The lifespan of dogs is God’s cruelest joke. Or it could be said the lifespan affords us the opportunity to provide homes for many over our life, and experience the individual blessings that each one brings into our orbit. Half empty/ half full glass.

I’ve heard that. They have much to teach us, and we’re too stupid to learn it quickly.

That is a better way to look at the short life span issue. Thanks, Charlie.

That is a better way to look at the short life span issue. Thanks, Charlie. It may be a better way. The assumption being that having many dogs over a lifetime gives us the opportunity to really experience them and learn what they have to teach us— which is a very great deal! On the other hand I have had dogs that, if I had the choice, I could have spent a lifetime with. Jack, my 10YO GSP, is such a dog— but I know I have only a very few more years, at most, with him. Murphy, my last Rottie, was another— so kind and wise I suspected he was a boddhisatva. But it is what it is and we have to accept that. Maybe a bit grudgingly, but just glad to have what we do have.

I have insight to your meaning here. My Lab, "Rio Shadow", was my guardian at a difficult time. She watched over me. She was two years old when she arrived and we bonded in minutes.

As we can all see by the two threads dogs are 300% more popular than cats, hell some folks just call cats cat cause they don't deserve a proper name.

Since when has “Cat” not been a proper name?

I'm actually not a cat person. Dogs are better. I just made the mistake of feeding one damn stray cat in the suburbs, and now I feed all the stray cats, and they figure out what the dog door does.

Looks like I’ve got a new smokin’ buddy. Casey is my son’s pup, and she likes to just hang out and visit with me when I’m smoking out on the porch.

There is something about Labrador Retrievers that gets me every time. I believe they are the most human compatible dog breed on the planet and I have had many different dogs in my life.

I think that was a Beatles song.! The wife is allergic so for thirty years no cats and a lot more birds and what not. The average cat kills two things a week so they are serial killers the Smithsonian says over 14 billion animals every year. If a dog exhibits this trait it is not a dog for very long.

They have destroyed the entire ecosystems of many islands all over the world, causing more extinctions than any other human activity.

Our song birds much of the year are Magpies and they do not give a hoot about cats. In the Spring, Meadowlarks return and they are vulnerable to predation. I feed my cats well. They seldom prowl the fields as they are mostly waiting for another handout from the Democrat-In-Chief here.

Of course not. But feral cats are a huge problem. They are just following their instincts. But seek to destroy a few hundred of them, even suggest it and you get locked up. Nobody's pit bull could ever hurt anyone, except for the thousands that do every year. I am not trying to piss anyone off. I have known the sweetest pit bull that would follow me around and lick my hand. He just wanted his ears scratched. I have spent hours with a kitten on my lap, and I have had less pleasant interactions with them too.

I have many semi-feral cats. They are well fed and lazy.
I am worried about the Meadowlarks this spring!!

Unpleasant for cat folk, but all farmers and ranchers (less them) know that from time to time a search-and-destroy is necessary. Ranchers less than farmers since they usually live where redtails, owls, coyotes, and ‘coons do most of the control work. I would hate for my little barn cat, Cat, to fall victim but it’s just part of the environment she lives in.

It is part of the cycle of life here.
