This will be a tough day. Jack has reached “that point.” The vet is coming out later to do the deed.

Adding condolences Bob. Late wife & I had to put down a few "free to good home" older animals (Irish Setters) over the years

Saw a lot of water go under the bridge. And raised Eli together. I’m sure that barely scratches the surface. Peace to you, my friend.

Guys, thank you so much for your support and understanding. It means a lot to me. It’s done. He crossed the bridge in complete peace. I’d cheerfully give an arm and a leg to know he will be waiting for me when I cross it.14 years was not enough.

What a handsome lad! I especially like the chest high grass; Action Jackson was in his element! Last I heard pre-covid, the life expectancy of an American Male is 77 years. Make me a king for a day, I would decree that dogs are a match...sucks that they leave us so soon.

At the vet this morning we were put on hold by a couple of emergencies. Two family dogs just moved to a new house and got territorial. Yellow Lab and a pit bull. Both tore up with bones showing on 3 of his legs. I didn't see the pit as he was covered on the stretcher. Vet said it was going to be at least $10k to fix them, with no guarantee.

Yikes on all counts. Yep. Pretty hard to take. We have a lot of dog attacks around here because stray pits roam all over and attack the dogs they run across. The city tried to ban them about 10 years ago, but the people were against it. It's good that they aren't afraid of the 18 wheelers on the highway or we would be over our heads with them. They are not welcome around my house.

As much as I love dogs it is not in me to spend $10k. Regular vet visits and good food.

Sorry I haven't been here for you Bob, this is the hardest time for us as dog lovers, but I think your arm and leg are safe...when The Lord made you a dog person, and sent Jack to you, your sprits were blended; you'll see him again. We pay for that blessing with the emptiness we carry when they pass.
Chin up, Bob, and God bless.

This dog was watching a vendor selling meat on a stick, at the end of the day he approached the vendor apparently seeing people giving something green to get meat on a stick. Vendor gave him meat and dodggie did not ask for his change.

I just met the 7 month old black Lab from 2 houses down. She's Molly and she's a spitfire. I've heard her out in the empty field behind my back fence many times, woofin' at this and that. I managed to get her attention this time and decided to open the gate and say hi. It took her a minute (and her human mom coming out with her), but she eventually warmed up to me and let me pet her a good bit, in between charging at full tilt around in circles. Gave me a little kiss after eating a wild onion, which was mighty thoughtful of her.

I took this picture of Oscar, a Springer Spaniel, in Donegal when I was visiting a friend who lives in Belfast. My buddy is a Salmon fisherman, and rents a cottage for a couple weeks in summer to fish in the streams of Donegal where the salmon run. Oscar is the gamekeeper’s dog (Jarleth by name). Oscar was attuned to every stop Jarleth made in his old Defender, and was as comfortable as an otter in the streams of Donegal. I made the “mistake” of playing fetch with him back at the lodge and he never gave me a moment of peace after that. your post Urb reminded me of the dogs we forge a bond to, but might not be the owner. I miss old Oscar, hopefully I’ll see him again.
