Didn't want to hijack the what are you smoking thread to ask a non related question so I brought it here.
As a big fan of sodas, I pay particular attention to JimInks' drink of choice in his what are you smoking entries. Some I know and like, such as Cheerwine, while others I have never heard of. I have noticed that there is a distinct lack of colas in his listings. Now for my questions for Mr. Inks.
Do you not care for colas or just prefer fruit sodas?
Why haven't I ever seen you drinking Ski, the orange and lemon soda put out by the makers of Double Cola? It was my understanding that it was quite popular in your state.

Great question!! I like coffee with my pipe or on a hot day outside San Peligrino water is very nice at quenching my thirst and clearing any "hot summer day" sticky mouth I may have!

Why haven't I ever seen you drinking Ski, the orange and lemon soda put out by the makers of Double Cola? It was my understanding that it was quite popular in your state. I've never seen Ski, but I'll look for it. Sounds good. I haven't seen Double Cola in a long, long time either. I don't drink colas that often any more, mainly because a couple years back, I had a tiny kidney stone, and the doctor said colas can contribute to the problem. Anybody who ever had a kidney stone knows what that pain is like, and I'd sure like to avoid another one. Sometimes, I break down and have a Coke or a Pepsi, though. Or even a R.C. Cola, which I had a couple weeks back when I was out of town. As for personal preference, it's sort of like me and pipe tobacco. I like to vary the kind of sodas I drink. Hansen's Mandarin Lime is great, Boylan's products are very good... I like root beer, birch beer, and ginger beers, and as you have noticed, some fruit sodas. Cherry Colas are a favorite, which I'm sure you already guessed because of my affinity for Cheerwine. The best ones I ever had was at soda fountains, but those have mostly disappeared from this area. At night, I drink ice water because I like it, and it's good for your body. It is good to have a neutral drink when reviewing as well. Glad to see you are a fellow soda drinker.

In regards to Ski, skip the bottles and go for the cans. The drink has bits of orange and lemon in the can (it says as much on the box) but apparently they strain it for the bottles. Has a bad effect on the bottled version.

Ski is pretty good stuff. I hadn't seen any since I lived in Bowling Green over 25 years ago and didn't even know they still made it. We just got Cheerwine up here a little while ago though. I believe my A&W 10 Root Beer is history so I picked up some Hansen's Diet Root Beer the other day. Will be giving it a try soon.

I am a bit more refined, I like club soda with mottled mint leaf...the nice thing about when you are out and about at a pcigar shop with a lounge, it is free as they assume you are a designated/ sober driver.
cleans the palate well.

Sodas.
Partial to Mexican Coke in the bottle. Really makes a difference. I guess if you need a sugar fix, better the real stuff than high fructose corn syrup.
I really drink very little if any of it anymore. Kind of bloats me which is not unusual.
There was a ginger ale made down in the Carolinas I found a number of years ago.
It was offered in two strengths.
The really hot was excellent. The brand of the soda escapes me.

Down South we like Creme of Soda, even make Homemade ice cream with it. I drink IBC Root Beer, ice water, gave up the cokes years ago as I was abuseing them and not drinking the old healthy stand by,WATER.Hot Coffee is good anytime with a pipe, less so in the Summer Months.

Cheerwine is a recent discovery for me. I wish it was sold here, retail. Might have to order it online. Maybe put 4-5 cases away. Love it. Have you guys had the Pepsi 1893? Quite nice.

Dr.Pepper with the old recipe is very good, too, when you can find it.

Club soda filtered through 1Q does it for me. I have a couple of good friends who own a craft brewery here in Colorado. We have talked about smoking some of the malt for a Stout or a Porter with tobacco added to the fire. What to use is the question. Definitely no aromatics.

Most pipe tobacco has some kind of flavoring added to it, so be aware of that. If you are thinking about a tobacco rauchbier, consider carefully. The tobacco will have to smoulder at a low temp if you want to try and capture the aroma. Perhaps aged Latakia, like this.
