Trying to warm house after a cold night. Stove blazing in living room. AH, Winter! Bring back fond memories for me, sorry you're getting cold though. I had the privilege to live on an 8 acre farm in southern Oregon for 6 years of my childhood. Our only heat in the home was a wood stove in the front room of the ranch style home. My bedroom was near the back of the house, only one room was farther from the stove. I'd wake on the winter mornings shivering under my grandma made quilt and other blankets. If I was first up, it would be my task to go out and get the wood we needed (Us boys were never industrious enough to do it the night before.) and light the stove. BUT! I was a young lad of 10 to 15 (Ok so only 5 years) and quite healthy then so it was not too bad. Anyhow John, stay warm and thank you for bringing back the memories!

I used to visit my share cropper uncle in a house that only had a wood burning cooking stove. But my bed was a feather bed in the kitchen. Nice place to sleep until 5am when my aunt started cooking.

Bedroom is unheated at the other end of the house. Plus, cat door is open to the outside. I bring wood in at night and feed the stove if I am up. Problem is I do not get up during the night the way I used to. So, cold mornings! My "office" where computer is located is also not heated. Cold in here. So, keeps me a the minimum of time!

We lived in a farm house in Kansas where you back the truck up to the swing doors to the basement and dump the coal, we had a coal furnace that was huge.
A house in Wichita where to light the furnace by a straightened coat hanger and lit toilet paper, turn the valve on after the hanger went down to the grate. The paper went out on my brother once, pulled the hanger up and forgot to shut the valve off… on the next try, a huge fireball came up to the ceiling and my brother lost his eyebrows and had cute curls across the top of the head.
We lived in another Cibolo Texas “farm house” that had been converted from a barn, no insulation, cannot remember what heat source probably electric that did not cut it. Every night multiple mousetraps were activated, followed by occasional squeals. A half mile hike to the county road to catch the bus.
I preferred the homes in Kansas, one for the heat factor, one for the entertainment value.

I lived in a cave for a few years as a child. The only heat was a fire in the larger part of the cave. No wood so we had to use buffalo chips. Sometimes a bear would wander in on a cold winter night and I would get to snuggle up to him. No dice with mountain lions as they were always grumpy. Snow would seal the cave, sometimes until spring.

Hot, long lasting an fairly clean. My wood stove is not rated for coal so A few large lumps on top of the wood.

I have not burned it since the mine closed. I am aware of the emissions from burning anything. My stove is small.

It’s not the emissions. It’s the NUMBER of people making them.

I went to my cousins house in the middle of Kansas, early 90’s. He had a huge metal fab shop that was toasty warm in February, the reason being is that he bought a bunch of railroad ties that he got for next to nothing. He had rollers outside and used a gantry crane with ice hooks to drop the tie on the rollers, lift the weight assist door and shove it into the sealed furnace. The smoke from the stack was impressive…. iI asked him about the EPA’s view.
“EP what? Was his response.
“Never mind!”
As for burning creosote logs, it must create a challenge on not turning the chimney into a jet engine, but I guess he figured it out.

I think that I can speak for all, when I say that it was a blessing for you to share your story. Heartbreaking initially, hope, cautiously optimistic, and triumph. Charlie, I'm truly touched by this, thank you. Ill say that I’ve waited too long to become that daddy that she deserves. I could've done better but she is still my baby girl and i love her a whole lot.

Says everyone that ever has been a father. Life is a learning curve, and an evolution in knowledge.
You have done well, Hoss.
Still, a briar patch hug is in order or Justin will unleash the goon squad.

Gone most of my oldest childhood and only made a change when I could no longer function. My youngest will be six this December and had only really had me home since almost a year ago. I am better now than I was. I am so very lucky for having friends from this forum to help me and support the change that should have happened years ago. I was like the frog that they slowly turned the heat up on and he sat there untill he was cooked to death. I was way to close to being cooked. Also had much support from my wife.

So Friday I hope the news that tomorrow is my last day at this assignment. It was suppressed to be two or three months so I'm kinda odd being fired.
No worries though, I work in a full time consulting program for a major staffing agency. I will be paid to sit and wait for my next gig to be assigned.
I was told not to worry about this reflecting on me because it's already told my boss at the agency things aren't working. They take the days to respond to a request for more tasks. No direction and is chaos at the office at this assignment.
I still take it personally, I mean they are doing me a favor and yet it's annoying they say I'm not working out while they won't give me anything to do.
Good news is since my last two assignments wanted to hire me but could not afford to buy my contract the agency knows I do good work.

Day 1 of saying "F making money for someone else." My friend sends me these every morning before I wake up. She just beat breast cancer last year and 2 weeks ago found out she has Leukemia. When you're struggling yourself, but still inspire and encourage others, you're a different type of warrior. (We met years ago through a support group)

In my experience staffing agencies are the most screwed up companies in the world. Robert Half is the worst. The people who manage there are those that are unable to get a real job. Don't let their malfunction bring you down.

Don't let their malfunction bring you down. Actually, it's the company I was placed at, not Robert Half. RH has kept me on and is looking for another location now. Meanwhile, because of the program I am with, I get paid to sit and wait (or do professional ed courses)

70s and humid today. Our concrete porch has had condensation on it all day, making it slippery as heck. The color in our yard is amazing this year. The sycamore looks like a torch in the light of the setting sun.

The sycamore looks like a torch in the light of the setting sun. Other than the humidity it sounds nice! Though, if you have a way to make it happen I'd paint that porch with some good marine-grade nonskid before someone falls and gets hurt. It was mid 70's here and nice.

It was pretty nice as I wasn't working outside. We haven't decided what to do with the porch yet. Maybe tile, maybe a wood overlay.
