I raised this one from five weeks old with a bottle. He was taken from his mother too soon. We've had a good time these nine years. Took him in for a limp and after an x-ray determined that he has bone cancer. I'll have to put him down when his pain gets too much. Right now he's still happy and active and I can't put him down like that. The vet said that the cancer has spread through his body. I'm really sorry to hear that. Mighty hard to take. I've been through it with three dogs, two of them osteosarcomas. All you can do is give them the best quality of life you can manage until that terrible day comes when you know it's time. Heavy, heavy.

Heavy, heavy. Thanks for the condolences; sounds like you've been through this many times. My last one was a nice male boxer who was having strokes and kept falling down and couldn't get up. He lived to be 14!

It's tough no matter how long you've had them. One of mine was 5, the other two 7 and 9. The first had a lymphoma, the other two the osteos. What breed is your boy? (All my three were Rotties.)

He is a mixed breed 90 pound male and parents were Rottweiler and German Shepherd and maybe some other influences.

Sadly, that makes sense. I love Rotties. My three were wonderful gentlemen: smart, gentle, funny, great companions and completely reliable in temperament. But after my third I decided that I couldn’t face the risk anymore. I miss ‘em, but I had no choice. My three prior GSPs have all died of old age with no such complications.

Back in California I knew who a guy who raised a special kind of Rottie. They had long fur, square heads. He said they were closer to the original dog the Romans raised for their Legions. I do not know if he was pulling my leg. They were good dogs. Anyone seen these or know about them?

There is absolutely NO way he could legitimately claim they were closer to the “Roman dogs” since we really don’t know much about them. The German metzgerhunden MAY be that link, but we don’t know. Sounds kinda like marketing to me. But that’s OK; they were/are probably great dogs. :^)

Yes, he was neutered at an early age. I planned to neuter Eli, or thought I did. But the latest info on neutering goes against everything I thought I knew about the subject. It has given me pause and right now I don’t know WHAT to think. There are several articles about it. Goog “effects of neutering on male dogs” for the details. BTW, all three of my Rotties were neutered.

Cats suck in so many ways compared to dogs. YMMV 👍👍 This is general rule. In all honesty, I must say that I have known 3 good cats in my life. Not mine.

I have a good one. She just showed up here last February and is still with us. She's a barn cat and doesn't come in the house. She and Eli are great buddies altho he can be a little rough on her. She seems to like it though and always comes back for more. During the day she hangs out on the deck, have no idea where she goes at night. Very wary, just like a wild animal. Only reason she is still alive I reckon. I don't care that much for cats but she's an exception. Her name is Cat.

I had a Manx mixed breed cat once that behaved like a dog somewhat. He followed me around wherever I went and was more interested in me that he was his himself. He was very brave and met his end one night when coyotes came through the area. I went outside when awakened and found my younger cat, a kitten, safe up in a small tree. Pinchi was nowhere to be found.

We had a friend who had 3 Cornish Rex's. Pretty cool cats, but they are active.

Coyotes love picking off cats. Barn cats usually don’t last long around these parts. That’s one reason I haven’t gotten too close with Cat and refuse to make her a pet. Having her around for ten months is WAY out of the ordinary.

To bad you you couldn't give your cat a 204 ruger to play with the yot's. He he mine has a 6.5-24x50 Nikon on it.

I am fond of my cats.
Have four new kittens born over the summer. The male, "Luger" has moved into the house and is very much in charge. He challenges everyone. The others: "Ruger", "Walther" and "Beretta" hang out in the store room adjacent to the house. They behave in a feral fashion.
The old guard are still with me. So, there about eleven I estimate. They come and go and some return again.

I made the mistake of feeding a hungry stray cat. Very soon I was feeding ALL the hungry stray cats. The ones that stay outside don't last longer than about two months. The ones that suddenly decide to come inside and domesticate themselves last longer.
One day I went into the kitchen and five feral strays had decided to domesticate themselves all of a sudden, all together. We live here now. It was weird.
Now I have too many indoor cats. They're all named Cat. So I have Orange Cat, Pale Cat, Loud Cat, Fraidy Cat, Sweet Cat, Scrawny Cat etc, and they all want pettings. It's not good; they're expensive.
People say cats have no sense of personal space. This is not true. It's 'All Your Space Belong To Us'.
