For the last several months I've had a Pit-bull come on my property barking and lunging at me. I try to chase him off and he just backs up and charges again. On several occasions the owner yells at him to get back
and the dog just ignores him. I've had it with trespassers of all kinds and see'n I can't take a chance of just pulling out the shotgun in desperation I ordered Mace. The POS charged me again today and getting brave from other encounters got even closer. The owner again called out to the dog with no avail, sadly for the dog I was prepared and gave him two shots of pepper spray and off he went. I don't expect him back, unless of course he's an idiot, and again I'll be prepared waiting for him.
Don't get me wrong, I love dogs and have had my share but, they NEVER bothered anyone and were always kept leashed or within a fence they COULDN'T"T get out of. It seems in this one horse town there's just too many toothless Yahoo's (I won't say Hillbilly out of respect for Hill folk) that think they can just let there untrained animals run loose without recourse. And I'm so fricken tired of hearing from folk that "Your in the Country!" BS! Just a excuse to not care and be Lazy worthless self-centered morons. I've been in the country and this aint it my friend. The country is where your nearest neighbor is at least a mile away. Not in a fricken 15 home house track even if it is in the middle of no were. Okay, end of rant.
PS.Do unto others what you would have them do unto you.
I can't seem to do the Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself yet though.

"You're in the country" is IMHO more reason to keep the dogs in check. My dogs chases your livestock and I'm likely to have a dead dog AND your vet bills for the damages.

I had a similar issue when I moved to Arkansas. Seemed like no one bothered with fences or leashes. Drove me up the walls. Coming from military bases where they will collect your dog, confine it, then punish you for not keeping it enclosed, to the same "it's the country" mentality your taking about was too much for me. I'm with you, if I can throw a rock from my porch and it land on your property, we are not in the country, we're in town. Even if you are the kind of owner who doesn't care whether or not your pet plays in traffic, at least you could have the decency to keep it from harassing the rest of the neighborhood.

I can't agree more sir and am surprised I've got to replies in just a short time promoting my opinion. Usually when it comes to this subject I'm frowned upon...........at least from my neighbors anyway but, need I speculate why?

They'll walk around the barn several times before finding the door.

Years ago there was a Pitbull running wild on our Plaza. I would go to my building and the dog would attack me. So, I carried a D-Handel shovel and pounded him on the head with it. He got the message. He would approach. I showed the shovel. He backed off. The owner could not care less. He is now dying in Denver, bless his heart. The dog was eventually hit by a truck on the road and killed. No loss.

Some will just run ya in for clearing your nose. Better safe then sorry. I go to jail for ANYTHING and they'll take my SS away.

Those who don't train and keep there animals on the own property are worse then the animals they don't care for, and that's as far as I wish to go with that statement.

Long time ago my neighbor in a subdivision that everyone had acreage let his 2 hunting big dogs out, I was working a turnaround, early out, late in. A working friend died, wife and I went to wake came back at 10 pm, we had a van, started to get out and 2 big dogs snarling, couldn't get out, wife said I've been meaning to tell you about these dogs. Tried to get out again and they snarled and advanced, I put my .45 out the sliding door and almost touched one and bang, blew him about 4 ft away. The other one took off.

To finish the story I went to work at 4am, wife called and said Sheriff Deputy is here to arrest you for shooting the dog. Now my wife was the hairdresser for the local little community. I called the Commander of the Sheriffs station whose wife came to my wife's shop. Told him the story, he was horrified about the dogs, he apologized, I told him if that other one doesn't let me out my truck tonight he's a gone pecan, he told me I'm picking him up you won't have anymore trouble.

I can't seem to do the Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself yet though. If the neighbor's pit-bull comes in my yard and lunges at me one time, its a dead dog. Period. That 1911 on my hip aint for extra ballast on a windy day. If the dog challenges me, what will he do to my wife if its her instead of me? Or my daughter...or my granddaughter? And what would then happen to the neighbor if his damned dog bit or tackled Shweetie? So Id be loving my neighbor as myself, cuz Id be saving my neighbor FROM myself. Country aint just geographical location, its a state of mind.

Great tale OC and and I can't agree more with both you and BW and, there is nothing more I love doing then ridding this area of Trespassers and inviting the neighbors over for the Bar-B-Que later but, as I said I can't take the chance of getting a Barney Fife sheriff that takes me in on made up charges. The Government is just dieing to take SS away for any reason they can find and I want to make sure they pay every last dime I'm owed for as long as I live.

Guess lucky here. City dweller, 6ft fenced in yard, leash law. Had more Irish Setters thru the years than anything. Worst could happen with them...might knock you down & lick you to death! Family next door has part pit, mostly GoldenRetriver electric fence & same temperament as the above. Nuttin' but love to all.

I love animals and would not want to hurt any animal...
But...
If a pitbull was coming at me or my children, I'd do whatever it took to protect myself and them.
What irritates me more is irresponsible owners.

Many years ago I owned a house that set well back off the road on my 3 acres. I had a neighbor with a Rottweiler that charged me every time I went to my mailbox. The owner often watched and occasionally yelled at the dog but never did anything to discourage it. One day I strapped a 357 on my side and when the dog charged me I fired into the ground, the dog backed up and the neighbor yelled at me. I advanced toward the dog and fired again and again until I was at my property line.
The dog was never off it's chain again.

I had another dog incident with my former next-door neighbor, a psychotic woman. Her Italian Mastiff, one of three, came onto my property and grabbed one of my geese. I responded with my Coach Gun loaded with "00". One blast next to the dog hoping he would drop the goose. Nope. He rand next door, goose in mouth with me in pursuit. The owner immediately called the State Police claiming I threatened to kill her. A while later I had two NMSP officers at the front gate and they looked unhappy. On my own, I raised my arms and rotated to show no gun in pocket or waistband while announcing the same. I opened the gate and we talked about the entire event. I showed where I had fired, which was on my die of the line. Fortunately, the senior of the two officers was a mean and grouchy older guy I sort of knew. He believed my version of the facts and did not arrest me. He did take the shotgun promising to return it should the DA not press charges again me. The DA who does know me, sent a letter, some weeks later stating there was no case since there were no witnesses, just neighbor against neighbor. So, I got my gun back. The neighbor tried harder to keep the dogs on her property. Eventually, she lost the house in foreclosure and is gone. The new neighbor is a regular guy with the loveliest Labrador Retriever ever. "Woody" comes over to play with my Aussie and I am always glad to see him. I give him treats and he is like my dog around me,

But I am ready if a bad one comes along m I'm glad you gave the dogs a chance to show they were friendly. I cringe every time I hear or read "pitbull" in anything because so many fear the breed. While caution with any large dog is prudent, one shouldn't fear any breed. There are good and bad of all breeds. Years ago when we lived in a tiny town in Oregon i was walking my 100 lb Malamute. We'd had problems with a couple of lab mixes so I was already on edge. In those days I open carried a Ruger GP100 in .357. This gorgeous little Pitbull Terrier came out of nowhere and charged right at us. I hauled back on my dogs leash while drawing my pistol only to have that critter stop 4 feet in front of me, sit down and look up at me as I was pointing my pistol at it. All he wanted was to meet my dog and get some loving, but being a pittie he charged out full bore to meet the walkers. Fortunately I didn't fire.

German Shepherd can be the most loving dog in the world but because they are smart, they can also be bred to be horribly viscous.
