Hello everyone. Brand new to pipe smoking. And I'll admit, having a hard time with this hobby. My first try with the pipe was absolutely horrible. I went to the local smoke shop, bought a cheap corncob and some cheaper tobacco, went home and burnt the hell out of my tongue. After that, I didn't go back to it for about 2 months.
My grandfather used to smoke a pipe. I always remembered the smell while he sat on the deck rocking in his old rocking chair. I was too young to understand the whole process. Fast forward to today, I've spent a lot of time researching and reading threads because I really want to enjoy this just like my grandpa did.
So, I went out and got better equipment and tobacco. No more smoke shop crap. Still haven't got it down yet though. Still having issues figuring out the proper way to pack the pipe so I don't have to relight 500 times. I feel I've got a good draw technique down and I'm leaning to taste the tobacco. Every time I relight though, it tastes like I licked an ashtray and it kinda ruins it for me after that. I know not to get it too hot but, anytime I relight it just kills it for me.
Anyway, I'm not giving up. Still learning, still researching. Happy to be a part of this forum. I know I'll get some great advise here that will help me to enjoy this like grandpa did.
Cheers boys!

Welcome, and stick with it. Someone once told me that it takes about 1 year to learn how to smoke a pipe. I think he was right.

Welcome aboard! What pipes and tobaccos are you using now? Which packing method?

Welcome if your local to some of the fellars around it might help to have a sit down with a few of the old curmudgeons. If your local enough to columbus,oh kansas city mo, richmond va those are the next 3 pipe shows. Best advice I've seen is pack lighter than you think you should and draw smaller than you think you need to.

Thanks Gents. Right now I've got a couple of briars and a corncob from MM. The tobacco I keep going back to is Lane 1Q and Captian Black original. When I pack I use the three layer method and I've also tried the method where you put the tobacco in your palm, place the bowl upside down on top of tobacco and then move it around in a circle. This method has actually produced a couple of great smokes but, I'm super inconsistent with it.
Oh and, I'm in Northern California near Lake Tahoe. Not sure if anyone on here is from the area.

There's the key ... practice, practice, practice. Consistency will develop in time.
Also, you may want to try some different tobacco choices that aren't so heavily topped with sugars and humectants, IMHO.

It appears that the closest pipe club is in Sacramento... if you go down the hill and the schedule matches up, it might be worthwhile...there is nothing like hands on advice. www.unitedpipeclubs.org/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=90797&module_id=196858On packing, one of the things I found that helped me is that in a properly packed bowl the resistance on the draw will be similar to drawing milk through a straw. If it is packed too tight on the draw, it can sometimes be remedied with a pipe cleaner pushed through to the bottom of the bowl, a small piece of tobacco can restrict the airway mimicking a too tightly packed bowl.

I'm very open to any suggestions that you guys have when it comes to tobacco Tobacco choices are very subjective, I would recommend buying a couple of ounces of many different blends it sounds less ke you have only dabbled in aromatics, there is a whole ‘nother way to travel on Tobacco Road. Do you live close to Reno? If so, scroll down to Nevada, and you might want to contact that tobacconist. thebriarpatchforum.com/page/pipe-club-directory#am.yelp.com/biz/rancho-maduro-cigars-reno

I was in a similar boat to you but forums have been my saviour. The people in this place are great and will keep you on point.
I'd keep to the cob while you're learning as they are much more forgiving than briar (imo).
Anyway, welcome to the patch. It's good to have you here.

Welcome from South Georgia! You've found the right place to get some pointers and learn a thing or 2.
You're in my sisters neck of the woods, although, she doesn't smoke a pipe. Moving up there has crossed my mind a lot lately.
I'd try some different tobaccos and see which you like best. I started not awfully long ago and thought I'd only like aros. I was wrong. I smoke them to fill out my rotation through the day, but I prefer non aromatics by far.
How long do you let your tobacco dry before filling your pipe? With relighting problems I'm assuming it's either in the moisture or the packing. It's more of a trial and error thing and patience is key.
I'm still wet behind the ears so that's only my 2 cents.

Thank you all very much for the warm reception. I can already see that this is going to pay off for me. If anyone has any good recommendations on some non-aros, I'm all ears. I do tend to like sweet and flavorful which is why I started off with aros. I also know that they burn hot and are kinda hard to manage. All of my tobacco is stored in mason jars right now and, I have started taking some out of the jar and letting it sit for about 20min before I pack and smoke it.

Greetings and Welcome from Washington State. If you haven't yet, try some Carter Hall. Easy to keep lighted and not a blend that bites.

Not knowing what aromatics that you currently have jarred, and in addition to the Carter Hall mentioned above, I would throw-in a pouch of Amphora Original. You should be able to purchase both over the counter (OTC) at your local Brick and Mortor (B&M), or, possibly, maybe, one of those "smoke shops" that carry a variety of smoking items, accessories, and hookah's

One thing I have to say is DO NOT skip around from blend to blend without taking the time to LEARN what your smoking does. Pick one to three at the most and smoke at least a tin or two of each before trying another blend. You've got your whole life to learn so take your time. EASY, PEASY

Carter Hall (this is stuff is fantastic, and CHEAP!), another OTC I like is Sir Walter Raleigh. That said, maybe some Sutliff Match Ready Rubbed, and definitely some Peter Stokkebye Natural Dutch Cavendish. All those are nice, mild, and smooth.

He's an Oregonian now and gone native.
