Pickled eggs and pickled bologna used to be a staple in factory bars around here.

Supply run today to the "Cowboy Capitol of the World." For the first time in ages had lunch at the Mex eatery and had my favorite, flautas. The best part of supply runs is coming home.

Gotta ease up on those spicy foods, Ron...gonna get tummy upset...these days breathing gets my stomach upset..rough gettin old. It wasn't anything spicy. I haven't had anything spicy since Monday. Ever try the Super Sonic Breakfast Burrito from Sonic? Onions, jalapeños, tater tots, eggs and sausage in a tortilla. Really good and they haven't bothered me yet. I think I just got a bug. Finally got a AC guy out today to give us an estimate on the AC work. Now that the hot weather is almost over.

This should be a holiday in Texas. It's Diez y seis de Septiembre, the Mexican 4th of July. We were still part of Mexico when we won our independence from Spain. Cinco de Mayo is a pitiful little holiday by comparison, just an excuse to drink frozen margaritas.

Bandera hasn't seen a real cowboy in decades. I thought it was a joke the first time I visited there 50 years ago. Nothing but over priced "western" wear stores.

Coming out of WM with my supplies this afternoon I passed an old guy in dusty duds, knee high high-heels, spurs, handlebar 'stash, and a hat that might have gone up San Juan Hill (or Kettle). We do see the real thang often here. The Sandhills breeds 'em and a coupla times a year they mosey down to civilization. Such as it is.

Certainly, northern New Mexico has a lot of similarly costumed posers. I find that the people who are quiet spoken and humble tend to be real. The more flamboyant, the more they have something to sell. When I see these guys in Taos climb into an old and battered truck, I figure they have enough salt to be the real deal. Fancy dressers in expensive new trucks tend to be Chiropractors, real estate developers or just loud mouths.

There are too many of the real thing that would make them look like what they are for them to risk it.

Bicycled this morning while it was cool. First time since March. Found that I am more out of shape than I thought. Only did 10.88 miles/50 minutes/averaged 13 mph.
Took a short trip to a place called Allerton Park here in central Illinois - for a picnic. Then walked a few trails. Not too far or too fast. It was in the 90's.
Have tickets to see 3 Dog Night tonight at a local amphitheater, but COVID numbers are bad here - so we skipped it. They should be playing right about now.

Well, I’m loading up the living quarters in the horse trailer again today, pulling out of here Tuesday or Wednesday. Fall gathers are mostly done, haying is done, and I have family that needs some help. Heading to Texas, north of Dallas outside of a town called Princeton. Taking 2 horses, and I’m told the horse training field is wide open in the area, I guess we’ll see. Probably be there at least through the winter.

Back home from 3 days in Hel, er, Houston. We were on the Katy freeway 3 times and all 26 lanes were stopped twice because of accidents. You can't drive across Houston without seeing 5 or 6 wrecks. We came straight up I69 and the entire freeway north bound was closed because of a fatal motorcycle accident. Funeral escort cops were on Gold Wings and it was raining. Scared me half to death the way were whipping the bikes around in the rain. Everyone drives like they are in the Daytona 500. My nerves just can't take much of that.

The funeral escorts around here are ridiculous. They drive crown vics, and drive like they are stunt drivers. They take chances and whip into an intersection with reckless abandon to shut the traffic down. Sworn LEO’s use far more restraint when responding to legitimate calls. I really do not understand how these guys get way with what they do…. They are escorting a dead body, there is no emergency.

I do not like the attitude and they have no authority to impede traffic. They pretend to be poh-lease but are just thugs. Now hereabouts, when an important person is delivered to the church for funeral, the hearse is led by firetrucks with wailing sireeeens. Totally illegal, of course, but no one cares. That includes the Sheriff and this bunch called the New Mexico State Police- some phantom bunch....

Dewayne,
it sounds like in regards to winter coming up, it sounds like you headed to greener pastures in a sense.
Not a bad way to roll.

The funeral escorts in Houston have always been off-duty cops, usually but not always on motorcycle. They have the right to stop traffic. The drivers in Houston are terrible. They try to pass the funeral procession on the shoulders and every other thing you can imagine. Up here, people stop, get out of their trucks and remove their hats.
