Today was my first time going into one.I was really impressed. The place was very clean and organized.Just about anything you could need in sport equipment or clothes..People who knew their stuff there to help you.It reminded me of the way stores used to be run..I enjoyed my visit there.

Larry Dicks is off many a Sportsman list, they are against ARs. There President is thinking about making a Presidental run, they are anti Americans , glad you looked at them, now go to Cabelas or Gander Mountain and spend your money. If you were a Stockholder in that company you lost moocho money.

Never been to a Dick's or Cabella's or Gander. I do not know if they have a presence in New Mexico.
We did have "Sportsman's Warehouse" in albuquerque. That was a nice place. Bought a Kimber .45 there.
As for who sells ARs and who does not. Matters little to me.
It is nice to read that Dick's has old fashioned service and a knowledgeable staff.

I have heard that Dicks is getting out of the hunting and shooting business all together. Luckily we have Academy Sports and Outdoors all over Texas. The Dicks by us is usually deserted, as were the Gander Mountains before them. They have nice fancy stores and the prices to go with it. The Academy stores have plain white walls and they are simple, like a small town Walmart.

Academy just opened where I live.I haven't been there yet. Grander Mountain closed and reopened as Gander Outdoors.

I didn't know that they had expanded that far. They have been in Houston for a long time and have run every other sporting goods store out of town. The big store before them was Oshman's, but they didn't survive Academy. A bunch of others have come and gone. I remember trying to pick up surplus 1888 Mausers at Oshman's before I could lift one. $7.95.

If I limited my shopping needs based on what a company does/supports that I disagree with, I'd never be able to shop at all.
As such, if I need something at Dick's and they have it, I'll grab it. Anything gun related though I go to my local sportsman store. Unless its air guns, I have a different place to shop for that.

It's not politics that is keeping Dicks down, but price and selection. They do better in Austin and places with more yuppies.

Mike I’m with you, other than tobbaco I like to shop local, lumber yards, hardware stores, just don’t like stores telling me what right or wrong, I make up my own mind.

They don't carry Diawa fishing stuff, they only carry Nike shoes or Under Armor same as Nike. In Houston we have Academy with much lower prices for the same products. I don't hate Dicks Sports I just don't go there. I could care less about a AR buy a FAL or go home Rambo want to be. There are far better tactical weapons out there than a AR. I would buy a AR but I don't have a pitbull and I did not marry my sister or enough broken stuff to stack around my trailer with tires on the roof. YMMV

It’s not about the ARs, it’s about making Sportsmaen who use them the bad guys , just was making that point.

Oh and Academy was bought out several years ago they just did not change the name. They seem to have kept the same policies and overall philosophy of operation. They just now have the capital to expand the number of stores and add to their private brands. I have a lot of their "Magellan" brand products that compare favorably with Columbia brand products. In fact it's rare to see Columbia clothing labels these days while I see the Magellan brand everywhere.

Yeah well don't buy a Yeti ice chest while you are at it. I am over the whole AR BS thing the Ruger Mini 14 is a better gun. If I refused to do business with corporations who views I don't like I would not be able to buy S... . So drive your Toyotas and shop at Walley World where nothing is made in this country because you don't like the bathroom policies of Target. One side is as ridicules as the other so in the immortal words of Alfred E Newman " What me Worry ". '

I ask because I, too, recall, the San Francisco Gun Exchange having Mauser 1888 11mm rifles on the used rifle rack. I recall hefting one at the age of 13 or 14 and wondering what one did with an 11mm rifle? It seems that was when they first made it over here. There also .48 Egyptian Remington Rolling Block rifles.

Its a great gun that's well loved and you cant go wrong with it. With that said, for roughly $50 more you can take a step up with the Gamo Swarm Maxxim Multi. It's the same as the Gamo Big Cat in most specs but you go from a single shot to a 10 shot repeater, still have to c-oc-k the barrel. Speaking of which, the Swarm has a gas piston rather than a spring. Mind you, I'm no expert. EDIT: Just learned if you type the word c-oc-k (sans the - marks) the forum auto changes it to "rooster". lol

I like .22 for a couple of reasons. One, I have stubby fingers and a .22 pellet is a little easier to deal with. Two, for small game hunting, the .22 has a better punch to it.
I have read that a .22 has more stability than .177 and the science is pretty solid. My experience though feels they are pretty even.

They carry lower to low mid end guns and fishing models, where Bass Pro starts out and goes up from there. This way they don't compete against each other. But it's hard to beat Academy on the items they carry. Academy has the Savinellis but Bass Pro and Cabelas have the Dunhills.
