I dunno Ron, the .22 cal would be at the top of my list in such a scenario. I have 3k rounds. I don't think that I would live that long.

A nice fire in the fireplace. Two loved hounds snoring on their couch. A nice glass of wine. A pipe, well loaded and nicely lit. What’s not to like? Politics can go to hell and the sooner the better.

Americans, in particular, are oddly fond of .30s. I guess the 2 big wars are probably largely responsible for that. There is a lot to be said for a SHTF scenario using the more common calibers. Yeah, that's why I brought it up. My comment about the .30s was more about why they are more common calibers in the US. Why did they become so common in the first place? Sitting here thinking about it, I guess at the time the .30-30 and .30-06 came out, the powders were such that the extra bore (over a .25-.28 caliber) really did have advantages.

But then I've had no problem buying 30cal bullets for reloading my 308. That said, I did buy a 9mm conversion barrel for a 40cal Walther PPQ.

The 1894 Winchester did not come out in 30-30 first. But when it did it became immediately popular, particularly in the east. When the US went to the 30-06 there were many thousand of 30-40 Krags sold as surplus. That pretty much did the trick. Then, after the war, the Springfield ‘03s and 03-A1s were surplus. By then the .30 generic was firmly intrenched. The Michigan and Pennsylvania deer woods were chock-a-block with guys in red checked Woolrch and sporterized (to various degrees) Springfields. The die were cast.

Been a busy day. Work was nonstop, then it was house chores. Went and get the rest of the wine rack parts. Got very frustrated at Home Depot though, as the Stain + Poly that I used on the others appears to be no longer available. So, I had to buy them separately, and now it will be two steps instead of one. I'm guessing the combined product wasn't as popular.
Came home, dumped all that in the basement for tomorrow, made dinner, and then replanted 4 houseplants. 2 existing, 2 new. Now I'm done for the evening, lol. Pipe and some wine.

Wind is howling like a freight train blowing though the trees. If we get any snow out of this storm I shall be surprised. Clouds are surely scattered out of the valley.
Mini flashlight on a lanyard around my neck waiting for the power line to part somewhere. Lamps, lanterns at the ready. WHen the power goes off, complete and utter blackness falls. There is not the slightest lumen or photon evident. Marbles will than have the advantage of me and I will depend on him for a change. LOL!

Seems they still have a few of the Stain + Poly blend, but I believe they are all oil based now, and the color selection was sub-par. I'm just annoyed that they would get rid of Dark Walnut. That's a pretty standard color to remove from a line of stains. Morons.

26 degrees this morning. Supposed to take a mare to an indoor arena today and start a tuneup on her. We’ll see if the owner shows up

I am not that bound up! You reminded me of a funny story from years ago. I spent much time traveling through the old East Germany in the early 1980s while it was under Soviet control. I was traveling by truck hauling a substantial load on truck and trailer. We had to go by night and I was getting kind of groggy. Lots of truck activity at night in the old DDR. Every truck seemed to have an illuminated figure on the roof of the cab. In my tired state with eyes barely focusing and being in a Communist country, I thought those truck figures were busts of Karl Marx. That seemed appropriate. It was only later at a border checkpoint I realized it was not Karl but The Michelin Man.

Seems like the places around here have the dark colors, but no Golden Oak to match our cabinets. Probably have to go to a paint store.
