Trying out some Meze 11 neo ear buds 30bucks just for fun. I don’t really keep up with headphones and earbuds since I can barely wear them, but I know Meze has a great reputation.

To be honest I can't remember the last time I wore a IEM so we are just looking to see what we might be missing or just messing around..

How are they sounding?

They sound good but I fatigue pretty fast with them even though I they came with a assortment of ear tips that have not tried yet. The sound stage all but disappears. Titanium driver might need more burn in. Build quality is top notch way better than cheaper IEMs out there.

And none of the supplied tips ever seem to quite fit. I guess I've got tweener ear canals.

Right ear fits good but the left is off with the preinstalled set I did order a extension 3.5 cable as I think the length is for wearing rather than a desk set up like mine.

I've got old ears and I have only ever one set of buds that I can endure, and off brand Chinese that were immediately discontinued. I would like to know who was selling the Meze for $30 instead of $700.

Just ordered a new set of tubes for my Freya S+. They're RCA 6SN7's. They should be an improvement over the JJ tubes it came with and hopefully will last longer. I wasn't thrilled with how quickly these developed a channel imbalance.

I remember the days when you could go into the store and pick from a huge selection of tubes, usually 3 or 4 different brands of each. They has machines to test the tubes and you could take them out of the box and test them yourself to get a matched pair. The last time I priced a matched pair of Russian tubes, I decided to just go solid state. Honestly, for the music I listen to, I don't notice a difference. With the LaScalas I could tell, but it didn't bother me either way. I really think that solid state has come a long way.

You can still get inexpensive tubes (like those JJ's), but the good, NOS ones are definitely not in that category.
I wouldn't have bothered with tubes, either, if a bunch of Tannoy owners hadn't kept telling me how much those speakers love tubes. Once I tried it, could I tell a difference? Yeah, surprisingly, I could. Is it worth the extra fuss and cost? Meh. Depends on the person.

I could tell a difference on the Klipsch, but was it better? That I couldn't say. And it wasn't really about the money, but the hassle.

At one time I had a full Sherwood tube set up and it was more trouble than I thought it was worth. Replaced with Sherwood Newcastle all solid state.

The place I ordered the tubes from is actually right here in Memphis, as it turns out. Got a shipping notification Sunday night, but USPS still doesn't have the package. I hate it when sites do this -- print the label just so they can say it shipped. Shady practice.

And today, they arrived, with USPS still showing they haven't received the package yet. Gotta love the USPS.
The Freya takes 4 tubes: 2 gain stage, 2 buffer (cathode followers). I'm going to start by trying replacing just the gain stage tubes. That should take care of the channel imbalance. If it does, and I'm happy with the sound with the original JJ tubes still in the buffer circuit, that leaves me the other 2 RCA tubes to use when these 2 burn out.

Audiophiles? Don’t I wish. My hearing simply won’t allow it. But long ago, before the ears went, I worked at a small documentary/TV commercial film studio. We used a Nagra for location sound. Made like a Swiss watch. Not surprising since it was made in Switzerland. I played with it a lot. I was on the camera end and we had two sound guys so I never got to do location sound. But I would borrow it on weekends. I always had a secret desire to be a foley artist. Much later I had two Sony reel-to-reels that provided me with much silly fun. (While I messed with these I discovered how the Wookie growls were made. Drag a tall wooden stool across a concrete floor and record at 7.5ips. Play-back and transfer at 3-3/4ips. Done!) Anyway I never managed to become a foley guy, but I still have a fascination with sound— if I could only hear it.😜

Crazy expensive, though.

For the first time since I bought them, I've taken the Maggies out of the system and gone back to the Tannoys. Wow. For all the immediacy and detail the Maggies give you, the richness and palpability of the Tannoys is stunning. I will very happily go back and forth between these 2 sets of speakers over the years. (Which will be no sweat, given the ease of moving the Maggies.)
I know that all sounds like audiophile bs, but I'm really not kidding.
