We got rained out that turned into snow a couple weeks ago. The young guy on the crew went and got a big paying winter job down in San Diego. So I drive the work truck now and then Boss tells me just take it home so I don't have to drive over and pick it up in the morning. 2010 2500 crew cab long bed of course 4wd Cummins but what I really like is it is a manual with low geared rear end great work truck for the mountains.

That does make a difference.

Actually I have been able to get a lot done with the new manager on-site to benefit the crews that before as a satellite operation was a pain in the butt. I pretty much streamlined and put into place a lot of things that make life easier. I will miss my free time surfing the net on the boss’s dime though.

The Diet of Worms is COMPLETELY different than it sounds.
I didn't realize that September 11 was exactly 318 years after the Charge of the Winged Hussars against the Ottomans in relief of Vienna.

The Deluge! For a while now, and particularly the last coupla days, my email inbox has seen an avalanche of “deals” fill it up. Every morning I have to dump 30 or so mails I don’t need and don’t want. Goes with the “digital territory” I reckon. I look forward to it being over.

That historical fact somehow escaped me, as well. Those bothersome Turks! For those who do not remember: At around 6:00 pm the Polish king ordered the cavalry attack in four groups, three Polish and one from the Holy Roman Empire—18,000 horsemen charged down the hills, the largest cavalry charge in history. Sobieski led the charge at the head of 3,000 Polish heavy lancers, the famed "Winged Hussars".They actually wore wings to terrify the Ottomans. Angels coming to kill them.

Snow. Forecast 6” overnight and another 6” today. But… we have about 1/2” on the ground, nothing falling, and radar shows it’s gone by noon. Once again the boffins got it wrong (hooray!) as they do about 3/4s of the time for this little pocket of the outback.

It amazes me how many emails people in offices have to deal with, when I worked in hazmat, my supervisor said that he averaged 150 emails to deal with when he got into the office. That sucks pretty bad, and he was letting us know what challenges he faced while working from home. He didn’t get much sympathy from us though, it was in the middle of the pandemic, us technicians were on the road all of the time dealing with an enormous amount of work, in the middle of the pandemic. I imagine that a lot of emails are generated needlessly though.

Temperatures cold here (but not below freezing) and rain expected starting Thursday for about four or five days. Just reading a few good books. Going to take a look at the Napoleonic Wars, I think. 3 million soldiers died in those wars, perhaps half as many again civilians. Compared to World War 2, more than ten times those numbers. Perhaps 50 million in total. Hard to imagine numbers that large. Lots of crazy cavalry charges, though.

I imagine that a lot of emails are generated needlessly though. I quit keeping track after it got over 200 emails a day. A lot were automated information from the server software and such. A lot could be cleared in a couple of seconds. Usually a couple of dozen took a few minutes and a couple more were really needing attention. The last 6 months I worked it was all email all day.

And CHEAP!!
My first PC had a 3 gb hard drive and cost my parents $3500. That 16 mb of RAM was killer too.
A TB on a small little card is just crazy. Imagine what that chip from the COVID shot has in it!! 😂😂😂

I don't have any devices that would handle it. I put a 256gb card in my camera and it recognized it, though it's only rated for 64gb. A terabyte is a LOT of data.

My first computer I bought from a guy running a computer store in Hollister Ca. It was patched together with surplus parts, an old Apple monitor, and all kinds of adaptive devices to make it function, a frankenputer my brother called it when he dropped by. It was loaded up with all the goods! freeware that had no use. I think the windows program was pirated, and a virus magnet. $1,500.00!
I had no business buying a computer at that time.

My first computer was a Timex-Sinclair ZX81 with a 16K RAM module and thermal printer. Later added an (almost) full size keyboard. A TV was your screen. Stored programs on a cassette tape/recorder! $100 new in 1981 or 1982. For scale: It's about 8 or 9 inches wide. Thermal paper was 4 or 5 inches wide. (Stock photos) Later bought a Timex 2086. Then an Apple IIc. (Swore off Apple forever after that.) Then an IBM PS/2 series desktop. Then various Gateway and Dell desktops. Somewhere in there was a Radio Shack laptop. Then various Hewlet Packard desktops and laptops. Now an ASUS laptop.

I tested Windows versions 1 and 2 on it.
