It's usually bad news when the Operations Manager calls. Not today. He thanked me for "doing the tedious detail work that no one else can ever get right, and taking care of all of our problem customers." He said he called the office this morning and got me another raise. No complaints here.
Today is a good day

Congratulations Josh, I'm sure you deserve it. Well, where I'm from, they take advantage of everything you can do, they do less, then put more money in their own pockets. It's kinda strange getting recognition for once. It's even better getting a raise without asking for it, or begging for a year.

The Pacific Theater was WAY more brutal than the European. On all sides.

That's especially true in the current labor market.

Worked with an older man at Exxon he was a compressor man, Mr Whitehead , used to go give him a hand , one day we ate our lunch and I could not believe how he was enjoying his sandwich, you like it a lot I said, he said I was on the Batam Death March and all food is great. You never know. We became good friends but he never mentioned it again, had to read about it.

Saw a brick and mortar auction that had two 4 oz tins of Rattray’s (1960)and two tins of Balkan Saseini that looks old.
“We broke the seals to check the contents, moisture looks great”
Insert Homer Simpson head slap .

The Japanese were extremely cruel, skinning people alive, and the emperor worship was off the charts with cult like worship. The rape of Nanking was pretty atrocious.
Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire. The military members had to do what they had to do.
Having said that, Robert McNamara and his “Whiz Kid” buddies were POS’s that should have been punished for their stupidity with Vietnam.

It is still hard on the people who have to carry out the orders. What Japanese soldiers did to civilians and POWs is not a good reason to torch women, children and old people who have nothing to do with the war. Sadly. WWII was a war on civilians in Europe and Asia.

I guess we will have to disagree then John.
In my opinion, if you aren’t willing to go toe to toe with the psychopathic rulers, and wage war without the intent of scrubbing the aggressor nation from the planet, engaging in war is pointless.
I am just tired of sending our troops into meatgrinders with their hands tied behind their backs resulting in us not winning wars since WWII.
Sorry, my son lost buddies in Kandahar because they were not allowed to shoot into “holy places” while my son received fire from them, watching his buddies die. You either enter wars to win it, and scare the hell out of your enemies or you just stay out of it.
I would not encourage any young person into joining the military until the collective political and military industrial complex that Eisenhower warned us about, got their head out of their a$$e$.
Emphasis on “$”…. The politicians and the arms merchants are in the bed together… but then again, Eisenhower was a prophet that warned us.

None of the above has to do with firebombing civilians in Tokyo or Dresden.

If you become the thing you're fighting against, it's already won. America's enemies know this well. And they know it's the only way they can win. So they keep trying to sucker us into doing their work for them: turning us into them.

It has everything to do with it… 9/11.
But I spoke my piece, so I will move on.

War is the blight of homo sapiens. My solution is that when heads-of-state want war they should go into a darkened room together, with knives, and sort it out. Trouble is young men like war, or at least the idea of it— before they actually experience it. “No, grandfather. You stay in the warm teepee and we will kill the evil ones!”

My uncle, Howard, fire bombed Tokyo. He never got over it. Dropping Napalm on all those civilians. They would have done it to us if they could. The whole world went insane. The Japanese did try. They floated balloons with incendiaries down wind across the Pacific to start forest fires in Washington and Oregon. Not quite the same thing as burning up Tokyo but who knows what they might have done had they the resources. They did shell the coast of California from a submarine once or twice.
