I use a Dexter Russell Diamond Dust 12" sharpening stick. Puts an amazing edge on all my knives particularly the ones I use for cutting plugs and twists....also great in the Kitchen. What do you Use?

If I was home I'd take a pic. I have a 12" sharpening stone that's about 50 years old in a wood block case

I took my dad's sharpening grinder. It has a stone and a leather wheel too. It's made by tormek. Works well for me.

I use two different grits of wet stones and finish of the edge with super fine ceramic sticks. Just did my Ulu knife last week. It’s shaving sharp, easily slices thru flake and plug tobacco’s 👍

I’ve used and recommended Tormek paste as well, puts a nice shine on the edge of a knife as well as a razor sharp edge when used with a leather strop. Tormek makes some fine products, highly recommended 👍

If and when my plug knife needs sharpening I plan to send it to you and let you have a go. My knife sharpening skills are rather dull. (Pun intended!) AJ

Happy to accommodate you. "My knife sharpening skills are rather dull. (Pun intended!)" That's OK...my eyes aren't what they used to be either...but we'll muddle through.

There is an old man at the farmers market that keeps my knives in pretty good shape and in-between visits to him I just ceramic rod them.

Just to jump in, if you haven’t heard of them, I have a Tomz knife sharpener. It is a repurposed old massager, using slow moving diamond wheels. Has a few accessories, great idea. You can find videos on YouTube, keeps my knives, razors, gouges sharp as hell.

Ceramic is good...but in my opinion having used both, the diamond just really does the trick.
Anybody (you serious knife collectors) know what I can use on stones besides honing oil? Perhaps, water?

I also use the Lansky knife system, I always use diamond stones then finish with a 4000 grit ultra fine ceramic stone. Gives a mirror polish to a knifes edge👍

Can you use water as a lubricant when using stones?

Not specifically a plug knife, but I usually sharpen things on the bottom lip of a ceramic plate, and then a honing rod. I've even used the top edge of my car window.

The top edge ^^^^^^^^ of a car window is an old easy trick....good on you! Came in handy once during hunting season back in the mid 80’s with my skinning knife that I loaned to a friend, I never made that mistake again.👍

" with my skinning knife that I loaned to a friend," Yeah, no one and I mean no one touches my knives. If you don't know enough to have one with you, you don't deserve to use one. period. I've got 2 Damascus kitchen knives that were made for me...both scary sharp..scares even me, cause I've been cut by them (an opps)...but my wife knows not to touch them. I told her they will bite you because you are scared of them...good.

Back in the late 70’s while living in Georgia I went hunting for wild boar, they are “ nasty sob’s “ , so besides my 30/30 I decided to carry one of my 1911’s on my belt and a small 380 on my ankle holster. A hunting buddy asked “ you mind if I carry your 380 “? I told him straight out “ anyone that has the responsibility and license to carry a pistol would never lend a pistol to a friend or a family member, it ain’t happening “!! He was ticked off, but ask me if I care. For all I know he could have been a prior convicted felon!

For several years, I have vbeen using the Spyderco Triangle set. But since the family reunion that I took it to, I cannot find it...didn't want to replace it in case it popped up, but my son bought me a wrok sharp combo. Much faster and not as much of a pain in the arse to sharpen knives...works perfectly for my uses.

Plus, I’d lose my Federal carry license if the person has a prior felony record.

Trailboss, am I looking at a motorized sanding belt in the picture? You can put about most any kind of edge if you have a belt sander with a 1.5"-2.5" belt on it. And it looks like a ceramic rod for cleaning up the blade after.

Walt, what trailboss pictured is a small electric belt sander, been on the market for a number of years. Excellent reviews plus stellar results with a little patience. They are worth the money, especially if you don’t know how to properly use regular or wet stones.👍

Thanks, Ted. Got stones but this looks like a good alternative. Been a while since I ground some steel.
