I have never tried snuff and I am wondering what is the attraction? Do you get some type of buzz from using it? Some more than others, but I doubt a regular pipe smoker would notice much - especially if you smoke multiple bowls a day. The only thing about snuff that I find unpleasant (and that's even considering the sneezing etc.) is the back-drip, which is the tobacco "juice" dripping back into your stomach. For those with stomach issues like acid reflux, be careful. It's hard to avoid entirely.

There are some really strong snuffs out there and if you were looking for a Nic-Fix they would deliver.
Usually, I just like the smooth "lift" that snuff gives and the variety of scents available. (I was that kid that would sniff EVERY candle in a store.) LOL
Working in healthcare isn't conducive to smoking so it's a great alternative for me.

There are so many flavors and styles out there it's a slippery slope indeed. And all too easy to justify throwing an extra tin in the cart to get free shipping. Very much like pipe tobacco, in fact.

Awesome ... what kinds did you go for?
There's no place left in the states other than for the American Scotch style like Garrett (Swisher).
That's why there are a few of us trying to keep it alive and make "artisan snuff" available to at least a small niche crowd.
At this point I only know of a few:
OSP Snuff: ospsnuffblog.wordpress.com/blog/
Gadsden Snuff: gadsdenmill.wixsite.com/ourmill
Southwest Snuff (mine ) No website and keeping it mostly word of mouth on forums

Great selection!
Just remember to go really easy with the fine, powdery ones as they tend to fly too far back at first.
Looking forward to your reviews / thoughts and will be sending you another couple to try soon.

I like all the Wilson's I've tried, and the anise is a really nice one.

So if I am understanding this correctly you use snuff to get a nicotine buzz? How long does that last and what does it feel like. It has been so long since I felt anything from nicotine that I just don't remember it. How many times a day do you normally use the snuff. Sorry for all the questions but I am intrigued. I read about the history of snuff and it is very interesting.
People have been using it for hundreds of years so there must be something appealing to it. I stopped putting Peruvian marching powder in my nose back in the 80's so my nasal passages should be good to go.

Sadly, I have finally run out of Darin's generous viles of homemade goodies, and still find myself somewhat lost as to what to order commercially. I would want a snuff that is not flavored... all natural ...a real old style Daniel Boone recipe, like Darin's. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Sorry for the delay ... went out of town for a bit. James, looks like you've got a big start! Which ones are you liking best so far? Harris, the nicotine delivery is much different with snuff due to the alkalinity used to free-base it. Some are quite strong but it's more like a mellow hit that stays with you for awhile. I'd say on an average work day when I can't smoke I take snuff about once an hour or so. Like Baboo said, it's also the many available scents that are nice. Dan ... PM sent!

I was wondering how often you could sniff a snort, or snuff a toot, or whatever it is.
My current favorite flavor is to blend a menthol 50/50 with a non-menthol. Toque Original and Kendal Brown (Wilsons of Sharrow) is pretty good.

You don't have to worry; snuff's extremely cheap. mrsnuff.com and toquesnuff.com have 10g tins for about two bucks. Some are more, but you can search mrsnuff for sales, and ALL Toque 10g tins (from toquesnuff) are $2.13. Here are some Toque tin prices from Toque, and one of the on sale blends from mrsnuff: Yes, there's international shipping from England, but it's not that bad, say $10 or so. My point is, snuff's really cheap, and a single 10g tin will last a long time, even at one toot an hour

A lot of people love Toque, and at one point I bought about 6-8 different flavors. I didn't like any of them. I found them way too fine, and all pretty much the same.
This is not to discourage from trying them, but for anyone trying snuff for the first time there are major differences in manufacturers. So definitely get a brand selection, heavy on the Samuel Gawith, Freibourg and Trier, and Wilson's.

...always been curious about snuff, but what with my bloated TAD budget... What happened to the "budget"?? LOL ... as David said it's a very economical way to enjoy tobacco with a plethora of types to suit your personal tastes. Very fine and dry snuffs are the most difficult to master and certainly not where I would start someone. Although, my introduction was through a variety of Scotch style snuffs that should have killed me but instead brought me back for more!

Yeah, like when trailboss tried to kill me with the plastic 10g box of Gawith Original. Did not know snuff is defined as menthol or non-menthol (Gawith Original is menthol), did not know a 'pinch' is NOT the size of a pea, and didn't know to sniff gently, not try to suck the pea right through your nose-hole.
Now I like the Gawith Original, and use menthols to spice up the more flavorful, but milder snuffties, like Kendal Brown, or cobguy's Who Knows What the Hell This Is.
Still not hairy enough to do a spot of Makla snus for more than thirty seconds. It sits next to the snuffs, all taped down and locked up, mocking me.

He came at me, both barrels blazing, with some Fubar Bohica.
It took some getting used to but I use a tiny amount on a regular basis now .... Mayan Chocolate for the nose!

So, in addition to the tins, boxes and tubs of snuff from 10Furlongs and trailboss, Mark also sent me three silvery baggies marked Cobguy's, Cobguy's with some Extra, and some 70's Borkum Riff. I didn't know there was ever Borkum Riff snuff, so I opened it and it was of course a full tin of pipe tobacco, so I'm firing up a bowl in my Albany Canadian. I sense anise and toffee, with a hint of spiced vanilla and an aftertaste of yeah, I'm lying: it's mild and tobaccoey and pretty good. I'm calling it 1972 Jack Daniels. Thanks Mark

Not a bad idea to wrap electrical tape around the containers that don’t come that way. Some recommend refrigerating unopened tins, but I sent a tin of Kendal brown to Simnettpratt and the lid was rusted on. I had never refrigerated it, but that told me a moist environment might be a problem.
I am still a newbie snuffer though.

Yeah, trust me to open the tin of Kendal Brown first because it sounded tasty. It was a bitch; there's not much space between the bottom of the lid and the base's lip to wedge on, had to use the thin forward edge of a CRKT M-16 tanto, because it's a piece of liner-lock shite and is my beater knife. Tin's kinda mangled now, but I got it open, and didn't chip the knife. Thought snuff was going to be more of a problem than I thought! All good now; that was the only rusted shut tin

The only ones that I've heard need refrigeration are those made with oils that could possibly go bad such as ghee. All the sealed tins I've opened have been fine and bulks go into jars kept in the same condition as my pipe tobaccos.
