This is something that would seem oft repeated, but I have a comparison finally. I placed two orders with P&C recently. One was out of stock items and one was in stock items. I don't like making companies pay for extra shipping, especially when I paid for none. Out of stock items are weeks old now. More importantly, I was marked "short" on several of my in stock items. Autumn Evening Bulk has been out of stock for weeks, so I placed an order with 4 Noggins. I know he is not the most popular, but has been Jake with me. Go figure, he marked me short on Autumn Evening, but shipped the rest of the order with a note he would ship AE asap. Less than two weeks later he has shipped it, while P&C is still woefully out of it. 4 Noggins is not as big as P&C. This makes me wonder if all the fantastic sales P&C has had recently (and recently stopped) were all about cash flow (which is a no-brainer). However, if they are having to sell existing stock solely to refill the 30% of their stock that's out it does not bode well.
I don't want tobacco in my rotation that I can't count on being there. So, buy more, right? Well, heck yeah, if I could order it without it getting marked out.
Is anyone else having this much of an issue with P&C or other places?
One of my solutions is to add a little burley or cav to each bowl before I light up

Honestly, I don't order much from P&C. The random items.
While I am a big believer in supporting Russ when I can, the experience with Smokingpipes.com is always so smooth and hassle free.

I rarely have problems with P&C, SP is my other site, they carry some stuff that P&C doesn’t, like 500 gram ropes of Brown Bogie.

That is a main reason I seldom order from P&C. Also rarely do I go to their web site, because whatever I want is either sold or out of stock. I have had good service from them when I buy a "Gotta Have It!" sale item(like the Big Ben bent Dublin starter kit,and three tobaccos and free shipping for one weekend,$49.99 for everything). Experience has lead me to deal with SP.com for almost all my pipe wants and needs. I've been buying pipes from Blakemar Briars(England) in shapes I really like for about the same or less that used pipes cost other places. Shipping from England does take longer. I have PADS bad!
In the mail now....

That Bulldoggie has my utmost respect and drool. Most squats are bent or canted. This one is worthy of Edward G Robinson sitting on the edge of his desk reading a newspaper with pipe in hand.

When I got my biggest bite out of the P&C apple I got their Virginia Gold and Smokers Pride for 55-60 cents an ounce. With Free Shipping I doubt there is any profit there. Selling to buy more stock is one thing. Selling at a loss and not being able to keep resupplying does not bode well. My wife worked at a place that did that and they went out of business eventually.
SP has been seamless, but P&C has more Sutliff Match Brands and a few H&H's to die for. Just wish more places would carry the match. Just the match smokers in this forum would warrant a small stock of it.
As per other thread I went to Boswell's, online, to seek out a few poofy flavors. Hopefully will see them by Thursday.

P&C was the 'Greatest Tobacco Store on Earth', until they got bought out and moved to Pennsylvania.

I've been waiting since June for some Brebbia and Solani blends I wanted to try. Pretty much resigned to the idea that I'll never see them.

I just ordered a couple pounds of Newminster blend tobaccos, and right as I clicked "purchase", I noticed the bar at the top said "free shipping on orders over $79.00... (my purchase was $65.28..normally, free shipping triggers at $99.00)I immediately called them and asked to revise the order so as to add a couple tins of Peterson's Irish flake to trigger free shipping..."sorry, it is already in the packing line" That sucks...

SP been my "go to" etailer for almost as long as it's been in existence. True....P&C does do some terrific sales here/there but nothing in their sales is something I'd want anyhow. Kudos to Sykes & Co, and sympathy to Russ, helluva good guy, looks like victim of their system. Sad.

As much as it sucks, think of this: Mostly, when you get free shipping from P&C they pay for shipping several times to complete an order. I would not be so upset that they are rigid about the order.

My one blip with SP was they sent 3 2 oz cans instead of 3 8 oz cans. They sent the right stuff immediately and let me keep the 2 oz cans.
It would almost be worth being a tobacco distributor just to make the Sutliff Match blends more accessible

I had a hiccup on one P&C order and two days after my order showed up very late, an exact duplicate of my order showed up. I'm sure it was a mistake, but I have always felt I owed them more business out of guilt. haha That being said, I have ordered from P&C several times since and have been happy with the service. SmokingPipes is my #2, especially when they have what P&C is out of, but for the most part P&C seems to have better deals. For instance, the recent deals on Dunhill tins are just too good to pass up on.

