Maybe that's their secret, anti-lion chemical weapon.

You may know that I am caring for a 13 year old female Rhodesian Ridgeback. This is a large breed in the "Sight Hound" category. Used in southern Africa to keep lions away and two legged predators with bad aptitudes. Usually, they work in groups of three or more and are reported to be effective in hassling lions to the point they go to someone else's farm. They are fast, nimble and can be aggressive. "Phaela", the old girl with me, is a sweet pea, of course. Just a dear old hound at about 95 pounds. There is only one issue. The worst flatulence I have encountered with a dog. Now, her human has her on a special diet and that helps somewhat. I always know when she enters the room as a cloud of gas precedes her. Since her arrival last Spring, we have been free from all lions, Not one seen here. Success! I calls it. I'd put my friends Doberman Dana up against her. She drove all 4 of us outside in our pajamas one December night in Jemez Springs when it was 20 below. The poor parrot was making coughing and gagging noises.

I've had mostly big, brachyocephalic dogs: boxers, a cane Corso, a pit. All are known for prodigious crepitation. A 20 pound Westie was far, far worse. He made up for less quantity with a quality like Lovecraftian horror. Room-clearing, eye-watering horror.

Fortunately, neither of my boys are flatulent. In fact, I can’t recall a GSP that has been. I suspect it is less a breed than a diet issue. One thing I do know: Never give beans to a Rottweiler. You have been warned.

Smoked lamb lungs? That's a thing? It was a chance encounter…and chancy in a bad way.

It was pretty epic.
We had a house full of people, and “Bella”’s actions dominated the conversation. A day or two later, she still had a commanding presence.
If you hate someone, buy their dog smoked lamb lungs.

The dog was a scam. You had to do a Zelle transfer before you could pick her up. She was pretty enough to make people stupid.

My wife cannot pass up the puppy shops at the local malls, I think that they are better than some in the past were puppy mills. The one near us posts the breeders name, but never any prices are posted… I know that they charge insane prices, the people that seem to “adopt” these animals do not come across as people in the best financial position to do so.

There's a lot of scum out there making a buck and very few in it for actually improving the breed. Or hybrid in this case, which are probably better dogs than "purebreds" from inferior lineage. But cute goes a long way!

Gads, they had payment plans at some of those. Cute overtakes common sense sometimes. A lot of petstore pups we saw--no matter the breed--came from the same address. ETA: I haven’t been in a mall in years, but I liked checking out the cute pups, too!

Haven't been to a mall in years. All of our pets other than dogs came from reputable pet stores. All of our dogs have come from friends or family breeders, no puppy mills. A couple were adopted off the street and one from the pound. We could never afford the mall pet store prices for dogs.

FWIW all of our dogs except the very first came from shelters. But that's what happens when you work in dog rescue for as long as we did

I’m personally opposed to pet shop dogs. No reputable breeder sells dogs that way. I have to meet the breeder and see the parents and sibs, if possible. Good breeders are cautious about where they place their dogs; good owners are cautious about breeders. All-breed mills are to be avoided IMO.

"But the pups are already there." They won't be if you don't buy them. Anyone breeding for money is doing good for neither the puppy nor the breed. I've seen papers on dozens of these things and nary a Ch. in the lines.
It's a PET peeve of mine. Ouch.

I don’t care much about CH in the lines. I want a healthy, energetic pup from hunting parents who have a good disposition and some personality.

Oh, agreed. But that does show that they aren't breeding the best.
I had a great "ChiBo"--Chihuahua x Boston Terrier I rescued from a breeder when the dog needed spaying in her 4th litter. The dog was awesome for us, but she had epilepsy! Seizures were well managed after we took her in, but these clowns were breeding a seizure dog.

The last 3 dogs we've bought from the families that bred them are the ones that ran up to me and licked my face first. I am discriminating that way.

“Best” is highly subjective. Best for WHAT? “Best” in the show ring (on his/her way to the holy grail of “CH”) may not be worth a farthing in the field. Papa and grandpap who were 110% birders is worth more than any number of CHs to me. But having said that, all of my GSPs and Rotts had CHs sprinkled all thru their pedigrees. I just cared more about who THEY were than who their grandparents were.

He was Samwise Gamgee and he lived up to the name. Sammie, 1978-1981.

When MIL passed away, we raised her Westie: Pippin. No kidding. Why only three?
People who are interested in buying a certain breed are usually interested in that breed's standard. The standards are by definition objective. Seizures are not in any breed standard. I'm done.
