A sunny but brisk 10 degree (F) morning. Plenty snow on ground. Chance for a bit more before Christmas. Dogs are out tending to "business". First Cat Squad in house: "Luger", "Ruger", "Squeak", "Fuzz Bomb", "Kipper". 2nd Squad deployed on perimeter. Mouse secure.

If I can get the Branson Cummins B3 to ignite, might scrape the driveway of snow before it turns into sheet ice.

Bought this 3 yrs ago for pine cones and pine straw, works very good. Son in Dayton who now resides in Odem bought one too, generally every fall I make sweeps for wife to cover her plants, I believe it’s a Brinley bought at lLowes.

Made some coffee cake earlier. Turned out not too bad...Needed walnuts to add to it, but it hits the spot.
Wedding rehearsal tonight for a wedding on Christmas eve and then hosting a Christmas version of the Tuesday night quiz tonight on Facebook. Busy evening ahead.

Got my Berne work jacket today and I really like it. I think it's better than the Carhartt. The Walls clothes that I always liked that were made in Texas were bought by Vanity Fare and are mad in China now. The Berne is made in Bangladesh, but it is a really nice warm jacket.

There's a Craftsman that looks the same at the abandoned house next door. It looks like all it needs is to have the vines cut off the axle. I may try to rescue it. We just have so many leaves and pine needles that I don't know if it will be worth it.

Walked around the neighborhood, passing out cranberry orange muffins I made yesterday.

Well, I was up and about pretty early today. Had to head out to the store to get the rest of the provisions for Christmas Eve dinner, or as it is often known, The Feast of the 7 Fishes. Even at 10 AM on a Tuesday, it was busy. Luckily, they were not out of anything I needed. All of the antipasti, fish, produce, etc. is in the fridge — or appropriate storage location — and we are ready to start prepping for Thursday evening. A couple of things I can knock out tonight, but the majority of the prep will happen tomorrow night. The next two days will be a marathon, and though I'm not doing it back home with the family, it will still be worth it to keep the tradition alive.

I stopped raking an let leaves mulch on the ground. In the Spring I sort of cultivate rake them to allow air exchange underneath. The soil here is so silty that it needs all the mulch and sand I can get.

I've talked to the owner and I don't think he would have a problem with me using it. Especially as I have been mowing around his house.

Very strange weather here. Usually by this time we have had several snows and the all-day ‘normal’ temp is in the low 20s or mid-teens. Now we seem to have mornings from -2 to 10 and afternoons in the mid-40s and up. Today was 21° at dawn and 59 in the afternoon, with really nice sun. The usual cold, snowy days set us up for the False Spring we get sometime in January. But this year it seems to be ALL false spring. I sure don’t mind and the dogs are loving all the good run-days. Seems kinda weird, though, and being a pessimoptimist I suspect that when it hits it will hit HARD.

Beautiful day here. I spent most of the morning putting up a ceiling fan in the shop. Then the plumber came to clean out the drain from our bathroom and it turned out that the septic tank was full.

From what I know, when a house is transferred, the septic tank is to be serviced It may vary from state to state, but a competent inspector would have noted it. Check out your laws.

The inspectors in Texas don't inspect septic systems. I had it inspected and knew that it had never been serviced. He came out in June and said to call him back when it was cooler or had problems, whichever came first. It is 67 years old.

Not in the right place, but it will do. Tonight I watched the final episode of year 4 of A FRENCH VILLAGE. I cannot speak highly enough of this series. Many will not watch it b/c it is in French, despite the excellent subtitles.I am old enough that WW2 was “my” war, even though I was pushing 7 when it ended. In New Orleans there were many French, of course, including some who were refugees from the Nazi occupation. Two older ladies lived at my grandmother’s rooming house on Canal Street.
One radio station— I remember so well— played the first bars of La Marseillaise at the head of each hour, no matter what they interrupted to do it.
In last night’s episode the local Maquis defy the Nazis by having a parade into the village to lay a wreath at the monument to past wars. The wreath says, in translation, “From the future winners of this war to the winners of those past.” They paraded in tattered, makeshift uniforms, with wooden guns, carrying the tricoleur— all punishable by death on sight. When they reached the monument their ragtaggle band played La Marseillaise.
I confess it. I wept.

My new toy thanks to my loving wife, a forever Match: Those are neat! I almost bought one on Amazon while I was Christmas shopping. Do you like it/does it work good? So far I love it! It is everything a match is without the issues I have getting my pipe lit before I burn my fingers. They do have a short burn time compared to a regular lighter but from my limited experience it is easily twice the burn time of 6 matches in a row. it also has seals so I don't have to worry as much about evaporation of the fluid. (The reason I don't own a Zippo)

My little one is going on a walk with me this morning. Then back home to start breaking bread for the Christmas stuffing. Good times!
