Tilshead were James Upshall seconds. Mostly for cosmetic reasons.

Go and buy some lottery tickets while your luck is hot! If the Tilshead is in decent shape, you stole it. Tell me more you guys, I know nothing about them. It just instantly caught my eye as a big Canadian with nice wood. The grain is identical on the other side too. It’s a little more defined in person than in this photo. That's a very handsome pipe, Ted. Maybe you'll discover a cosmetic flaw in the cleanup process, but I sure don't see one in that pic.

This all got me curious and I started studying it. I found the flaw, which once I found it, it seems obvious, but it wasn’t at first. It is visible in the photo. The top of the shank where it meets the bowl was cut too far down. There is a dip there. It’s more obvious in this photo.

Don't want you to lose money on the deal.

Good score, Ted. A Pete and Tilshead, too!

Tilshead were James Upshall seconds. Mostly for cosmetic reasons. Upshall's quality standards were extremely high. "Seconds" might be too strong of a word. I like to say a Tilshead is an Upshall with a tiny sandpit. James Upshall's founders came out of Charatan. My personal opinion is that Upshall is my second favorite English brand behind Dunhill.

In the mail today, a group 3 Parker Russet lumberman. Needs a good reaming and cleaning and cleaning. The rim is slightly dinged and rounded from a previous owner knocking the pipe on a hard surface. There's also a bit of rim cake. I'll post some photos later on.

But when the 2024 Christmas pipes come out I may pick up a Pete or Sav if I like them this year. Other than that I will be waiting for Peretti to release Yuletide... maybe their Thanksgiving blend as well.

That pipe is a beauty. Nice get! Thanks. I do love my Nordings! They make a fine pipe. They tend to be too heavy for my tastes, but I’ve got a couple.

My Nording arrived today. I am super happy with it. I'll be honest, I saw it and based my decision on that alone and just imagined it was the same size as most Nording Freehands. I did not look at the dimensions even though they were plainly there. Anyway, it is much smaller than I imagined which actually works out really good for me. It is a fantastic pipe. Here are the dimensions...
STAMPING: 3 NØRDING MADE IN DENMARK Length: 5.37 in./136.40 mm. Weight: 1.68 oz./47.63 g. Bowl Height: 2.36 in./59.94 mm. Chamber Depth: 1.67 in./42.42 mm. Chamber Diameter: 0.81 in./20.57 mm. Outside Diameter: 1.65 in./41.91 mm. Stem Material: Acrylic Filter: None Shape: Bent Dublin Finish: Smooth Material: Briar Country: Denmark

I will try to get a better picture of it in my hand to show the dimensions.

Here it is. Very nice! Even with a conical chamber, that'll hold a lot of tobacco.

Here it is. That's just lovely. I really like Preben Holm pipes, especially the Harcourt series he made for Dunhill, though my favorites are a 69 and a 70 freehand.

Danish made Nørdings were great pipes. The Polish made modern ones are good pipes but they’re not as great as T when the factory was in Denmark. Happy smokes!
