I was a newbie before I went to boot camp slightly over 50 years ago. Little over a year later I lost my pipe (a no-name) in the jungle somewhere. Got back to the world a bit over a year later and bought my first great pipe, a Jarl. Bless the USMC PX system for for stocking Jarls. Been learning ever since.

I would consider myself a noob. I’ve smoked on and off since high school (circa 1973), but never more than a month or so at a time. I never really learned how to properly pack a pipe, or what a good pipe was like. It wasn’t until I found the Patch (about a month ago) have I learned how this pipe smoking really works. PS. I bought a pipe, now lost, sometime in the late 70’s or early 80’s, that was aluminum. Bowl was briar and it had a short mouth piece, but the rest was aluminum. It was pretty cute, and I wish I still had it to see if it was any good. When I had it I didn’t really have a clue, but I think I remember it biting my tongue off.🔥 Do any of the veterans remember this line of pipes? I’ll try to find a picture. I just checked in on this thread, because i knew by the title that it didn't pertain to me....my mind immediately went to the Kirsten as I read the thread. There was a pretty aggressive marketing campaign in the mid to late 70's touting it as the coolest smoking pipe on the market. I yearned for one at the time, but weed costing 10-15 dollars per ounce at the time was a higher priority...economically and physically. but the Department Of Transportation realigned my priorities...plus, I started a family.

I'm not a noobie in the sense I smoked for many years, years ago. My wife actually recently encouraged the reunion. I never smoked cigarettes. I do not inhale. And I don't rely on the nicotine. As it's been three days since I smoked last.Tonight I'm going to be observing with my telescope and frequently enjoy a pipe when I do so. But I started smoking again in the last few months.

Smoked pipe (and cigar) on and off for a long long time, but only took it seriously as a hobby recently.

Smoked pipe (and cigar) on and off for a long long time, but only took it seriously as a hobby recently. Same here Jeff. I started smoking cigars and pipes back in the summer of 1982. Over the years I've definitely smoked cigars the most, only smoking a pipe a few times a year. Finally got serious about the activity less than 2 years ago, only having 1 pipe and 1 pouch of tobacco at the time. At last count I've probably got close to 100 pipes, mostly estates that I've refurbed, and upwards of about 90 lbs of tobacco or so. I know... I KNOW! I have a problem. :-( ;-)

I am where you are at...I didn't smoke my pipe on Saturday, or Sunday...no Jonesin for a smoke. Some pipe smokers admit to the addiction, but it is far different than cigarette smoking...I wish the cigar and pipe smokers would get a fair shake on the issue...regardless, even if it was addicting it is none of anyone else's business...it certainly isn't in the impairment realm.

Kirsten pipes are still being made in Washington state, not by the same people but as much attention to detail as one would want and so many new innovations as well, they smoke well, will post some of mine soon, Google them, regards. banjo That is good to know. Thanks!

I pitch in near every day here. Always do my best to greet/welcome everybody classed as a newbie. If I happen to miss somebody....apologies in advance. I'm a true "oldie", almost a charter member of this site, go back to original ASP since '01 + a few other places that probably don't exist anymore. This is, no doubt from many, the best of the best on the subject I define true "oldie" as......12/29/40. If anybody can beat that, I be glad to lose my "seniority"!

Pack a day Marlboro Man for 25 years except for service years when I dipped Copenhagen. I was in the field more often than not, Cope was easier to carry and a lot better than Jonsing for a smoke after they got soaked. I’ve been on the pipe full time since 2002/2003ish, something like that.
My lungs feel better now than fifteen years ago and my house doesn’t stink anymore even though I smoke freely indoors. I came home this weekend after being away all last week and all I smelled when opening the door was that of fresh paint despite smoking my pipe in here since the first week of April.

How come it doesn't have the same effect?

That's cool. How come it doesn't have the same effect? Just a guess but I believe there are fewer chemicals and burning agents utilized in processing pipe tobacco. It's likely a life long non-smoker would be more sensitive to the smells than a life long smoker such as myself but I can definitely tell a difference from my cigarette days.

Interesting pipe. I found out mine was a Kristen. Does it smoke well? Fly, my son Nick says it smokes great. I'm sure the fact that he loves the look has nothing to do with it. ;-P That pipe reminds me of the Medico Ventilator. The only difference is the Ventilator has slots instead of the holes. Not a bad smoke, down side there must be a filter in place to smoke.

Pulled my old pipes out in mid-July after a 30+ year hiatus; smoked cigars in the interim. There are so many more tobacco choices now, or maybe it’s just the internet effect. All I know is it all seems much more relaxing these days.
