I can't say much more than has already been said. For me, I think if you're spending $200 on a pipe it shouldn't have simple qc errors like that one. You're right in sending it back. However, while I would love to recommend a mm legend or county gentleman, from what I can pick up, your new lifestyle might lend itself to the 1 pipe. I knew many folk who smoked out of one pipe day and daily. So if you're going to have one pipe, It'd better look good and smoke good too. I hope you find it and stay around here. I think you've already seen what kind of place this is. And it took great humility to do what Cramptholomew did, but that's the kind of place this is. While you're moving around you might find a home in the briar patch.

What ballpark price wise were they back then, Dave? Holt's of Philadelphia, who where a Peterson Retailer, sold the rustic Petes for $30.00. I alway liked them or the sandblasts as their smooths left a bit to be desired. A system Pete for $30? That's incredible. The price was double that around the late 90's when I got into pipe-smoking. The System Petes around then were already $60-$70. If they pretty-much doubled in price from 1988-1998, maybe I won't feel so bad that they've jumped less than $50 in the 20 yrs since. The cost of production in today's market has to make profitability much harder to obtain than it was 30 yrs ago.

I know I'm late to the game but I'll chime in. Contact SP support. They are great to work with and they have either credited me or sent me a replacement on the occasions I have received bad inventory (I order a lot from them). Looking at your pipe pictured though the issues don't seem that bad. The misalignment can be easily fixed when removing the stem and those scratches are nothing compared to about a months worth of use. However, I do understand the principal of the matter. You paid for a brand new pipe and it should be in excellent working condition.
I have no doubt SP will issue you a full refund.

Well, I tried purchasing a $200 pipe (on sale from $400) from Savinelli from SmokingPipes.com again...and they have failed me once more. I'm sorry everyone, but I don't see what you all see in them. I purchased this pipe: www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/savinelli/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=260223It arrived with either right bias in the stem or the logo's was misaligned in relation to the stem's orientation (I'm not sure what the best technical "pipe" description would be). Again, if it's a $50 pipe, no problem. If it's a $400 pipe I expect better. I contacted support and was told that "When purchasing factory pipes in the $100-$200 dollar range, the attention to detail each pipe receives is unfortunately less than say going up to a $300-$400 pipe." She obviously just saw the sale price and didn't see it was an actual $400 pipe. At this point I feel like I'm being treated like I'm stupid by SmokingPipes.com. I'm returning this pipe and moving on. I'm sorry guys, but the pipe industry has some serious quality control problems.

I’ve purchased new pipes for $30.00 that smoke as good if not better then some of my high riced pipes. Which proves....the price of a pipe means absolutely nothing!!

Those are fairly minor flaws/issues for an estate pipe or maybe a $100 pipe. But for a new $200 pipe you should be getting something fine and nearly flawless. I know some would consider that a mid-range amount to spend on a pipe, for me it's high-end. If I'm going to treat myself, I want it to be as near-perfect as it can be. If that is indeed rust, that's no good. SP's customer service is stellar, so I'm sure they'll refund or replace. They also just bought Peterson, and I'm sure they want to make a good start to that association. Exactly. I'd roll with it if I only paid $50. They said regarding the off-center mouthpiece that "this is common in Peterson pipes. The stems can have the tendency to be a little biased, its often called pipe makers bias.". Regarding the scratches they said "This is in fact a new pipe and it is not uncommon for a few scratches to appear on the silver accents.". Regarding the rust, they said it was normal. Sadly, this pipe isn't sold anywhere else and they have no more left, and I'm not gonna settle for another after I spent days finding this one. If they don't offer me a discount on this piece I'm returning it and not getting into the hobby. ...would hate to see you give up the hobby over one sub-par pipe...

I have several pipes with this type of stem, and none of them have the logo aligned as well as this one. G-d this is a beautiful pipe! I don't think "Logo Alignment" is one of the qualities that anyone looks for. This is going to be the best pipe somebody has ever smoked.

I received this: "Devin, I am sorry for the inconvenience, but I have spoken with my manager about your request to receive 50% off on this pipe and unfortunately, we are not going to be able to offer you 50% off on this pipe. You are more than welcome to send the order back and I will send you a return label for the contents in that order. Please let me know so I can get the return label sent out to you right away?" I'm returning my entire order, tobacco and all. I spent a couple days searching for the perfect pipe and I'm not going through that again. By the way, DON'T BUY THE PETERSON SPIGOT WALNUT 120FT from smokingpipes.com. If you do, you're getting this one I'm returning. If I see it and the price is right, it's mine.

Perfection only comes from those who are seeking to attain it. Buying from a factory your going to get good enough to sell pipes. The other thing to consider is getting away from a pipe that needs to be timed correctly. Going to a Gubileo d Oro from Savinelli would get you a hand made pipe that everything is absolutely perfect on, because its their top of the line pipe and gets that level of attention.

And here I am grabbing for one of my cobs 9 times out of 10.
I think it's a beautiful pipe. Especially for the price.

If your only issue now is logo alignment and the pipe is a good smoker....keep it. The logo being off just a bit will not affect the pipes performance!! It’s a keeper👌👍👍
PS YOUR ASKING TO MUCH FROM A PRODUCTION LINE PIPE

If the logo is misaligned, knock the price down (unless, in this case the pipe was actually a $600 pipe but discounted because of the misalignment - but that should have been stated on the website...unless the discount from $400 to $200 was because of the logo alignment). After all that, if the pipe smokes well then that's the main thing...but I would still be annoyed if, after spending $200 ($400) on a pipe it wasn't aesthetically perfect.

I’d be very annoyed as well, believe me! But, I would never spend $400.00 on ANY production line pipe!! I’ve never spent over $150.00 on a production line pipe!! Just ordered a Morgan Bones Poker pipe with a slight bend to the stem, cost $39.99. That pipe will arrive perfect and be an outstanding smoker. All Morgan Pipes receive great reviews, look at some YouTube videos. I agree with your discount theory👍

I asked if there was any discount I could get, turns out smokingpipes doesn’t consider this a defect lol
“I apologize for the frustration, I completely understand but the logo being a little bit misaligned is not uncommon with factory pipes, so we don't consider it a defect. Unfortunately, we are not able to discount the pipe any further.”
Happy smoking guys. It was fun while it lasted...

Why dont you just go to a local tobacco shop and buy one in person ?
That way you can be sure it's exactly what you are looking for.

But the logo is misaligned by about 20 degrees. At $400, no beuno.

@. $400.00 I’d send it back as well. At that price it should have been perfect! Get yourself a Savinelli unfinished or a Morgan Bones series pipe new from $25.00 to $39.99... you won’t be disappointed 👍👍
Personally, I’d never spend $400.00 on any pipe...especially your a fairly new pipe smoker.
I wish you better luck with your next new briar....just don’t break the bank, it’s not necessary.

A misaligned logo is not a flaw on a spigot pipe. Period.

. "...... I'm sorry guys, but the pipe industry has some serious quality control problems." Welcome to he world of pipe smoking. It's never been an exact science and never will be. Sorry it doesn't meet your expectations but I've had worse at similar prices happen to me and the smoking qualities far out numbered the visual aspects.
