We always stocked in the firewood when I was growing up on the farm, you can never have too much of the stuff! In the little southern Oregon town I grew up in it never got below about 10 degrees fahrenheit. only got below freezing at all for a short part of the winter. Still we got a good 2 feet of snow each year for about three weeks. (Yea I know, that's nothing LOL) I know southern Oregon. Had an aunt and great aunt living in Corvallis. Winters are cold, damp, and dark in the forest. I spent enough time cutting, hauling, splitting (the old fashioned way), and stacking wood growing up that I prefer not to be reminded of it. It's good, physical, outdoors work, but, man, the most physically tired I can remember ever being was after a particular Saturday cutting oak and hickory. I was about a 9th-grader, I guess. Got home, collapsed on the couch, didn't so much as wiggle till bedtime.

@ toshtego:
A little farther south I'm afraid, We were in Williams. If you know where Grants pass and Medford are then go south and slightly east of Grants Pass, and west and a little south of Medford and you find us. About 20 miles as the crow flies from the California border.

Gives one a sense of... POWER! I do not know about a sense of power. A sense of security, certainly. Wood is my main heat source. Without it, I will be dead in 24 hours during winter. The house can hold heat about eight hours. 12 hours and it is colder inside that I would want to be. 24 hours and I better be in a sleeping bag. Zero degrees (F) is common. 35 degrees below Zero is the coldest I have seen it hear. Not unusual to drop into min high teens or low 20s. So, constant burning is the key. I go through about six or seven cords each season. Power over the cold.

An observation, rant and rave. After being on the patch for a while. I have noticed some are more outgoing, friendly, reserved and even people who act school boy bitches. Unfortunate in some cases that adults can't act like adults (pathetic really). But it makes me happy to have made so many friends here that the friends outweigh the loosers.

Zero degrees this morning, Hoar Frost on all surfaces making things sparkle. Beautiful but cold!!

29 degrees and overcast, but no wind or precipitation. Gonna go work a mare again for a customer, then maybe get some more firewood split this afternoon.

Knee doing better. I might try driving locally to see if I can lift my right foot off the throttle pedal and onto the brake.
Breathing is still hard. Ribs and sternum sore as heck.

Had to go into Marshall today. Traffic everywhere! And people! (People, as a group, suck, you know) Harbor Tools was out of the compressor I wanted. Lowe's didn't have anything on my list. Been 53 and light rain all day.

Got the mare worked, but by the time I got home, got the other horse unloaded, got the trailer unhooked and saddles put away, it was dark. So no firewood split.

Unfortunate in some cases that adults can't act like adults (pathetic really). But it makes me happy to have made so many friends here that the friends outweigh the loosers. After years of being online and in online groups I have learned one thing. Many of us, myself included at times, forget to put our best foot forward online. I have met many of my online associates in person. At least where gamers are concerned they always tended to be a bit more mature and adult in person. For me the patch has actually been a bit of fresh air so to speak. Everyone I've interacted with here already act adult. Those that I've met in person were exactly as expected. Which is to say upstanding individuals I am proud to call friend.

Relatively busy day. Nice weather for January. Ran some errands. Got the puppy's face trimmed - to remove the tear stains. Picked up 100 rounds of 40cal ammo at the gun range. Only $17 a box. Ate lunch at a nearby bar/restaurant where I usually have a drink after shooting. First time I've been there for 9 months. They've remodeled a bit.
Drove to another nearby town to another gun shop. Picked up 2 boxes of 28 gauge. They were pretty picked over. On Monday they had 2 or 3 hundred thousand rounds of ammo for sale - and during the day another 100 thousand 223 were delivered. It was a 2 hour wait just to get in the door. Police had to direct traffic. Some people drove 3 hours to get there. I didn't know anything about it until the next day - but I wouldn't have waited that long in line anyway. I'm not that hard up for ammo. They're supposed to get another smaller delivery next week. If I can buy on line, I might try that.

I remember the last time, there were lines out the doors at the local gun shops. I'd just shake my head and continue right on out of the parking lot. Nobody likes a Democratic victory more than a gun shop.

Nobody likes a Democratic victory more than a gun shop. With all the violence this year, gun sales have skyrocketed and the estimate is that there are now 8.5 million new first time gun owners. They supposedly have caused the shortage. Basically, the ammo manufacturers estimates of demand have gone out the window. AND I believe Remington Ammunition had a dip in production during the Remington bankruptcy. Vista Outdoor, the new owners, are calling back furloughed workers (or have called them back) and are getting the plant up to full production again.

Well, I hoped to get a COVID vaccine tomorrow. The county health department announced they had 500 vaccines to be given out tomorrow - first come, first served - if you qualify - starting 9AM. BUT tonight at 6PM, there were already 2 dozen cars in line - so I'm not going to bother.
Hey, I've got an idea. I'll just bribe someone for a vaccine - with ammo!
