Thinking of getting a new pipe lighter. Thought I'd turn to the patch for some suggestions. I've never been one to pay much mind to lighters, but as I'm getting more mature, pipe smoking is becoming more and more of a hobby and ritualistic. Wondering if there's any features or brands and so forth I may want to look for. Thank you in advance.

I.M. Corona Pipe Master if you want to spend a few dollars or a bic if you want to go very much lower in price.

Not sure if this will help but make sure it’s a soft flame (butane) and not a torch lighter you would use for cigars. When in doubt matches also works well.

I actually use wooden matches when I can, but I also have a pipe insert in my zippo when I just want to "get 'er done"

I have a nice Corona, but use a Zippo 90 percent of the time.

I like bics. If I lose em I’m not out much. And they come with many colors and designs.

I get free bic lighters and free cans of butane to fill my fancier lighters.
I use bic mostly, but you cannot beat a zippo if there is any wind.

Forgot to mention you can ship your zippo to them and they will install the pipe insert for you.

Zippo w/pipe insert, especially for windy days. For calmer smokes I use a IM Corona Old Boy knock off from Aliexpress. Less than $20 delivered. While it is certainly not IM Corona quality, it works quite well. I’ve been using mine for a year and a half with no issues. I use the IM Corona flints and Xikar Purofine Butane. Search for Pipe lighter 2017 on Aliexpress.com

I am assuming you have already been using bic lighters. So I would suggest Im corona, zippo or colibri never had an issue with one myself. Just make sure its a soft flame for your pipe and that it is filled with quality butane (multiple times refined). Good luck.

You can get a Nimrod Commander fairly cheap on eBay. These lighters rock!

One thing I've noticed about the pipe insert on the Zippo... It's difficult to get the pipe started with one. It's great for relights though.
If you're going bic, I'd suggest one that has the side nozzle rather than a standard lighter. Harder to burn your thumb that way.

I don't care for the odor of the Zippo fuel, but you can't beat it in a windy place. Otherwise I have both Dunhill's and Kiribi. My Dunhill's are my favorite. Very pricey new, but you can always get a good deal on an estate. Alway work well. Kiribi's are hit and miss. Never heard a bad word about Old Boys. Don't use Bics as they usually burn my fingertips and get hot. But for flying on an airplane (which I don't do anymore) they are the only thing that gets through security. And there is always matches. I use those a lot as well.

I've had my Xikar for over two years now and I love it. It's a wonderful lighter, looks cool, and always reliable.

Along with my first ever briar pipe, I recently ordered the needed tools including a Capt Blk lighter. Opened the box and unwrapped everything with great anticipation. The dang pos lighter came apart in my hands before I even had a chance to dock a butane canister to fill-er-up. So I used a little brute force and pressed it back together so it works. For now. But I sure as heck don’t expect it to last very long.

They may not be what you want to use long term, but a danged Bic does very serviceable duty as a pipe lighter to keep you going.

“ Don't use Bics as they usually burn my fingertips and get hot. But for flying on an airplane (which I don't do anymore) they are the only thing that gets through security. And there is always matches. I use those a lot as well.” You can get a refillable butane lighter through TSA, but don’t be surprised if they want to test it to see if it is a soft flame. Usually, my Lotus makes it through without being tested, but one time I was flagged, probably because the scanner saw the cigars in my pipe bag. I have the Lotus LBLP 1010 I bought for $25 from my tobacconist (nice flame angle)that works great, but nothing beats a zippo if you are in the wind. www.bestreviews.guide/lotus-lighter-for-pipesGlad I bought mine at my local tobacconist though, if I ever have a problem, he will honor a lifetime warranty.

Also, if you arent used to carrying a lighter, you may want to try something else for a bit, just because losing a really nice lighter is a bit more heartbreaking than losing a zippo. Before I bought this lighter I used a zippo with a butane pipe lighter insert. Worked well. The inserts are pretty cheap to find, even on Amazon.