I am not really upset, but it took me about 10 minutes time to find a couple tins that I would like to increase the order with... it took that long because everything I clicked on was listed as backordered. Calling back within 15 minutes time, when the shipment hasn’t left the facility, their operation should allow a person to revise the order in that time with the only way to do so is with a phone call... I am sure that this is not all that irregular. Say....Allowing a one hour delay before it goes to the line isn’t an unreasonable suggestion.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Charlie on this one. A retailer should never balk at increasing an order, even if it means they will be dishing out $10 for free shipping.
I would have cancelled it and re-placed it with the increased items.

i would love to use P&C more, but all the things i want are frequently out of stock and STAY out of stock for weeks that to save time and frustration i tend to go to SP. I did just buy a new lighter from P&C with some sale tobacco and everything was easy-peasy and came quick. The lighter was a hit at pipe club last night, as it has a soft flame and a torch flame, and since most of the fellows there smoke cigars the idea of a one-lighter fits all was very appealing.

P&C is owned by Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG). They are till reeling from the $12 million FUBAR at Cigars International in the first quarter. Here is a statement from STG they posted on their web site for financial performance going forward.
STATEMENT BY CEO NIELS FREDERIKSEN: "I am pleased to see the steady progress in the quarter where we continued to focus on getting Cigars International back on track and on executing our strategy for the branded handmade and machine-made cigars businesses. Our branded handmade business had yet another good quarter and our machine-made cigars delivered a solid performance with full focus on improving the distribution and visibility of the reduced portfolio combined with new launches in several markets.
As part of the strategy for growing our handmade business, I am happy to announce the planned opening in 2018 of two retail stores in Texas, US. These retail stores will complement our online business and provide consumers with both a great shopping and smoking experience.
We continue to deliver a strong cash flow. In order to adjust our capital structure we are now distributing another DKK 350 million on top of the ordinary dividend distributed end of April, bringing the total cash distribution in 2017 to DKK 900 million."

2 new retail stores in Texas? (Taxes). - From N.Y. to PA. & now TX, why don't they choose a tobacco friendly state? Everything about this outfit is kittywhampus. To illustrate, when the Washington State ban went into effect, P&C stopped shipping in advance of the legal implement date. I have never forgotten how willingly they dropped me in the grease and my money has subsequently been spent (and appreciated) elsewhere.

Mike, that's the problem when a company jets lawyers decide commercial policy. I've had that discussion with them many times. A very skittish outfit.

I have sung the praises of P&C for quite awhile, I believe in giving recognition when it is deserved, and criticism when it is earned. 6 days to respond..... I wasn't asking for free tobacco, or free shipping, I would just be happy to hear that they are considering addressing the issue.

They are NOT doing well regardless of what anyone who is a supporter out there on the pipe forums is saying. They've been going under for the better part of the past two years. When is the only indeterminate. I order everything from SP who offer great customer service and who are growing, not going bankrupt and obfuscating the facts. @charlie: I had a really similar issue with P&C a couple years ago. Ordered almost 2 pounds of tobacco and maybe an accessory or two, and noticed RIGHT as I placed the order that the address had been my old one on my account and it didn't prompt me to change address, so I didn't think to change it from within my P&C account. I figure no big deal, I'll give them an email and start calling them to change the address. I email. Get the autoresponse. Wait about 20 minutes and email again, and say im starting to call you guys for support as well. Get an email back within plenty of time to change the order about,.. maybe an hour later. Guy says It's already went out for shipping, nothing we can do about it now. Try contacting the person that lives at your old address." That's what he told me, then I got the confirmation that they shipped the package out of their warehouse something close to 24 hours later. So, it was not even BOXED up yet to ship, let alone shipped. Granted, I had the wrong address, but with similar issues with SmokingPIpes I can LITERALLY be talking to someone anytime in mere minutes and the support is phenomenal.

I gave up on P&C and now SP is my supplier. I don't buy much, but when I do, I expect what I got from SP: GREAT service. They called to confirm my address on a TWO tin order and shipped it instantaneously. And, I got my Bengal Slices!
I will watch the forums for better news before I place another order with P&C. Sad...

Last order I placed with P&C was half marked out on IN STOCK items. I had placed another order of backorder items so they wouldn't have to keep piecemeal shipping at their expense.
I cannot count they money they could have made off me just by keeping their own brands in stock better.
Fast Forward Today: I placed an order with P&C. No issues with what I ordered, but rather than pay an IN STOCK price on Butternut Burley I ordered two pounds from 4 Noggins. When P&C gets an item back in stock it seems forever that they put the sliding scale on prices. In other words, 3.50 for one ounce. 3.50 for 32 Ounces. I saved 20$ on THEIR product at another store. I now have my cellar where I want it, so this will be a last hurrah with P&C for a while. Not out of anger. Just trying to keep my grey matter intact

I tried to order through P&C a few months ago. They screwed it up. I went to SP and see no reason to change.
