I went upstairs and dug a book off the shelf that I bought some years back at a Goodwill. I never needed it for Duke, he was a thick skulled American Bulldog, but in spite of that he caught on quickly. The book is “Training you to train your dog” by Blanche Saunders (1946, reprinted 1965). She was a pioneer in dog training to the point that she was one of the authors for the guidelines and grading of canine behavior for the American Kennel Club and provided the grading system. Leo started barking incessantly, because he was demanding to be played with even after he was shown affection, and petting. I turned to the chapter titled “Breaking the habit of barking”, and followed the instructions. Wrap your fingers around the snout and say No! In a forceful manner. After doing this twice, Leo became a lamb. Barking can be annoying. My Aussie does that in the middle of the night. She is trying to tell me something is outside in the dark and wakes me every night. Unless it is Raylan Givens come to serve an arrest warrant, I am not concerned about what it is. I appreciate her telling me about it. In some circumstances, I am a fan of owning a barking dog. I never needed a “no solicitors” sign with Duke. His huge chest allowed him to deliver a hellish bark, the doorbell never rang twice.😉

Thank you gents! I agree about the big bark ... Henry can look at them through the upper glass window without even hopping up. Lol

Leo looks docile in this picture, but he is "Hell On Wheels" when we try to watch TV. Jumping up on our recliners trying to bring the hindquarters up. He is pretty insistent, but it is over the top. Got a vibrating/ audible/ shock collar coming tomorrow, won't be using the shock feature in my experience the vibration and tones of the collar do the trick. He ain't no Cujo.

Yep Charlie the vibration mostly does the trick, down the road anything in your hand that resembles the shocker will stop them.

In general you do NOT want the dog to associate the vibe/shock with YOU, but with what THEY did. If they associate it with you then when you are not around they will do what they want. Like digging. Use the controller when they cannot see you and they will assiciate the unpleasantness with the digging. If they associate it with you they will continue to dig when you are not around.

Leo is a nice looking pup. He looks smart too, once he learns his place in the family, he going to be fine. I bet he's overjoyed to have a new home.

I got a call from the wife last night, as the A/C conked out. Seems Leo decided to chew through the wires! Our A/C guy fixed it, fencing off the side yard on Saturday. But it confirms his need to be a crate dog when dad and mom are not home, and at bedtime.
Our dual love seat recliner and couch were pricey, if I came home and he shredded them I would be upset to say the least.

I think that in time he will be OK, the vibrating collar has been very effective in qualming his hyperactivity. Stringing up 16’ of mesh fence tomorrow, not in a hurry to see a repeat of this nonsense.

With loving firmness and consistency most Problem Children come around. Patience is the key. I bet you win this one. Good luck!

I forgot the kind of damage a big dog can do. Years ago we had a loveable mixture of hound and shepherd that loved to dig. She tried to turn my backyard into a copy of the moon's surface before we found her a home on a large farm with lots of kids.

My remedy for digging is to put their own poop in the hole and cover it up. They usually come back to the same hole, for a while at least. GSPs get the idea right away.

I don’t know how he learned this — I certainly didn’t teach him — but this how Eli reacts when he hears the word “rabbit.” When he hears “squirrel” he scans the ground and then the trees. “Rabbit” is strictly a ground search.

I think that this critter is wise beyond his years, and he is informed by his lineage tendencies, and has a pretty good custodian at hand.
All that adds up to having a good hand on the payroll.

Thanks, Charlie— but he’s his own guy. And I think he thinks HE’s the custodian of ME.
