I have returned and am unpacking, after another excursion into the desert. Staying in temporary workforce lodging (a man camp) means plenty of time to do nothing, so I have been working on my Hebrew. I typically use a program on my computer (Logos 8 Academic Professional) for this sort of thing but circumstances led me to do otherwise for the past week.

That's quite an undertaking! Trying to become proficient in Hebrew has been much more laborious than Greek, though I have no idea why.

I’ve got Middlemarch in a hardback boxed set. I’ve got 3 copies of it. The Folio Society one with slipcover, the one that’s part of the set of her novels I posted in the mail thread recently, and a Penguin paperback that’s the one I’ve marked up.

It’s like pipes or anything else where you can have hobbyist levels, or high end collector level. A $50 pipe, or an $8,000 pipe. Limited editions and higher quality small-scale binders are paying illustrators commisions for their works for these editions and they are higher end Smyth-sewn bindings, archival paper, better boards, custom artwork etc. They are for those willing to pay more as collectors. Just as most don’t own S. Bang pipes, most can’t own high end limited editions by their very nature.
Even outside of these relatively cheap limited edition modern prints, prices for 1st editions of Dune, Blood Meridian, The Great Gatsby and other similar classics now range from $20k-$100k+. A fine 1st edition in Chilton Press of Frank Herbert’s Dune is about $25,000 now.

I'm not knocking the fancy books. I admire them. I'm just more interested in what's printed on the page. I have several signed first editions and my very first merit badge was bookbinding. I also was in the same union as the bookbinders for many years. If these books were first editions, or even rebound first editions I would be more interested. Do you have any idea what the profit margin is on those books? It's a created industry that reminds me of the collector plates from the 80s. All that doesn't mean I wouldn't want to handle one. I'd even wear gloves.

Oh I imagine the profit margin is huge. Their regular Folio versions being around $60-100 something show that.

In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash by Jean Shepard I remember that came out when I was in high school and I bought it for my mom. I think I read it too. Shephard was a great writer.
