast and the air is damp, so it feels more like high 40s.

I’m editing a book by an historian friend about this area. I knew it was a wild place, but hadn’t the bit-by-bit detail about just how wild it was. If they weren’t shooting each other up it was the Indians (Lakota) doing the wet work. Editing/proofing is basically boring, stultifying work. It’s nice when you can learn something while you are doing it, and I’m learning a great deal. His family homesteaded the place on which I live and he is an absolute fount of detailed knowledge about every square inch.

Sounds like a fun project, Bob. I actually enjoy editing. Proofreading . . . meh.
I got chilled out there this afternoon and I can't seem to shake it. Had a mug of hot chocolate, but I've still got a chill.

It sounds like your friend was a rock in a shifting world, and it appears he has a great testimony, John. As he passed through the veil, he is infinitely in a better place than the rest of us.

I want to shill for Apple for a moment. I have been using their dictation feature quite a lot lately. It is not the feature that you may have used a decade ago. The first revolutionary step they took was to move the entire function to “within the machine.” No more sending the dictation out for transcription it all takes place in the device. Next up was accuracy. Early speech to text was notoriously bad, creating many humorous renditions but not much sense. The latest version, on Apple at least, is extremely accurate and requires very little if any editing. I have found it a great saver. Most of my posts here lately have been done with dictation. I would highly recommend that you give it a try if you have the hardware available. This post was made with dictation. Only one correction was needed when the device could not distinguish between shill and chill.
(I am using iPad Pro with iOS 17.)

In printing we tried to use optical character recognition, and it always took more than time to fix it that to retype it. I thought that they had perfected voice recognition on my previous phone, a Oneplus 7 pro. It got old and I had to get a Samsung 23+ and I have had to quit using the voice recognition. It can't get anything right. I have retrained 3x with no improvement. Really not ready to go back Apple though. Glad to hear that it works for you.

I tried Dragon back in 98 or 99 and it was useless. If they still sell it they must have put a lot of work into it.

I tried dragon around 2008 I am sure they have it all fixed by this point in the game on version 16. Of course windows 11 has voice recognition built in. No I have not tried either one.

Everybody remember to spring their clocks forward this morning? I wish we could decide on one or the other and stop this shifting nonsense. Pain in the neck for us…The state of Arizona doesn't participate in daylight savings time, but within the state the Navajo tribal lands do, The Hopi do not. Excerpt From an article: apnews.com/article/daylight-saving-arizona-navajo-hopi-native-american-a1016ce873b772ffae544de9fbcd29d9“ It’s made for an especially unique situation with the Hopi reservation, which is landlocked within the Navajo Nation and goes by standard time year-round. A stretch of U.S. 160 in Tuba City is the de facto border between the two reservations and two time zones. Reva Hoover, longtime manager of the Bashas’ supermarket along U.S. 160 on the Navajo side, says Sunday will inevitably be chaotic. Despite posting reminders in the locker room, employees who live on both reservations likely will arrive late. Tourists might not be aware. Guests staying at the Moenkopi Legacy Inn & Suites on the Hopi side across the street who come into the grocery store at what they think is 8:30 p.m. would have only 30 minutes to shop before it closes, Hoover said.

My uncle Glennie had a small place in Prescott Valley we used to go over for the horse races every year and it was a joy to have sunshine at 9.30PM.

I agree on doing away with daylight savings time. I’d prefer we stayed on it for a later sunset, but I’d be happy if we just stopped switching.
The line between Eastern and Central time used to go right down the middle of Indiana. The eastern half did not do daylight savings time. So, for half the year, the whole state would be on the same time. Several years ago, they shoved the timezone line to the western border of the state except for the three NW counties around Chicago which stayed on Central time. I live 48 miles north of the eastern half of Indiana. So, when I’d go to Ft. Wayne, I’d have to stop and think about what time of year it was.

Trying to get motivated to clean my smoker. Warm day for it. I need to get a few more tools and a good lidded ash can. I did some brats over applewood last weekend. They were really good. I will start making my own brats soon and hope they work as well as the Boulder Sausage brats. Those are excellent, by the way. What kind of smoker do you have? I recently bought a small pellet smoker from Green Mountain Grills. I’m loving it.

What kind of smoker do you have? I recently bought a small pellet smoker from Green Mountain Grills. I’m loving it. I wanted to learn how to smoke, with real wood charcoal. Several Southern friends at work recommended learning that first. I bought a Weber 18” Smokey Mountain about a year ago. Finally started using it this year. I am really enjoying it. Trying the easy things first. Ribs are up next on my agenda. I get lots of good advice from the friends. I also have a Portable Kitchen grill/smoker, and real wood charcoal does produce better results than the pellets. But it takes a lot of attention. I like the little pellet smoker because I can just throw some ribs or pork butt on it and forget about it, until dinner’s ready. Good luck on your ribs!

Any recommendations for a starter smoker? Been over to Amazon and the selection is daunting.

The only Weber experience I have is with the large kettle, but they make quality products, and The smoky mountain has good reviews. If you lived in a more heavily populated area, I would suggest looking online. I got this Oklahoma Joe's Longhorn grill with a bunch of nice smoker mods for $200. thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/9194/smoker-upgrade-today

I do recommend getting a remote bbq alarm, money well spent, and this is the best I have used. The neat thing is that it shows tenths of degrees, pretty easy to see when the temp drops ever so slightly...A real benefit when you are in for the long haul with a Full brisket, or Pork Butt. www.thermoworks.com/smoke/A Thermapen by the same company is the best instant read thermometer I have ever used. They do not warranty their products sold on Amazon...them are sold by resellers, and Amazon favorites they recommend are made with a similar sounding name, but made by a Chinese company. And a galvanized can...this one handles hot coals just fine and the tight lid cuts off the oxygen...Amazon has a black ash can that has a nifty ash scoop and brush that fits in a sidepocket, but reviewers say that they have had burnouts. www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/behrens-10-gallon-galvanized-steel-utility-trash-can
