We visited my hometown, the Houston Heights. It has changed a lot over the years, but it's still a great place. We had lunch at Carter and Cooley deli. It is named for a couple of famous Heights residents, and located in the old Wards Drugstore building. When I was 4, my brother was 14 and he delivered drugs on his bicycle and ran the soda fountain. They had toys upstairs and I was there every chance I had. Around the corner the old butcher shop is on it's 10th iteration as an art gallery/antique shop. We poked around for a while and chatted with the very sweet German gentleman who was holding his 21 year old Corgi. I was looking for some small cups for Greek coffee. I had seen several sets that were expensive, but I told him what I was looking for and he said "I have just the thing"! He went to the back of the shop and dug into the back of a cabinet, and produced a set of 24ct gold Neiman Marcus demitasse cups and saucers. $14.50. We stopped by a frozen yogurt store by the old, historically protected water tank and had watermelon sorbet and Nutella frozen yogurt. Then to Buchanan's nursery, the only place it town that had TAM jalapeno plants. Wife and I bought a few discounted plants and got out for only $35. Trust me, that's a feat in this place, which has $895 flower pots. Home to a two hour nap. A nearly perfect day. it does sound like a good one. I love days like that. In fact, best days for me are the unplanned ones... The ones you end up going somewhere on a whim and have a blast. Haven't had one of those for a while. Maybe in the next month I might.

@10furlongs I think it's good that you are taking a semi-aggressive way to training Thor. Most of our mistakes with dogs were treating them like babies till they were 15 years old. Can't change out habits this late.
As to California Racing, I have to wonder if any tracks are within smoke smelling distance of the fires and if the smell alone might spook some horses.
Xuan and I served on Jury Duty many times. I was in a sequestered jury on a murder trial for ten days. Weird feeling. Obviously I can't serve now, and Xuan was serving petite and grand juries almost every year until they took her off the list for needing to be here with me

In fact, best days for me are the unplanned ones... The ones you end up going somewhere on a whim and have a blast. Haven't had one of those for a while. Maybe in the next month I might. One thing I like about St Louis is that there is still enough of the "old" that keeps getting re-used over and over again. We're also near so many small towns for antiquing and dining. We are always tops in murder rates, but it is not as bad as it seems. Most cities are part of a county, and the county helps lower their numbers. St. Louis, besides Washington DC, is the only city that is not part of a county. It's its own entity. Thus, our murder rate has few upper class areas to bring the rate down. SF is similar. It's the only city that is its county. The city and county borders are the same. Anyway, I feel very fortunate to have lived in friendlier times (in the outside world) and to have found friendly times here

Found out last night that my wife's best friends daughter was in a car accident in San Antonio. Very serious injuries and her treatment is compromised because she is going through DTs. Over thirty broken bones, bruised lungs and heart. Please pray for Audrey. She will be 30 next month.

I don't do prayers, but I'll send all my best wishes for a speedy recovery her way. They work just as well.

Thoughts and prayers for Audrey. Terrible situation to be in.
Slow day starting with thunder storms...our sweet MissElli was cuddled up to me and my wife...she hates thunder and with her epilepsy we are always afraid of a seizure. She is too cute to have problems, but we are there for her 24/7...never leave her alone.

It's a neat forum to be able to say we pray, yet those who don't give their wishes and we all understand. When people start threads about how great this club is, this is my biggest appreciation.

Thanks for the prayers and good wishes for Audrey. They got her into a back brace and are hoping to not have to fuse her spine. If she lays off the sauce she can completely heal. Her kidneys are bruised and not working but they think it's temporary. Had to put in a chest tube. She will be bedridden for at least 10 weeks, so we are hoping that it will double as a recovery from the substance abuse. The driver of the car she was in wasn't drinking. It was sideswiped by a drunk driver who knocked it into the concrete barrier and across the fast lane, where a loaded semi hit it at over 70 mph. The guys are out of the hospital. Bad way to start a marriage.

Question for the Chroniclers I have probably fifteen tins of items I have not tried yet, most with 6 months to 1 year on. They are some of the more exotic choices, I think. Hal o the Wynd, C&D Strathspey, Bagpiper's Dream, a few of the C&D "Drive" blends, a couple tins of Dobie (STP - New production), and some I probably forgot I have. Now the question, which Chroniclers are smart enough to already figure: Should I go ahead and just open them, not regarding the amount of open tins I already have? Thoughts: I really want to try many of them. I can keep them moist with wax paper under the tin lid. I don't think I have ten years left in me to think about letting them age that long, and I feel a year is not bad. I don't have a lot of reasons to not open them, save that I have more open tins. That might be a blessing as it gives me many more to draw a bowl from each day. In the way of Hal o the Wynd, like some GLP blends, I bought this because don was smoking it. Wolfman had been going to town on GLP for quite a while and those were enjoyable smokes. I feel I could get some joy out of Hal, knowing that one of my buds here was enjoying it. You guys getting my drift?

You only live once brother, and c&d blends definitely change a ton after a mere year in the tin. They tin and sell really young blends most of the marrying hasn't happened before they ship. Hal o the wynd is fantastic by my taste buds, I have a young tin I'm smoking out of myself.
On a completely different note, I adopted a new to me knothead. Hes a 1.5 yo pit thats gentle and crazy. We've been working together to help him learn limits and not bullying his smaller older sisters. He's a knothead because he's damn stubborn. Good gentle hearted boy that had to be rehomed because of his breed.

Good gentle hearted boy that had to be rehomed because of his breed. Way cool on the pit. We had a lab/pit, a pit/pit, and now another pit/pit. The doubles on the pit means they are different pits mixed. I miss Willy, whom we lost last December, at 3 yo. He was extremely active, though, and I had the scratch marks to prove it. Bully the Lionhearted came here at 5 yo in December. He's a lazy turd with his paws planted on my arse as I type. Perfect speed for us. Pits are often totally cool with people, but not other dogs. Bully is that way. No matter. He has his own yard to read the newspaper while taking his constitutional.
