Not keeping track of time as in hours does have to mean lackadaisical folks got by just fine without time pieces for a long time. Did you notice you cant talk about time without the mention of it.

That is not altogether true, that people lacked time pieces in antiquity.
King Alfred of Wessex was known to track the hours by use of candles marked so. He had a servant come to him to announce another hour had passed away. This was the 9th Century.

I knew King Alfred, and you, Sir, are no King Alfred! I figure that Indian time is "it will be done by the time it really needs to be done" ,or I will meet you near the time of new moon at the the place where you killed the 2 deer ".

Advice on an old Swiss Army Quartz wrist watch is sought,
I replaced the battery and reset the date and time. It will not run. I have re-set the battery several times.
Anyone familiar with these?

Have you considered taking it to a watch shop or sending it back to Swiss Army?

Have you considered taking it to a watch shop or sending it back to Swiss Army? The nearest watch tech is a 275 mile round trip drive. I have a plan to visit him with my mechanical Swiss watches. He does not touch quartz watches. I am waiting for this COVID-19 thing to calm down a bit. I sent a different Swiss Army watch back to the manufacturer's service center back east. They charged $90 to examine it and inform me I needed a new watch.

That is an idea- the problem being the battery replacement itself. I have some oem batteries on order. The Duracell I installed is supposed to be the correct cross reference number but perhaps this watch wants the OEM?

Ive got an old Timex Expedition Ive had for years. When it wears out and dies, Ill get another watch. I dont know that Ive ever had 2 watches at one time. Not really a much of a jewelry man, so a watch has always just been a tool for me.

I'm surprised to say but I just don't wear a watch any more. Got my cell phone in my pocket and that's all I need. I do occasionally look at watch channels on YouTube and really entertained by these $5k or $10k mechanical dive watches. First of all, divers don't wear dive watches anymore, they use dive computers. If they have a backup its a cheap Casio. A $10k mechanical dive watch. In search of bling. If you need something to throw your money away on... there are many options surprisingly.

I have over 30 watches, and I used to wear a different one every day. Coordinated with my clothes, etc. I haven't worn one since the last Christmas party I went to. Just jewelry nowadays. I wear a Chinese ripoff of the Apple watch right now. I cracked the crystal so I eventually will pony up 25 bucks for a new one. I wore a Garmin for years, but their phone app stopped working.

That's quite a collection, Ron. The last watch I ever bought was an Apple. The first one that came out many years ago. I'm a big Apple computer fan, but the watch underwhelmed me. I found the problem to be that if the stats were to be at all meaningful you had to wear it from there moment you woke up to the moment you went to sleep, every day. I just couldn't do that. After a year it went into a drawer and never came out. After that I just didn't use a watch at all.

Yes, a cell phone is a useful time piece until there is an outage like we are having right now.

I have three wrist watches and about five pocket watches. None of them work....
I have an enormous Soviet Dive watch. It is too heavy to wear on the wrist and I have to make a strap for it out of an old belt. I bought it as a curiosity.

I talked to a buddy that his wife works in claims for American Express.
“A guy called the cops and said that his Rolex was stolen from his glovebox while he was out for a run in a preserve. The cop wrote out a report that said a Rolex was stolen from a glovebox while he was out running. They paid the claim since he had a police report. Pretty sure he got reimbursed for a free Rolex”
That is pretty crazy.

SO, I sent two of my watches off to Los Angeleeeez for repair. Dang USPS wants $48 to insure a $3,000 item. I guess they been having problems with thefts? I have lost a few valuables in transit.

The jewelry store where his father purchased to for him immediately replaced it with a new one, no questions asked. He simply had to fill out a form explaining how it was lost.

So, the word on my Nivada Depthomatic, mentioned above, from a watch shop is complete disassembly, cleaning, lubricating, parts replacement as needed including new seals and crystal, stem and crown. About $340. Not bad for a watch that old (Mid 1960s) with an ETA 2451 movement. I love the old watch and want it to run for a long time to come.
The Swiss Army "Cavalary" watch.... needs a new movement. This is the second Swiss Army Quartz watch I have which needs a new movement. I cannot recommend these watches.

It is barely a watch. I've packed up all my watches except for 8 that live on the big winder.

My watches came back from the fixers.
The Swiss Army "Cavalry" model needed a new quartz movement. $100 was not bad. I sure like the watch.
My old Nivada Depthomatic (ETA 2451 movement) was overhauled and the stem and crown replaced. Sadly, they could not find a new crystal for it and the original is cracked. Not a big deal. My diving days are behind me, LOL!
I like having a watch on my wrist and not fumbling with the blaankety blank cell phone to read the time.

Good thing about that watch is that it is an investment that could be turned into cash if I really needed it.

Inherited a few more watches from my brother...he had good taste and apparently the $$ to go with it. Something I don't have.(taste or money). This is an Aquastar Regate...has a 10 minute countdown in the 5 circles above. This is a Cartier Must De Argente...ostrich band makes it nice. This is a Cartier Twenty-4...a nod to the art deco period. This beauty I gave to my wife for our 25th Anniversary. This has become my goin out watch...which is not too often these days.
