Hello! I'm the epitome of a noob, I'm still within my first month of pipe smoking, got my first pipe and tobacco during tobaccopipe's black friday sale. So far enjoyed 1Q, Prince Albert, and Luxury Bullseye Flake. Within these past 2 weeks, I've also got my girlfriend into smoking some pipe tobacco with me. We stopped by our local tobacconist in CA (Ole Town Havana) and picked up some aromatics for her. Two nights ago, she was getting some niccotine cravings so we searched around our local area and found a nice small shop. Picked up a tin of Dunhill Royal Yacht. Been enjoying that since! The nice tobacconist threw in a MM mini cob for us and I've been using it for a work pipe now for short breaks. Can't wait to expand my cellar and learn about the different characteristics of leaves and cuts. Enjoying it all very much so far! Looking forward to learning from you all... Welcome to the patch. And good job on getting your girlfriend into the hobby too. Not many can do that.

I gotta make sure not to mess it up!

You want to talk about Noobs, let me dazzle you with my noobulousness with a very brief journey… My Grandaddy’s old pipe rack has been with me since he passed many years ago and sits on my desk to this day. Many people say I am a carbon-copy of him but it never occurred to me to smoke a pipe, even with his old ones staring at me. Several weeks ago I decided that I should follow in his footsteps, and went immediately into an unexpectedly full obsession mode, spending every night researching pipes on the internet. I bought a Savinelli 614 for no other reason than it looks cool. Then just last Thursday I discovered this site! What a great place and I am glad to be here. Saw some recommendations that smoking pipes dot com is a great place so I started ordering more stuff from there. A Peterson 312 from there will be here on Friday. My first smoke was this weekend out of the Savinelli with some drugstore Captain Black. Very fun! I had what imagine folks call ‘gurgling’ but that was probably because I was walking around in the woods fiddling with stuff rather than just chilling out and smoking my pipe. Though I did notice (after I purchased) that Savinelli recommends this pipe for “experts,” what do ya’ll think that is all about? I’m sort of focused on these Peterson pipes because we have family in Ireland and will be back in Dublin this June. Looks like their store is right across from Trinity College so I’ll be making a beeline after we touch down. Now I need to get me some decent tobacco. I think I’ve read 14,000 reviews on smoking pipes this weekend alone. Really looking forward to this hobby and trying some new flavors. I’ll be smoking a pipe under a tree while squirrel hunting with my son after Christmas, and enjoying one while pompano fishing off the beach after that. Then ultimately this summer I hope to have one on St. Stephen’s Green in Dublin near the Oscar Wilde statue (since somebody stole his). Lastly - if anyone is near Melbourne FL let me know and we can meet for a smoke at the Executive Lounge, they just opened up a cigar/pipe bar…

Now a few decades back of you asked “How many Doobie Smokers?”, we might have crashed the server.
I just did the math, it has been 35 years

Longtom, It looks like you are well on your way to the craziness we call the pipe hobby. The Peterson that you have on order looks like it has the P-Lip stem....it seems that either you love them or hate them, so if the pipe doesn't suit you don't write off Petersons. thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/5346/peterson-lipPeterson has had a great history, but recent years that have had some real quality control issues, which I think are going to be addressed by the current owners (Laudisi Group) By the time you get to Ireland, and if you can talk to the folk in Dublin or Sallynoggin, I think that they will help you find the perfect pipe that has no issues.

Thanks for the heads up. I did read those threads and decided to pull the trigger anyway for 3 reasons: 1 - I am sort of intrigued by the p-lip, 2 - I have been sort of obsessed with Ireland after visiting my in laws and spending time there, 3 - I figure when it comes to pipes I don't know my a$$ from a hole in the ground in the first place (and thus wouldn't even notice any QC issues).
I've only got two places on my itinerary in Dublin this time around: Peterson's pipe shop and Kevin & Howlin's tweed shop...

Are you in Dublin? That would be awesome! We won't be there long - land in Dublin in the morning, train to Cork the following afternoon - but I'm sure I can get a pass from the wife if you're in town.

I'm up north so might be difficult. The guys in the peterson shop are really nice people. They don't sell their own tobacco there, but any they do is extortionate.

I first picked up a pipe in May, 2018 having previously been an occasional cigar smoker.

Been smoking pipes 40+ yrs. but , still feel like a 'newb' / noob ... Especially after researching {all things pipe / tobac. } & realizing there was so much I never knew {cuts / blends / types / tools , etc.} ... Tamper ? I never used a tamper till recently .
This is the 1st / only pipe forum I've joined {best I found} ... CPS runs a close 2nd though .
Still always learning ...
