Pulled down one of my old books of collected works of Longfellow. “My Lost Youth” is really ringing my bell right now, but not in a bad way. New Years Day is, I suppose, a pretty good day for nostalgia.

Finished Rhythm of War today. Now comes the long wait for the next book.
Looks like American Gods might be up next. Or Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

Finished Rhythm of War today. Now comes the long wait for the next book. Looks like American Gods might be up next. Or Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss You know that most of Rothfuss' fans are about to kill him because he doesn't know when he will finish, or even if he will finish the series. The first two books are great, but there is no ending. And the first two really need an ending.

C J Box Jag! Love his stuff. My Sister read & loved his books, I read the first one, didn't tickle my fancy much, will have to give it a go again. It was "little house on the prairieish" or something, was into Gov/black ops/CIA/Clancy type reads. But recently saw a series by Box on Prime or Netflix & was good.

Starting Ulick O’Connor’s MICHAEL COLLINS & THE TROUBLES. This will be my fourth or fifth book on Collins, a hero of mine. (I have so few.) I’ve been to the bend in the road near Beal na Blath, County Cork, where he was killed, several times. For me it has always been a moving experience. Had he lived he may have disappointed, like so many pols. But Ireland would have been a different country. Instead we got that snake DeValera.

We tried the American Gods series, but I don't think it had the same feel as the book. And my wife couldn't get into it.

Thanks for the tip. I’ve read a lot about the Six Counties, but my interest is mostly in the foundation of the Republic. I did an extensive tour of the north a few years back, at the invitation of the UK Tourist Board, to develop cultural tours there. Went into a Catholic church to listen to the choir practice going on and when I came out I was braced by two punks who thought I shouldn’t be going in there. Got off without a rumble but told me I was on “iffy ground.” Made a very strong impression on me.

That was one of the first books that made me laugh and cry. I thought I had Irish Catholic ancestors, but when I got into Ancestry I found that I was descended from Scotch-Irish Protestants.

Read TRINITY long ago. Elizabeth, the first one, settled Scots protestants in the north. That involved kicking Catholics off their land. A long and complex story, and not a very pleasant one. “It” all started there. And the rest is history.

I also am at fault for about 20 slaves, though I wouldn't own one if you gave it to me. However, I am absolved of the above because my dad was half American Indian. I have a very confusing guilt complex. One ancestor was an advisor to King Henry, and another was an officer in Cromwell's army in Ireland. But I had 2 grandmothers on the Trail of Tears. Another 6th great grandfather led the Schenectady Massacre. I'm not ashamed of him at all. 😁😜😁👹
