His coloration makes him look like a Rottie. The blue eyes kinda give away the game, though.

All puppies have blue eyes until 7-8 weeks.

Catahoulas often keep them, though, don't they?

Having adopted Leo as a rescue dog, he is a pain in the butt… we are going to keep him. But… if we had a house with cats, young children, it would be a better fit for a family to get a puppy.
With a rescue dog, you do not know what he has been through, Leo crow hops like a wild horse every morning when we let him out of the crate… and based on his actions, if we did not put him in the crate, God only knows what damage he would do to the furniture, he loves to destroy things. We can keep a handle on it at home, but unsupervised he would be a force to be reckoned with. Fortunately, he is good in a crate… he did destroy the plastic base that came with the crate, so we had to buy a metal one… $100!
With small kids or cats, a puppy would learn better I think, and through acclimation would be better growing up with other household critters be they two legged or four legged.
We started with just using the vibrate feature on the training collar, but we had to go to the shock feature that we incrementally adjusted to get his attention. The wife has bad hips and legs and a pouncing uncontrollable dog could lead to huge problems for her.
As I said, we are going to stick it out with him, but he is pretty mule headed.

Good on you and the missus, Charlie. A dog can be a lot to take on. Kudos to y'all for giving Leo a forever home despite his . . . colorful foibles.

Over the years I have found two “discipline inducers” that help to internalize your control of a dog. Admittedly they work best on a puppy, but who knows what effect they MIGHT have on an older dog. (1) They do not eat until you release them. He sits as you put the bowl down and does not move until you say “OK” or whatever your release word is. (2) They do not go out a door (house or vehicle) until released. Same deal, altho the “sit” is not necessary. I don’t know if this would work with Leo, but might be worth a try.

Some dogs need that discipline and I, too, have seen those techniques work well with the Rhodesian Ridgeback that lived here for 18 months. My Aussie Shep girl is too civilized for that, fortunately.

Catahoulas need a stern owner, not mean but stern, they attach themselves to one person, Buddy was my wife’s pick.

Ki my first Catahoula breeder was going to put him down, white Catahoulas are prone to a lot of health issues, wife said well take him. He stuck to me outside, one day a truck with 2 young men on my cane loading patch was throwing trash, junk out of a pickup, approached them unfortunately without my hog leg and asked them what’s going on, one said we are throwing junk out, they were from a neighboring town, told them this isn’t the trash pile put everything back in your truck, one young man was approaching me in a menacing way, Ki hackles went up and a growl I’d never heard came up, young man backed up, seeing that Catahoula deep throated growls they started loading the trash back in the truck, went back to house, told wife Ki saved me from an arse whipping, he died of cancer 14 yrs after, that’s my Avatar now, I still miss him!

I love dogs. They may be irritating, destructive, and expensive to keep, but they are the best friend you will ever have and a bottomless well of unconditional love. They don't think twice about risking their life for you. I love my little dog we have and I miss my collie and Weimaraner. And my poodle who understood everything we said and could speak a dozen words. I love dogs.

I have zero use for anyone that is cruel to animals. I wouldn’t let that type within six feet of me, my family, friends or property. I will watch them like a hawk until they are far away.

Eli knows “Squirrel!” and “Check for squirrels!” He goes right to the big dinette window and scopes things out. Loves to chase them, but so far hasn’t caught one. Emma caught one once and it bit her. Thereafter she made sure everything she caught was dead, dead, dead and became very hard on pheasants, dead or alive. I had to get to a retrieved bird really fast or it would be pre-tenderized.

The local news reported tonight that the independent rescue organizations are pretty much in dire straits. With the bad economy, soaring inflation and record number of pet surrenders, they don’t know how they are going to survive.
On the municipal level, on any given day the Maricopa county shelters have 500 animals or more, and that is with free adoptions spay/ neuter/ vaccines.
Tough times for our homeless 4 legged buddies.

My Aussie girl knows "Where's the deer?" She immediately goes to the window to check. When outdoors she goes on a kind of Point with nose and ears working.
