The post office delivered an 8 ounce bottle of stem oxidation remover from Briarville a few minutes ago. I've got to pick out a pipe to try it out on. Let me know how it works out. I've always been curious about this. Swabbed some on to a couple stems a little while ago. I'll put on another coat and check in a couple hours.

I wrapped the stems with some paper towel and swabbed more juice into the towel. Just took a look at one of the stems. It appears to be a dull black color. I'll let them marinate until after dinner. Then I'll wipe them down and rinse them. Well see how they look then. Hopefully just a polish on the buffer with white diamond and a little obsidian oil. I hope it works, I really don't enjoy wet sanding stems.

If it's light oxidation, I just use one of the many brands of stem polish. If it's heavy I burn it off with an alcohol burner.

Not in the mail yet, but scored this nice Castello Sea Rock 31 on the Bay today. My first Castello. It's crunchy looking! Is it a billiard? An apple? A Roma tomato? I also bought a bottle of stem de-oxidizer from Briarville. Arrived today. Needs reaming and salt/alcohol cleaning of internals. There is rim cake and wax build-up to remove. A good scrubbing and it'll be ready to go. I'll post a few photos later.

Not pipe related, but in the mail, nonetheless, is this set of George Eliot novels from her original publisher:

Using this de-oxidizer appears to eliminate the need for any sanding on regular vulcanite. I still had to buff the stems out with white diamond. I would not recommend using on Cumberland. I'm trying it out on an old Grabow Ajustomatic stem. This stuff works, but it's no magic bullet.

These remind me that the old saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover” should be “Don’t judge the contents of a book by its cover”. Absolutely beautiful.

And in this case, the covers represent the contents pretty darn well. Middlemarch, for my money, is the finest, most humane novel in the English language. I've read it 4 or maybe 5 times, now, and look forward to spending some good hours with this edition. With the exception of Felix Holt, which seems to be too specific to its time, all her other novels are well loved, too. I'll enjoy digging into them.

I just ordered a Chacom: Brown Smooth Reverse Calabash pipe and some Sutliff’s Eastfarthing tobacco. Just what I needed - another pipe. Somebody please stop me! Nice! I'll be interested to hear how it smokes. I just smoked the pipe today for the first time. It was fabulous! I smoked Sutliff's Eastfarthing Tobacco and used an Altinay Bowl Filter. I smoked it fresh out of the tin. The tobacco and the pipe are both sensational! This was arguably the best smoke I've ever had. Review

I've read Silas Marner 4 times. I keep meaning to read Middlemarch You need to read “Dreams From My Father” 5 times to straighten you out. Now I have to read Fahrenheit 451 6 times to clear that from my head. I've had Middlemarche on the shelf for years.

My tobacco order will be delivered today as well as a new electric can opener. Open a lot of electric cans, do you? We had one that cut the lid off from the side and it was great...no sharp lid edges and we had it for years. Then we started running across cans that couldn't be opened with the side cut. So, after doing some research, we found a good, well-reviewed traditional opener.

Be careful you don't go sticking your hand down in one, forgetting there'll be an edge there, now.

We're on our second opener that leaves a smooth edge. I keep a manual crank opener for anything it won't open, which is rare.

Not in the mail exactly, but on the truck. A new recliner that matches my wife's. Power recline, headrest, and lumbar support. Brown leather. Expensive but I'm worth it. 😁

For someone who only had used furniture into my 30s it is ridiculously expensive. But it's far from the most expensive recliner you can get. Everything is ridiculously expensive these days. It boggles my mind the prices of vehicles. If I wasn't on a fixed income I guess it would be different. I retired 7 years ago making a good salary, but if I was still in that position I would be getting over 300k, which would make a 90k pickup seem reasonable. The chair, by the way, is the same price as we paid for the wife's 4 years ago. Can't complain much about that.

I also received this. I don’t know the backstory of how this came to be the way it is, but it’s a large, really nicely made and unsmoked meerschaum with a nearly ideal to me bowl size and depth. I will be making a stem for it at some point, hopefully soon.
