While stopping off at an antique store today, I found a few pipes at some great prices that deserved to be rescued. First off is a Saseini Seconds, Saseini Coventry, heavy soot on the rim with no charring, and a badly oxidized stem, it should clean up nicely.  Next is a calabash with stampings on thye silver of CPF which is Collosus pipe factory. The stem is too tight to force, off to Mike Myers for cleaning this one. my old eyes cannot make out the rest of the silver stamps so as to date...the first one appears to be an anchor, 2nd a star, 3rd-? I found this pic on pipedia, it is the same 3 characters, but with the CPF in oval below it...  The third one is an LHS "Special Make Imported Root Briar and was their top of the line pipe. In 1940, a Special make commanded a $25 price tag that other places on the net say is $400 in todays coin. thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/7268/before-after-lhs?page=1&scrollTo=261076It is a large pipe, 80 grams and the cchamber is a bit over 3/4 inch, this one will clean up easily.  |

Wow!
I don't see a tooth mark on any of em...you must carry a horseshoe around when shop the antique stores. I mostly find chewed up Grabows lately...

I got no money but I do have a LHS saucer shape and a POS stinger that I never smoke packed away.

All great pick ups. That LHS needs to be tested by yours truly to make sure it is safe.
I believe the last mark is an eagle.
"it is a feaux stamped nickel plated brass pipe made by C.P.F. or Colossus Pipe Factory which dates it between 1896 and 1920 based in New York."
"Those 'anchor/star/eagle' pseudo-marks appear on the ferrules of pipes from different American makers, those with wear reveal brass base metal under what is likely nickel plating - more information might be found on pipe forums...

Thanks for clearing up my muddy description, I should have said silver in color, I am pretty sure it is nickle. And you are spot on about the Faus stampings, they were commonly used to give an air of distinction.

Niiiiiiiice. Especially love the calabash. Me too. The bowl came of easily enough, and the cork gasket is in remarkable condition. The inside of the gourd also. The bowl looks like someone enjoyed smoking it, I am looking forward to what Mike Myers can do, the dude has bags of pixie dust I tell ya. When I get a stubborn stem on an old pipe, I hear the phrase in my noggin..."Fools go where Angesl fear to tread." I am guess in that he uses some sort of pipe friendly release agent, he has done it on some pipes for me, and he always delivers. |

Yeah, I was wondering out loud if a stinger might have slid over that? I would think a collapsed lung would result. 2 tiny dots, hmmm..  Baby vampires start smoking early. |

Well the pipes came back. I suck at photography and the lighting is all wrong, and the sad old saying of the pictures do not do justice is certainly the case. The Sasieni Coventry.   The LHS Special Make Imported briar Root.  And the calabash that required a new stem, the old one broke on removal.  Pretty pleased! |

Regarding those CPF hallmarks, you might already know this but that was an often-used threesome of American pipe-makers - I have a WDC with that trio, and I've seen it on CPFs before. The anchor is reminiscent of the Birmingham anchor hallmark, but in this case has nothing to do with Birmingham. |
