Tried some tobacco from the "scraps jar" which is that which was left over from the filling tray. Most of it was from the 2013-2015 era...so was hard to tell what might be in it...whatever it was...it was aged, that is for sure...was it good? Hard to tell...most of it was OK, but the problem with a scraps jar tobacco is that it will never be the same way for the second bowlful. So, what have I really got? No way of knowing...just know that if I ever werew to run out of blends (not likely) I will have that jar of stuff that is definitely tobacco, but good...meh.

Best Brown Flake in an Alberto Bonfiglioli. Sitting in the sun with a light north breeze and temp in the mid 70s. Pleasant afternoon....

C&D Bijou in the Savinelli Estella. I wasn't sure what to expect with this one, as I haven't really smoked any Virginia forward blends this time around. Nice broken flake, tin note more bread than grass, with honey and spice in the back. Sweetness and spiciness come and go, the nice bready notes are more consistent. I'm enjoying this first bowl and will probably have a couple of more before jarring this for warmer weather. I'm glad I got another tin to leave sealed, and I'll be getting more to cellar long term. Might have to pick up a couple tins.

Irish Whisky in the Peterson Walnut Spigot 150. The little bastard has excess stain, I hope it will stop over the next few pipefuls. It happened with one of my Standard System and I ended up returning it. Nothing I dislike more than breaking in a new pipe for nothing. Wipe some honey in the bowl and it will quickly build a carbon layer over the stain. Petersons take 25 to 50 bowls to get broken in generally.

I’ve had that happen a couple times but within a few days and smokes, they were done bleeding. The first time that I had it happen to was a new Sara Eltang that I bought from Smoking Pipes at the Chicago Show. When I noticed what was happening, I sought out Tom Eltang, showed him my stained fingertips, and asked him about it. He said that the pipe had probably been made last week and he uses a water based stain that sometimes there is excess in the pores. Have you tried applying a coat of wax to see if that helps?

Just finished an after dinner pipe of #10 Downing Street circa Dec 2019 out of my newest pipe, the Pot. I must say two smokes into this one and it is becoming my favorite in my line up!

Really deep, rich red Virginia, a smidge of bright, and a whisper of perique. A bready Va/Per that focuses on the red VA. Delicious. I'm going to get to smoking some C&D 2016 Carolina Red Flake sometime soon for some comparison. One tip I'll give on the Carolina Red Flake w/ or without Perique is to feed it to a good Virginia pipe. If you smoke it in a pipe that's been smoking burley, it will wipe out all nuance and mask the delicacy of it.
I recently opened a tin of Sutliff VA Perique and that stuff is really good as well, and has an addition of black cavendish in the fat crumble flakes. That one is a bit sweeter but it's great.
